A place where you can find goat carcasses lined along the windows - advertising freshly made cabrito. A place where you are toasted as you enter (even after getting your temperature checked - since this is written during COVID-19 times..). A place that is truly - authentically "Monterrey." This place is a local boast for good reason - just be sure to know there are a variety of ways they serve what you probably came here looking for ... read more to see what I mean. It provides all the quintessential plates of the Nuevo Leon area! Now, let's get to the meat of it... ;) Tequila | The tequila you are treated with upon entry (hence, the reason I begin with it) is delicious! Very smooth, very strong, and very traditional! It's a great way to start an authentically Mexican meal. If you're visiting, I recommend trying out the traditional tequila that they have on their menu that comes with limon juice & a bloody mary! The coordinate the colors with a shot of tequila (all in separate shot glasses) to resemble the Mexican flag! 8/10 Guacamole & Salsa | Chips come with the table - and so does a delicious serving of salsa! BUT I'd recommend getting a healthy serving of Guacamole as well! Pierna del Cabrito (Leg of the Goat w/ fixings for a Taco) | When you order a specific portion of the goat (because - that's what you came here for, right?!), they let you know that different portions of the goat will have different levels of fat and amounts of meat. I went with the leg (pierna) because it had a higher portion of lean meat. It came out on a fajita platter with different fajita-esque fixings (chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, salsa, etc.) along with some tortillas. I spent some time cutting up the meat and making some personalized cabrito tacos - delicious! One thing to know about cabrito is that it tends to be (or at least in this instance) on the drier side if you get it pretty lean. You may want to prepare it well into a taco to avoid a pretty bland bite. 5.8/10 My girlfriend had a bit of a cabrito smothered in their house salsa / sauce. I believe hers had a bit more fat to it. Forgot the name, but guessing it could be or close to the cabrito en salsa. 7/10 The atmosphere of this place is a ton of fun! It has a very authentic vibe and some traditional decor that add to the experience. As mentioned, the goat was a bit drier for me - and I'm unsure if it was due to the ice or the cabrito, but my stomach did have some strange pain shortly after leaving. My girlfriend was fine - and she typically has a more sensitive stomach! All in all, a great visit for foreigners (and locals!). One time was enough, but we enjoyed the experience! I'd give this place 3.5 / 5 if I could!.. but the Stomach pain and lack of flavor in the leaner meat slightly brought down the score for me.

The Monterrey style lamb is fantastic.

The Rey del Cabrito has a fame to be one of the real Monterrey style lamb places - and after our visit I only can confirm the reputation is well earned. The row of lambs hanging in the close proximity of a huge wooden grill visible at the entrance is a sign of authentic local delicatesses. I selected an individual portion of lamb shoulder which was just perfect. The thin, most crispy skin hides perfectly prepared meat which is tender, flavorful and a pure enjoyment. The plate is certainly enough for one, especially with apetizers. Three kind of salsas and hand made corn tortillas are on the house. We also had It is clear that the decades of experience of the restaurant -- 70 plus, from which the restaurant has operated under its current name -- has left favorable fingerprints.

The cabrito was very tender and delicious. Melt in your mouth. Definitely will need to come back here on a return trip. We had 15 people and there was plenty of food. We ordered the goat and a mixture of beef. The tortillas were delicious, hot and plentiful! Many different salsas to choose from, my favorite was super spicy. Everything was delicious. The atmosphere is perfect with a spot to watch them roast the goat meat. Beautiful tile work and classy chandeliers.

Very good place for authentic Mexicano in Monterrey! The sauces with the chips is amazing and the food is fresh and margaritas are good!

Life is always good when you cook al pastor. Cooking cabrito over an open pit nice and slow with leña & smoke is where it's at. The must have dish is el costillar "ribs". El costillar has all the mouth watering taste of the perfect meat and buttery fat. Another favorite dish is la paleta "shoulder" . If you want to eat cabrito right! This is the perfect spot.

Visiting Monterrey for the holidays and many locals recommended us going to El Rey del Cabrito. As a must stop, we crunched the restaurant in during lunch time. Our server Manuel was very attentive and cordial. He got our drinks and guacamole out pretty fast. We ordered the famous cabrito, agujas de rib eye, and alambres. The cabrito was definitely delicious, but surprisingly enough, the "agujas de rib eye" was very exquisite. The meat was cooked just right, and with some guacamole and homemade corn tortillas, it was the perfect combination. We didn't have enough room for dessert, as we were all full and satisfied. Parking was accessible and the ambience was definitely interesting, as you can see the cabritos cooking from the window.

