This place hits the spot for good Mexican food. We each had the cheese enchilada plate, which is more than enough to fill you up. The cheese enchiladas were delicious - and the homemade red sauce was flavorful without having an overpowering chile flavor, which can happen. Oh, and if you like cheese, these enchiladas bring it. The rice and beans were also tasty and homemade - it was like eating at my grandmother's house minus the drama. All in all - not a bad spot. The prices were a little high, which was surprising considerably the town, but the service was great. read more

There are 2 El Patio in Presidio, one is Restaurant the other Cafe, only a few blocks from each other. I am not sure if they are own by the same people and if this is the page for the Cafe, the one we eat at. After a day of light hiking and lots of yoga we decided to try a different place in El Presidio. I ordered the carne asada. Meat was tender and in a red sauce, which surprised me - carne asada for me, as an Argentinian, is plain grill meat, no sauces. My husband had the chicharrones burritos, his comment: "hmm, very authentic, different texture" The service was good, I chatted in Spanish with the woman who was running the place. read more

*** TERRIBLE SERVICE *** The service staff today was very slow and rude. The asado had a hair in it and when we told the waitress she could not have cared less. She asked if I wanted a new plate after I'd already waited an hour for the hairy one. It was a no-win situation. One of our party didn't get his plate until we'd all finished eating. Our table was not offered chips and salsa like other tables. One of our party never got a coffee refill. If you pay $2.50 for soda, you get one 12 oz can. No ice cup. The bathroom did not have hand soap which made me wonder how the cook and waitresses washed their hands to handle our food. When I told them about the lack of soap, they all just looked at each and never said a word to me. Oh well, not their problem, I guess :/ The four waitresses huddled at the cash register were too busy preening to bother with doing their actual job. The asado was disappointingly tough and definitely not worth the steep $14.50 price tag. On the bright side, the portions were so meager that we didn't have to suffer through too much of it. To put a nice little cap on this shit show, they only accept cash and our bill was $120 so instead of one person paying for the group as planned, we had to scramble to come up with enough cash to cover the bill. No Apple Pay, no debit or credit cards. Cash only. They should really warn customers as they come in because there's no ATM nearby. Our party of six left there hungry and shocked at the lack of service. You've been warned! read more

