Typical TexMex ambiance but the place appeared to be a bit in disarray and in need of some organization. The bar top had a phone and stack of menus along with employee cell phones charging that had to be moved for me and other patrons to sit. The food was very tasty and a good size portion. The only thing I did not care for was the complimentary salsa as it lacked flavor and was watery. I tried the pineapple jalapeño margarita which was very tasty and had a bit more kick than i thought it would have which was fine with me. Service was prompt and courteous. read more

Having lived close to the Mexican border in every border state and having traveled extensively in Mexico, I can assure you there is nothing authentic about this slop. The menus were tattered and many dishes reeked of "Mexican " food made for tourists. I asked lots of questions and had to switch to Spanish because the servers were not very conversant in English. All of their answers were vague. Finally, I settled on the mole enchiladas and a friend got a burrito. Let me tell you. That sauce is not mole, and the sauce for the burrito appears to have come from a can. For the high prices, there was not even the usual half-hearted sad sack plop of rice and beans to accompany the dishes. Then there was the service which was grudging and sullen. The place was clean, but smacked of a tourist's idea of what a Mexican restaurant interior should look like. The menu claims that they are the home of a "two draft beers for the price of one" deal. It's not a deal. It's the same price for the two as it is for a large glass. That's a sneaky gyp. The owners claim on the menu to be from Mexico serving authentic food. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. There is much better Mexican food in Tallahassee than this rot. The only saving grace was the flan which was actually pretty good. read more

Last week, my wife went to have dinner with 3 co-workers from her office. She offered to bring me dinner home and the first problem was ordering my dinner something simple cheese enchiladas, instead of chicken or beef, they say no, when she'd arrive home, I was missing a side order of beans, we call next day, they say because it was a different manager than the day before they could do nothing about it. This is my go-to restaurant every time I visit Tallahassee. The restaurant is clean, festive and the service is excellent. The menu is expansive and has everything you could ever have a craving for, including tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, Mexican lasagna, and birria. My advice, be hungry when you visit because the portions are huge. I mean huge. I ordered the El Jalisco burrito and was asked if I wanted one or two. Look at my picture, I don't know how anyone could eat two because the burrito fills a platter. I ordered a side of rice, and was given a side plate with 2 huge scoops of rice on it. Not a petite little side bowl, but enough rice that a plate was needed. I also highly recommended the Birria Quesadillas. The meat was succulent and flavorful, and came with a side platter of cilantro, red onions, salsa verde and birria consommé. It was absolutely outstanding. It's a meal in itself. If enchiladas are what you crave, be warned because you get four of them. Four. Enough for 2 people. If you are in the Tallahassee area, do yourself a favor and visit this restaurant. This all started because I realized we never have tacos together. Seriously speaking, 10+ years of knowing one another and never ever had we had tacos together. This has changed. We've now had tacos with a friend. Where? El Jalisco. And well, just as an FYI, they do offer other things besides tacos, but we went for the tacos. The third person in this venture had a burrito instead. Anyhow, we had an early dinner last Sunday night there. The wait for a table was 15-20 minutes, so we looked around to see if we could sit at the bar and we were lucky. This turned out to be both a positive and negative all in one. Positive as we got attended earlier, negative as it was slow and we merely had our guacamole brought out to us. Apparently if you order guacamole at a table, they make it in front of you, and well, sitting at the bar, we missed out on this experience. In terms of food and drink, we started by ordering some alcohol. Two of us ordered beer, the third of us a frozen margarita. They messed up the order by giving us a regular margarita, but oh well. We didn't say anything as the person who ordered it just felt that a margarita was a margarita. That and she wound up getting another margarita later and that one was effectively frozen. That being said, they bring out complimentary chips and salsa and we went to town on those. So much so that when the guacamole came around that only contributed to us inhaling. We inhaled so much that two out of the three of us didn't finish our