This place was recommended by locals and it wasn't as good as we were expecting. Meet was dry and chewy and they seemed short staffed so the service wasn't the best.

A must go. Food was exceptionally flavorful. Service was swift and efficient. Shared an appetizer. Beans were excellent. Shared the Cabrito and beef both were tender and flavorful. Atmosphere was open and we enjoyed it all around will be back when visiting Monterrey.

Couple of my US friends, who grew up in Monterrey, have been bragging about the city's famous Cabrito (baby goat or kid) for a while now. I figured it's a must try now that I am here. Only hurdle, I am here on a business by myself, without any Spanish speaking friends. From the airport I took an Uber with driver Juan who spoke no English so I turned to Google translator voice recognition App to chat with him. Being a sincere food lover, very quickly my food priority topped the list, almost as if that's the reason I was visiting Monterrey :) Half way to the Hotel, I brought up Cabrito conversation with Juan using my translator. As Luck would have it, we were just minutes away from one of the most famous Cabrito restaurants in town "El Rey Del Cabrito", right before arriving the Hotel. I told Juan to get off the highway and head to the restaurant to pickup my long awaited dinner. Minutes later I found myself walking thru the decorated entrance, welcomed by taxidermied mountain goat, bear and deer. After going through a pair of Ivory (not sure if those are real), we reached the counter for my to-go order. With no Spanish skills, I turned to Juan to help me with the order and what I understood, he ordered an authentic Cabrito that the restaurant was famous for. It's roasted in traditional way without any seasoning. 300 Peso (~$16 USD) for one order. As soon as I signed my CC receipt, the order was ready, surprisingly fast, as if they knew I couldn't wait to try it :) When I say traditional, I mean traditional. The baby goat is split from the middle and slow roasted with no additional flavor. The meat was tender and the flavor was.....of course very meaty, Umami to the core. It came with a lot of tortilla, tomato, lettuce, onion, tortilla chips, 3 types is Salsa and an unidentified soup. I try almost any food, except the unidentified one, so I skipped the soup when I opened the bag in my hotel room. Loved all 3 salsas with the chips. As far as the meat, if you are a meat lover like me, you will enjoy it. Otherwise, you may wanna try a little less traditional one somewhere else where they add some flavors while roasting, some flavoring maybe from braising the animal with its own blood. So, you may wanna find out where the flavor is coming from before you order. You can make fajita with the meat or just eat by itself with the sauces, either way, it's great. The portion of the whole meal was huge for one person. I would love to go back to this restaurant another time to dine in, as the ambience was just great with the deco and the taxidermied animals. But, I'll definitely bring someone with me who speaks Spanish to explore the menu and ensure an authentic hearty experience. #Airwolf #repeatrestaurant

Cabrito (baby goats) in this line become clean and roasted as seen from El Rey del Cabrito's front windows!
    Purnajyoti B.

El Rey del Cabrito becomes a quintessential stop for authentic cabrito! Cabrito can come in three popular cuts from a baby goat's body. Mexicans suggest cabrito palette (or shoulder portion) because the meat has flavor and remains moist. $50 USD there can feed a family of 4 with an appetizer, dessert, and drinks as well.

Decent food for the price. The cabrito is very gamey though, much more than other restaurants.

I'm a fan because my wife likes cabrito. I enjoyed their other entrees and botanas. When it comes to cabrito, this is the place to visit.

Upon making our reservation we were not informed there would be a time limit for our dinner. Nevertheless, upon arrival we were told we only had 2 hours at our table since they would use it. And sure enough two hours later we were asked to leave even though we were still ordering drinks. It was not as if we were just loitering without paying. Really rude in our opinion. Then there was the food. If I had to describe it in one word it would be: uneventful. We tried the chicharron de rib-eye and another steak as well as three sides. The quality of the meat was lacking and not well cooked. The sides were bland. It might be the fact that I had such high expectations that I found this place a disappointment. Drinks were nothing out of the ordinary. In general, overpriced for what it is. Apparently the place doubles as a night club.Perhaps if you only go for drinks or at times where there's music it might be different. But if you are looking for exceptional food, it's best to stick with La Nacional. If you want to splurge best to do it in style and with great quality.
