El Corte Ingles is like the Spanish equivalent of John Lewis or Fenwick that we have in the UK. This massive store (8 floors!) is located in the centre of Palma, close to the Cathedral and Harbour as well as the main shopping area with other major retailers such as Zara, H&M and C&A being located nearby.
We initially came in as we wanted to see how Spanish department stores compared to the United Kingdom, and we ended up going all the way up to the 5th floor to visit their in-store restaurant, which was very good. I had the steak and chips which were excellent and relatively reasonably priced at 12 euros. In other restaurants, this would be almost double the price.
There is also a supermarket in one of the basement floors with an underground car park attached. Compared to the Marks & Spencer food halls in the UK, it seemed a little disappointing though, kind of just like a Tesco with normal food available.
There is an apparently even larger store near the intermodal station and I am not sure how this is even possible due to how ginormous this place is.
The staff members that I encountered were pleasant and said hello as I passed - this is nice as some department store staff in the UK can be very snooty and act as if they are better than you just because they work in the best shop in town.
I would recommend that you come to this shop to browse the pretty things and have a coffee or a meal at the top floor café. The restaurant also boasts amazing views of the Cathedral and Harbour as well as some planes taking off from Palma Airport in the distance. read more
