Upon arrival, I marveled at the beautiful decor and how fast we were greeted and seated. Our server Joshua, was attentive and quickly placed our drink orders. The complimentary salsa was some of the best I've had. The salsa was chilled perfectly and very fresh. The veggies were perfectly chopped and crunchy just how I like it. My virgin daiquiri was great as well and was very eye-pleasing. After placing our food order, it did not take long to come out. Both of us agreed that our food was pretty good overall. My friend wasn't overly impressed. He said it wasn't anything to write home about. My quesadilla was a little...watery...not sure if it was from the meat or the veggies. I've had better to be honest. But overall, I would definitely visit here again to try another dish. If you're in the area, check out Julia's Mexican Restaurant.

Decided to go Mexican. It's a tiny bit sketchy looking on the outside being in a strip mall front, but Don Alejo has so much character. The inside is beautiful with an intricate floor plan and DIY wood features. Table lights were so pretty with that opaque stained glass look. Tables and booths were clean and had nice style. Staff was fast and nice. I don't care if they make the greatest quesadilla of all time, if their chips and salsa aren't good, it's not a good spot. This place nailed both. They use the thicker, denser chips that I love and the salsa was perfect consistency and had a great flavor. Not too spicy, not too bland. Just right to throw back 50 chips before the food gets out. Prices were insanely cheap. 3.50 for a chicken quesadilla. Tell me the last time you got multiple entrees at a sit down spot and got out for less than 7 dollars! Quesadillas were on the smaller size but I'd gladly pay 3.50 for them. Really good amount of cheese and chicken on them and it tasted great. Good on these guys man. They knocked it out of the park at 1:30 on a Friday afternoon. If I so happen to take another detour to Hartselle, I will be giving them more business

I saw the great reviews of this place, especially for the birria tacos, which are one of my…read morefavorite dishes, and knew I wanted to try it out. This restaurant started as a food truck but saw enough success that it's now opened two brick and mortar locations, one in Decatur and the other in Priceville, so that seemed like a good indicator. I went for a late lunch after work around 2 PM a few weeks ago. The restaurant has a small, slightly bumpy/torn up parking lot and a curiously large step up into the restaurant -- watch your footing, as I almost fell forward trying to walk inside. The restaurant is small. You enter and are greeted by a nice bar area; go down the hall and it has maybe 5 tables at the end, along with restrooms. It did take me a while for anyone to offer me seating. It seemed like only one person was waiting tables. Though he made eye contact with me a few times from the serving area down the hall, he didn't acknowledge me until I walked down the hall to look around and see if anyone was available to help me. He then asked if I had a carryout order (I think -- pretty limited English on his part and even more limited Spanish on mine), and I said no but that I'd like to sit and eat. After that, he promptly seated me and took my drink order. Chips and salsa came out after that, and my food order and eventual check were timely, though I'd never really describe his demeanor as particularly friendly. Not the end of the world, but I wish I'd felt more welcome. The chips were solid - warm and fresh - but the salsa wasn't especially flavorful but for a strong cilantro vibe. I was starving, though, so I munched happily enough until my order arrived. I got the quesabirria combo, which comes with two quesabirria tacos and rice and beans. These tacos tend to be filling and many combos elsewhere come with three; personally, I think two is plenty, though I'd say the price is a little higher here than comparable spots I've tried. The rice and beans were exactly average...or, they averaged out to average, lol. Rice slightly below average (low flavor, a few slightly undercooked/crunchy bits), beans slightly above (pleasantly smoky), and so on and so forth. I was primarily here for the main event: birria tacos. And unfortunately, despite the rave reviews I read, I thought these were really disappointing. They didn't skimp on meat, at least, but...despite being generously portioned, the meat didn't have a ton of flavor. It was a little chewier than the silky, melting beef I've had at other places. But the worst part was they were overwhelmingly - OVERWHELMINGLY - greasy. Don't get me wrong, birria is by nature a rich dish and I wasn't expecting to get up and skip away home after a light meal, but... It was so greasy that the taco shells, which are usually pleasantly crispy after grilling, were for the most part sopping wet, even on my first bite. Every time I picked a taco up, fatty juices/grease spilled from the edges. And when I squeezed, a stream practically ran onto the plate. You'd think at least with this much fat/grease they'd be more flavorful, but they really were not a flavor bomb. They weren't inedible, but I must admit I left feeling disappointed and having not adequately fulfilled my craving. I know there are lots of well-regarded Mexican spots in Decatur, so I suppose I'll keep trying. Hopefully, I came on an off day. I wish this restaurant the best and I hope their success continues; even though it was not for me on this visit, it's clearly popular with others.

We enjoy getting their fresh guacamole to go along with the complimentary chips and salsa. We also love the chori-shrimp dish. It's our go-to and a good portion for my husband and me to split. We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.
