Started with chips and guacamole. The guacamole was watered down and not very good. Salsa has a strong fish taste. Chips were stale. Carne asada was dry. Carnitas were very greasy. I won't be coming back. They either didn't have the air conditioner on or it was set so high that we couldn't feel it and were sweating on a 100 degrees day.

Passing through the area and since my favorite Thai place was closed for the day, decided to eat here at El Grullense. I'm not sure why this place rates well on Yelp as customer service and food needs serious improvement. Our waitress was either having a bad day or ??? ....As several simple request during our visit, just wasn't understood, heard or refused to be carried out. For example: ordered hot water with lemon and was told they don't serve hot water (WTH -?!?). Confused, we asked, if they have a stove to cook food, then you have a stove to boil water or microwave it. Questioning the waitress, did get us our hot water... but why was it necessary for us to further probe for it?!? My friend ordered plain cheese enchiladas, was served enchiladas WITH chicken. Order took about 30 min to receive and we didn't have the time to wait another 30 min for a new order. We asked if the over head fan can be turned off, our waitress said yes. We waited and waited .... fan remained on, so we just asked to be seated at another table. Law breakers get three strikes ...and this restaurant actually made more strikes that I wasn't going ad nauseum about. Three strikes, you're out !!! And very worthy of a shiny 1 star review from me. Otherwise ...free chips & salsa, with chips that taste stale. BTW, no alcohol served here. There is a large free parking lot, decent restrooms. Stay safe and healthy (mind, body and soul) Yelping out there :)

So good! We were greeted right away. Our order came out in less than 5 minutes! We ordered an asada burrito and 2 soft tacos. Great pit stop on the way to Red Rock Canyon state park. Would love to try the menudo next time, but it was so hot outside that I wasn't in the mood for soup haha. They also sell a bunch of Mexican snacks.

Alright...if you've seen my Yelp reviews...you know I eat A LOT of Mexican food. This jumped the rankings in one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. Their spices were flat out incredible. I didn't know a bacon burrito could be this good. To top it all off, their homemade salsa was absolutely FIRE. I'm thoroughly impressed with this spot. I work in Mojave about once a month, I'll be here everytime I'm there.

Just stopped by El Grullense on my drive from Los Angeles to Mammoth Lakes, Mojave is a small town and a good half way point to take a break. This restaurant has a sign out front that says "GRAND OPENING" but upon entering I think it's safe to say that they've been around for a while... The interior is dated and seems extremely run down. But I was taught not to judge a book by its cover, so here goes nothing. Upon walking in the 1 employee I saw working was wearing her mask around her chin. This irks me the wrong way and I start to get this feeling that says "Don't do it Tom.." But regardless I proceeded. I ordered a Chicken Burrito. Easy, quick and honestly quite difficult to mess up (especially at a Mexican food restaurant). The food came out quick (like surprisingly quick) but the service didn't make up for the flavor... This might have been the saltiest burrito I've ever had. It boggles my mind how a Mexican food joint can be so oblivious to how bad one of their simplest menu items tastes... When I say it was salty, it's a bit of an understatement.. Imagine you are surfing on the southern coast of California and a wave absolutely swallows you whole. Your noes, eyes and mouth get invaded with ocean water and it's difficult to breathe because of how salty your palette is. You starting to catch my drift? Anyways.. Wont be returning. 1.5/10 (not 1/10 because the service was actually fast)

It's little past 08:00 in the morning, Tuesday, April 06, 2021, and I've arrived a El Grullense to enjoy menudo for breakfast.

El Grullense is a new Mexican restaurant that offers authentic, Mexican cuisine. This fine restaurant specializes in seafood, but they have something on the menu for every taste. I actually visited this fine restaurant on April 5 and 6, 2021, and I'm just getting around to writing a review. Sorry! As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the counter, and the posted specials. The cashier's station is to the immediate right as you enter. The doors behind the separation of the counter lead to the kitchen. With the exception of the counter, the furniture in the restaurant is entirely upholstered booths, separated by low partitions. The walls near the kitchen and the entrance are wood-paneled, and hand-drawn posters are everywhere, advertising daily specials, and special items that aren't on the printed menu. With the exception of the computerized cash register at the cashier's station, and the hi-def television monitors, the decor is pure 1970's and is as "old school" as it gets. The menu includes all of your Mexican favorites, and specializes in seafood. The other side of the menu lists selections for children, including a few American items. There are hand-printed signs posted everywhere posting specials and items not on the menu. Notice the menu includes a "Hamburger and Fries" selection, for those who crave a burger at a Mexican restaurant. Any item on the menu, along with daily specials, is available any time the restaurant is open. Sometimes... you just have to enjoy a burger for breakfast... I went with menudo for breakfast, and was happy to see the serving was very large, and included a generous portion of tender, honeycomb tripe, cut to the perfect size. The broth was brick red, savory, flavorful, slightly spicy, but not at all hot. My bowl of menudo didn't include hominy, which most menudo includes, but it's fairly common to have hominy omitted. It makes room for more of the delicious tripe! Great bowl of menudo! Naturally, I ate every drop of this delicious breakfast "comfort food" classic. Condiments included diced white onion with diced cilantro, a package of three corn tortillas - you could go for flour is you chose - a few small dried chili peppers, and a small cup of some of the hottest salsa that I've ever eaten. I know all about the little chili peppers, and I know what happens to me, so I didn't touch them. I dipped into the cup of salsa, and it was too hot for my taste. The night before, I dined at this fine restaurant, and went with the #19 combination, which is "Carne Asada con Camarones." My meal started out with large, warm-from-the-kitchen fresh tortilla chips and a bowl of "House Salsa," which is the best salsa I've ever enjoyed. My amazing dinner came with five seasoned, juicy shrimp, that were grilled to perfection. El Grullense gives you a very large portion of seasoned, perfectly grilled, thin-cut carne asada, that melts in your mouth. Both the shrimp and the carne asada were smothered in grilled, white onion, which added amazing flavor. The rice was great, but nothing spectacular, but the beans... oh the refried beans! They were some of most amazing refried beans that I've enjoyed in a long time. They were mostly creamy and smooth, but there were a few coarsely-mashed beans, which makes for a great combination. The beans were topped with a generous portion of anjo cheese, and you could taste the lard! These beans are not only delicious, but they're truly authentic! The small side salad included lettuce, tomato, diced onion, a dab of guacamole, and a couple slices of lime. Salad dressing was "crema," which is essentially sour cream mixed with lime juice. Everything was super fresh and delicious. El Grullense is new to Mojave, but the restaurant serves some of the best Mexican food that I've eaten for a long time, so I truly believe they'll do well with the locals, and visitors passing through town on Sierra Highway. Welcome to Mojave, CA, El Grullense!