Boo hitched hike through this area about 25 years ago and remembered this place, he was excited to see it still in business and when we stopped I could see why. Clean, service is friendly and the food was just delish!! Food is bursting with flavor and the tortillas were fresh...I ate so much my sides seem to split! Well worth the stop. Also worth the wait for your food!! Seat yourself, they'll find you. Everything is prepared plate by plate. Nothing fast food about this place. Our order came out around 40 minutes after we ordered. The Chile con Queso appetizer came out about 20 minutes after we ordered. Again, WELL WORTH THE WAIT. The Tacos de Alambre were outstandingly tasty. I almost didn't order them but so grateful I did. My fellow diners had the El Patio Special, Beef Enchiladas, and the Chicken Fajita Quesadilla. So there's no patio. So? I think that's kind of amusing. This is a nice, clean, well-run restaurant. The service was excellent. Our server looked out for my friend's food allergy - my friend nearly ate something he shouldn't, but the server caught it and brought him something else. I had the tortilla soup and the chile con queso and loved every single bite of each. The tortilla soup was unique and utterly delicious - the best I've ever had. Big chunks of veggies and tender chicken in a stock that I could have drank by the half gallon. This was no can of tortilla soup. This was rustic homemade goodness. Their tortilla soup would be my go-to food whenever I have a cold. Hands down! The chile con queso was also delicious. Light and rich with lots of diced chile and just the right amount of heat. We were staying up at the Lajitas Golf Resort, the concierge suggested a trip to see Presidio and to have lunch at El Patio Cafe. We are certainly pleased that we went here, it was very good. I had the El Patio Special plate, my wife had the Chili Con Queso and they were just so tasty. Warning tho..no margaritas!!!!, but the Carta Blanca beer was a good substitute. I too must note the ironic fact that this place does not have a patio. Arriving via the end of our big bend trip and following yelpers recommendations we stopped for a late lunch. I got the el patio plate which included 2 enchiladas, a beef taco and a chile rellano. The hard taco was nice and crispy and the chile was awesome. Hubby got steak and chicken fajitas and they had great flavor. You get chips and salsa when you arrive and it was the spiciest standard salsa I've ever experienced. A little Mexican cafe on the U.S. Mexican border. It is not Texmex. The beans are tasty, a little smooth for my druthers as I hand mash mine and I like the courser grind, so to speak. The taste overcomes that objection. I always order the Huevos Rancheros. The excellent salsa they put on the eggs is different than the excellent salsa they give you for your chips. I don't get to Presidio very often but when I do, I head to El Patio. I always walk away stuffed and with a smile on my face. PS They only have corn tortillas, in my opinion, the only way to fly. We are are full-time RVers and came to the area to tour Big Bend National Park and on a lark decided to take the 50 mile drive to Presidio, Texas, just for grins and giggles. It was late morning when we arrived in Presidio and figured we had better grab a bite while we can. We started looking for a place to eat that wasn't fast food... Choices were limited. Presidio is a fairly old town that has seen better times. We happened upon the El Patio Restaurant on the main street, only about a mile or two from the Mexican border. The building is a bit run down, so there was a little trepidation going in... We opened the door to find the place absolutely filled to capacity with the after-church crowd. Nothing fancy - but this place was hopping with the townsfolk and the food on their tables looked mighty inviting. The meet, greet, and seat took awhile, and was a bit rushed... A table was hurriedly bussed for us, we got seated, and were immediately brought menus. It was very apparent this was a "mom and pop" restaurant, and everybody was multi-tasking to the max. The owner finally broke free long enough to take our order and bring us fresh chips with homemade salsa - apologizing profusely for the delay. No problem... The place was slammed... We were happy to wait. My wife and I both ordered the Mexican Platter consisting of a Chile Relleno, a beef street taco, and an enchilada with red sauce, and of course the obligatory beans and rice. The food showed up in about 10 minutes - and wow, what a delight. This was the best, most authentic, homemade-tasting Mexican food we have ever eaten. Everything was freshly made from scratch, and piping hot. The multitude of individual flavors was amazing. We are very glad to have found this little place... but now we just don't know if we can ever eat in one of those franchise Mexican places ever again... We've been spoiled by the real stuff... Don't let the lack of smiles fool you, the staff here are friendly and attentive. It is after noon on a Sunday, New Years Day, and I asked for a breakfast dish and they were happy to comply. Had the Chorizo and it was very tasty, not greasy like some places. The place outside isn't the most attractive but inside it was very clean and comfortable. The food rates 4 stars, but the service rates a 2. The gentleman waiter was nice and attentive, but the cook/co-operator was more interested in personal conversations. I went to pay and she wouldn't even look at me. Instead she continued a conversation in spanish with friends. She told told me the amount I owed, gave me change, and honestly acted like I wasn't welcome in her restaurant. The food was very good and reminiscent of the food I grew up with in El Paso. This place may actually be the only game in the sleepy border town of Presidio, TX, but it certainly doesn't act that way. Everything about it is homey, happy, and clean. I found this place last February as a friend and I made our way out of Big Bend. We'd subsisted on Ramen noodles with beef jerky, and oatmeal for a few days, so we were looking for hearty and genuine food of any kind. Turns out, there's not much culinary activity as you head into the Rio Grand canyonlands...who knew? You'd think there would be a Shoney's or something...nope. We were getting scared that we'd have to knock on doors, cross the border, or make something out of gas station chips and canned dip. Then, we saw some civilization and EL PATIO! The service and the ambiance were great. The waiter was extremely attentive and friendly. He may have taken us for Coyotes or drug runners, but even still, he wasn't obligated to refill my water after two sips, and yet he did. I'm going to confess that I rarely order anything but fajitas at Mexican places, I really just don't know why. Perhaps its a good standard by which to judge all Tex-Mex equally? Well, at El Patio, they really pulled out all the stops - most places they give you five out of eight possible sides (i.e. sour cream, guac, cheese, beans, rice, etc.), at EP, you get them all, along with red and green enchilada sauce. You can truly make a beautiful fajita-mess of your own face. Another plus, is that the beef tasted like it was fresh off the good part of a steer's ass (in a good way). Anything else? They have an ice cream scooper, an awesome statue of Don Quixote, and a great beer selection. Only real drawback is the location. It is not accessible by Bus, Metro, or any other public transportation anywhere. If you're in Marfa, Big Bend, or running contraband from El Toro, this is a great sidetrack. read more