entrees. My friend couldn't finish her chicken burrito and so she took it home, while I struggled eating my third steak taco. I ended up leaving bits of it as it made no sense to take so little. That and I had a flight to catch. Overall, I liked the restaurant. I found it better than average. I still, though, have a preferred taco place in town that isn't this restaurant. I hope to return and try other dishes, and more than anything, I really hope to see the guacamole being made live. I made a HUGE mistake passing El Jalisco as my GPS directed me to La Tienda's the night before. But, this afternoon I got to double back by mistake and it was the best experience I've had in Tallahassee. I almost threw the whole town away but they came in with superhero capes and saved the day. I came around 12:30/1 and was faced with a busy restaurant. I sat at the bar, ordered my frozen strawberry and peach margarita and scanned the whole menu. Their menu is long but it makes sense and if you're anything like me you'll be there for awhile trying not to order too much but making sure you get enough. I ordered the pick three a tamale and two orders of Chile Con Carne. The description had me thinking it was bigger pieces of steak tips sautéed in red Chile sauce but it was more like shredded pieces soaked in sauce. It was spicy and had a great flavor so I'm not complaining, I just wish I would've ordered another side of rice with it. The TAMALE tugged at my heart!!! PERFECTION!! I haven't had a authentic, moist flavor like that since I was younger back in Portland and use to buy them from the grandmas outside of one of our neighborhoods. I could've ate it without the sauce and still been completely satisfied but once I poured the sauce on and the queso it took me to food heaven. It comes with rice and beans and I ordered a side of queso and all three items were PERFECT as well!!! I always order churros with extra cinnamon sugar if they sell them and theirs was again, PERFECT!! The chips and salsa was good as well and the margaritas was more flavor and less liquor. I just want to give a SHOUT-OUT to all of the staff that consistently worked hard, to the manager that was hands on and to the HOST that caught a big tray full of food that one of the servers almost dropped. How could any customer complain about a longer wait when you can easily look around and see that these people came to work and understood the assignment. Everything I ate had flavor and El Jalisco HANDS DOWN has the BEST TAMALE AND QUESO I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant (from Florida to Oregon!!!) Picked this restaurant because they serve until 10 pm on a Sunday night (so many places close earlier) and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the Caldo de Camaron shrimp soup (a bit spicy if you like spicy) which came with corn or flour tortillas and rice. The server was attentive the whole meal and we sat outside-chill patio! The last review I left (3 stars), we had a bigger party at a busier time of day, and the owner still contacted me to find out what could be done to improve. During my most recent visit, it was very empty at the beginning of lunch, but our server was still rushing us, bringing to-go containers when we were still eating (15 minutes into eating). I'm not sure where to begin....2-4-1 drinks all day, every day, the best queso blanco in Tallahassee, and the most rockin' chicken, steak, shrimp fajita combo at an excellent price! Tableside guac (we did not have) is a service typically featured at more "upscale" Mexican joints, but El Jalisco has it all! This review is obviously geared towards the North Monroe location, but I have dined at their Southwood restaurant and found both experiences to be quite delightful. In the words of my very own father, "This is some of the best Mexican food I have ever had!" I don't know how much weight that statement holds, but to me, it means I will be returning, especially given its convenient location relative to my home. If you are craving reasonably priced Mexican fare or are just looking to enjoy a casual dinner out in Midtown, El Jalisco is sure to please the palate! My friend and I ordered the Master Parrillada which is basically their fajita feast which comes with all the meats (carnitas, shrimp, steak, chicken, etc) on top of a bed green bell peppers and onions and two sides of rice, beans, lettuce and tortillas. I used to frequent this place like crazy in college, so when I returned recently to visit, it was amazing to see the growth!! A great spot for a HUGE and potent Margarita, El Jalisco is quite generous with their drinks as college students want more bang for their bucks! I had a delicious trio plate with Beef, Chicken and Shrimp that came out sizzling and tasty!! My friends and I visited around 6pm and we got our food in less than 15min, better than I remember in the past!
