I've been visiting Malaespina for over a decade -- from my time living in Madrid to every trip back…read more-- and one thing has never changed: it's easily one of the best spots in Madrid for a no-frills, delicious tapas meal and amazing sangria. The quality of the food has remained consistent for the 10 years I've been visiting! Tucked away just off Sol, Malaespina is the epitome of a classic Madrid taverna. The inviting, unpretentious atmosphere, the cozy charm, the prices, the energy -- it's hard to capture it all in words. There's a certain magic at Malaespina. The tavern has been around for hundreds of years, and I often wonder what it was like a century ago. I'm always amazed that such a gem exists in the heart of Madrid, a city center filled with tourist traps. Malaespina draws both locals and tourists -- and for good reason. The food quality to price ratio is unbeatable. On our most recent visit, we had huevos estrellados, tortilla tapas, sangria, and espressos, and spent about $20 for the two of us. You really can't beat that! Here's hoping they stick around for many more years to come.

When we first sat down they gave us a welcome bruschetta and bread for free which were pretty decent portions. We then ordered our food and it was pretty good as well. We ordered their half chicken (pollo asado con patatas), sirloin steak, and Malaspina tosta. The portions were huge and we definitely over ordered. We thought they were more the size of tapas but each dish was a huge portion itself which definitely isn't a bad thing. The food tasted pretty good but I think it just lacked flavor occasionally. All the meat was cooked well and was very juicy, just could use a little more flavor. Otherwise everything was good. Solid 4 stars

If I could give 10 stars to a bar (it's a restaurant but in Spain it goes as bar), this would be…read morethe place. It's the most authentic place you could eat some delicious food. I am not big on pork or sea food so I directly go for their steaks. You have to order tosta de escalopines thinly sliced sirloin on a bed of Brie cheese on toasted baguette. It's the entire baguette, cut in half and toasted. I think the most important detail is the rock salt they put on the entire construction. I sometimes crave for this simple and delicious food and do not have any reservations going there by myself and eating the entire thing alone so that I don't have to share with anyone. It's cheap, service is friendly and excellent. Sit down and watch people if you can get your head up from indulging your entirety into your food.

The service unfortunately can be a hit and miss . The first day we went the service was terrible. Super rude, the server- Carlos had no personality, literally tossed everything on the table- he had apparently helped my parents the night before and they raved about him but unfortunately we can't say the same. The next night we all went back (my dad loved this place and wanted us to experience what he had ) and had a new server- Angel who was phenomenal. Tapas never stopped coming, drinks always filled, he was so attentive, charismatic and just made the experience amazing.

Reseña en ingles y español…read more Tinto y tapas was the perfect place to stop in for a mid-day snack (or lunch) after touring the museums all morning. We arrived when they opened at 1:00pm. Within 15 minutes all the tables were full. Our servers were nice and attentive. I was happy that there were multiple vegetarian tapas to choose from (which are hard to find in Madrid). We ordered a spinach and ricotta empanada, a sweet onion and cheese empanada, and a Margherita pizza. Everything was delicious. The pizza was excellent. We couldn't finish everything. We left full and happy. Salimos llenos y felices.

The chicken curry toast was flavorful and the slice of bread it was spread on was perfectly crispy. The empanadas were both delicious and perfectly spiced but I do wish they could have been warmer, especially the one with cheese. The server was very nice and attentive.