Nothing fancy or appealing at all about this place. It needs to be jazzed up a bit and not so cold and uninviting. Meaning appearance and staff. Maybe there's another El Patio somewhere else in Presidio that I missed, because I did not see in this place what some other reviewers saw. And I'm pretty easy to please. I don't care about my salsa unless it is straight from the Pace jar that I could have purchased. I don't care about my chips unless they're straight from the Tostitos bag that I could have purchased. But come on. At least try to fake like you're doing the real stuff. I'm a pure, lilly-white girl and could do better Mexican food. read more

We were taking the 170 through Big Bend Ranch SP for the views, coming down from Marfa. As occurs in Marfa, nothing of interest was open for breakfast when we left town. By the time we hit Presidio we were starving. We hit the yelp app on the Nexus Phone and El Patio was the only answer. I'm so glad it was. Best Roja sauce ever on the immaculate cheese enchiladas with generous and perfect salad, rice and beans. The Chile Relleno was perfectly prepared and the fresh cheese oozed from the delicately egg dipped delicious green chiles. The fresh salsa was to die for. read more

We stopped here because of the good reviews already on Yelp. The highlight of our experience were the chips and salsa & the tres leches. The chips seemed homemade. The salsa was a yummy flavor and just the right amount of spice (I wouldn't agree with others that it's really spicy by any means). The tres leches was delicious! Our meals were eh. I had the Mexican plate (don't assume you are getting a regular crispy beef taco...you really get a deep fried lump of tasteless meat in a shell). The enchilada was bland. The beans are pretty tasty. Our lunch for 4 people was $80, which seems insanely expensive for what we had (we didn't have any alcohol). *Beware the salad bar is NOT free. At least not for those from out of town. There is a difference between prompt service and being rushed to order. We barely had a chance to glance at the menu before our waiter insisted on taking our order. I hesitatingly ordered the house special plate which samples their specialties as best I could tell from a 10 second glance at the menu. I did really like the crunchy tacos. The cheese enchiladas were just okay, the rice nothing special, the green sauce had no pork pieces. My wife and I both liked the chili rellenos, she more than I. My wife and I took the drive from Terlingua to Presidio to see what they offered for lunch. Ended up at El Patio Cafe because it was all we could find. We went on a Friday while they had their lunch buffet. As it turns out, it was really good. The restaurant was very clean. The food was great, and the chips and salsa was even better. Our food was cheesy, creamy, spicy, and hot. All things that you want out of a traditional Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa were solid. The salsa was quite spicy and really crept up on us as we ate. I got the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The sauce was more creamy than most, but had really good flavor, and tons of cheese. The rice had great flavor and the retried beans were pretty standard. My girlfriend got the Mexican platter with a cheese enchilada with red sauce which had great flavor, chili relleno which was a little spicy, and beef taco. We also got a couple tortillas on the side. They were excellent. We also grabbed pumpkin empanadas at the counter. Hit the sweet spot. The service was very good. Our drinks were always fun and the people were very nice. Were in the area Memorial Weekend. My husband had read some pretty good reviews and that was the main reason for stopping in. Well, being Tex Mex, the whole experience was totally lacking in every aspect! We walked in through the back door, no one acknowledged us. We stood at the front near the register completely ignored until I finally asked if we could sit anywhere. The young man at the register I had asked the seating question to brought us a menu but no welcome or even a hello.
