I went to El Nopal for my birthday celebration with a group of about 30 people. I had called twice ahead of time to let them know, but when I checked in at the host stand, they didn't seem aware of the reservation. Because of that, I'm taking off one star. That said, they did an amazing job recovering. They accommodated us very quickly, arranged tables, and had us all seated within about 5 minutes. For such a large group, that was impressive. Even more impressive--we were in and out within about two hours. We ordered a lot of drinks, and the staff did a great job keeping track of everything. A few people had to ask for items again, but overall, the orders were accurate, and the drinks were strong and good. They also made my birthday special with two tequila shots, a sombrero, and singing Happy Birthday, which I loved. When it came time to pay, we formed a line and handled bills one by one, which ended up being really efficient. I also appreciated that they had vegan and vegetarian options, so everyone in our group was able to find something to enjoy. Overall, despite the initial mix-up, they were very accommodating and made the experience fun and smooth. I'd definitely come back. read more

Located in the mall and so convenient, this restaurant is easy and very pretty! Love the ambiance! The colors and carvings are great! Had dinner here on a Friday and it was amazing. The service was ok, the server wasn't as attentive as I am used to. The food was amazing, ordered and it was freshly made and to the table in less than seven minutes. The margaritas were delicious as well. Some of the best Mexican food in Louisville! These places are numerous throughout the city, but their inexpensive and tasty dishes are consistently solid!! You start with some of their complimentary chips and salsa. Chips are light, but strong enough to stand up to the salsa w/o much breakage. Hot salsa has a little bite to it, whereas the mild is exactly that. Flavorful, but won't scar anyone's tongue. I had the #2 lunch combo, which is burrito, beans and rice. I passed on the beans, as I had plenty of food w my meal and the chips and salsa. Most Mexican rice is rather bland, this is the same. Not bad, but adding a little salsa kicks it up. Burrito was full of delicious tender chicken, and very filling Great Mexican decor, fantastic food, and service is speedy and friendly. Never had a bad experience here! read more

Came here for to split a pitcher of beer and chips and queso with a friend. The pitchers are very reasonably priced but the service isn't great. It took about 15 minutes for them to bring the beer over and there was only 3 tables in the place. read more

This is always a great Mexican food experience. I really love the atmosphere and the service is fast. They offer big 36 ounce beers for cheap price as well. I usually get the combination number 11, which is one burrito, one taco, and one enchilada. It is so good for $8.99. With all that food and free chips and salsa this is an excellent deal. So... at the Mall and decided to get lunch and knowing El Nopal as being a consistent Mexican restaurant we went in. I ordered a beef taco and a beef burrito. The beef was horrible!! It looked like it was fried from a Kroger package, gray, dry as heck and with no seasoning. At a minimum, they could have thrown in a package of Old El Paso taco mix or salt and pepper. I keep coming back not just because of their cheap Delicious tasting margarita ($15 the Lime pitcher) and good food, but because of the staff. Always kind & polite and very attentive. My favorite waitress is Lisney!! With her kind smile I feel welcome as I walk through the door. I took my boyfriend here for the first time and he was amazed at their very affordable prices that he thought the food wasn't going to be good. My sister & I stopped in for a bite to eat and a drink while we shopped. The drinks were the best things we received! We both ordered chicken enchiladas, she had refried beans & I had rice. Both were ! We received what appeared to be a split chicken breast, pulled apart and stuck in a mushy tortilla wrap. The meat was DRY & flavorless. The rice had a strange taste to it and the beans were not much better. We asked if we were supposed to get sides of lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and cheese and were told no...not would you like for me to get an order for you! Was not satisfied with the service either from the individual waiting our table. I've heard great things about this restaurant chain and wanted to have the same mind blowing experience my sister described...sadly, my first impression was not great and I'll probably not return. I went to this location for a business meeting I have never seen such poor customer service...from the time I walked through the door I was confused and dumbfounded by the lack of welcoming a customer to your establishment to serving the food, to the lack of having proper utensils to eat, to feeling sick after we left! Low rating for the really bad communication. We waited 30+min for a table (after being quoted 10-15) which..fine. BUT we asked to leave our # so we could at least shop and they said no. So we waited. Then two girls came in and were seated RIGHT away because they got a call their table was ready. That was activating, why not be consistent? This place is not good. I ordered a burrito. It was simply meat in a tortilla. Nothing else. Served with some sorry rice and beans. The so called salsa is essentially just tomatoes. I'm usually apprehensive about mall restaurants, but I was really hungry and I have seen some other el nopal around town. It is pretty standard Tex-mex, but the service was excellent! I received a mild and a hot salsa with the chips. Mixed together they made a great tasting dip for the crispy chips. I ordered the pollo fundido and I'll have to say it is one of the better versions of this dish that I've had! So much food! I was stuffed and sated at the end. Plus the prices are very reasonable. A general rule of thumb to me is, if it's located in the mall, it's probably a terrible dining option, and this place definitely follows that rule. We had a medium sized party of like 7 people, and all had margarita pitchers, which had virtually no alcohol in any of them. My carnitas burrito was the driest, toughest pork I've ever encountered (think how dry and crunchy the turkey was where Clark Griswold was gnawing on the piece of turkey in Christmas Vacation) it literally bounced off the table in my "drop test" like a marble on glass. Beef jerky is more tender and palatable than this burrito. Their salsa was absolutely repulsive....this terrible blend of ketchup and chef boyardee sauce. I'll never come back. They do get 1 bonus star for the cherries in the margarita pitchers, those were good. But not $20-a-person good. read more

I know this place has been around forever and I forget about it but luckily we needed a warm place to eat and I remembered this was on the backside of the Mall. After finding out there weren't enough seats together for a movie last week (and I was craving chips and salsa), we drove around and hit them up for some delicious Mexican. Glad I remembered they were there because it totally hit the spot! It wasn't very busy and the hostess was super nice. Only issue was having to keep asking for extra salsa. Don't be fooled, they bring you two containers of salsa but one is HOT and the other is not. So we put aside the hot and went through 3 of their mild. I wasn't able to convey that we didn't need the hot so I had to tell him to take it back each time. I would rather have them not bring it to the table at all but at least we stopped him the last time from even putting it down. I'm sure he thought we were nuts as we all raised a flat palm to him as he approached the table. The only thing missing was the song part after we all yell "Stop!". Poor guy, he's probably still rattled. Next time I will look up how to tell him "No hot sauce please" in Spanish. :) read more

Only giving this location 1 star due to the service. The food was very good, however, we are from out of town and one of my party asked for a white sauce which is traditionally a ranch side. They brought out a bowl with white cheese and said, "this is our white sauce." Upon getting the check, we had a charge of $5.00 for queso. The server never told our party of the $5 charge. After confronting the server about the charge, we were treated rudely and the business refused to remove the charge. They also THREATENED us with mall security if we did not pay for it. Ordered delivery on 5/5/20 and it was the worst Mexican we've ever eaten! I ordered the nacho fajitas with chicken- there was absolutely no cheese sauce on it, the chicken was way overcooked, there were no tomatoes and the peppers and onions weren't even cooked fully. Horrible! My sister ordered the Burrito Al Carbon and there was no cheese sauce on hers either and the food tasted as if it had been sitting for a long time. Wonder why? Probably because we ordered delivery and it took over 1 hour 15 minutes for it to get here and we live 5 minutes away! I know COVID-19 has delivery times super long but this was ridiculous.
