This little hidden spot is in the back of a bodega. The store has a great selection of Mexican and South American foods and snacks along with some other provisions. In the back is a sit-down restaurant with wait service. It is decorated so nicely. You do not realize you are in a bodega. They had a great selection on their menu. We decided to split some mixed fajitas. They bring out complimentary chips, salsa, and some sauces. The sauces are great for both the chips and the fajitas. Our fajitas came out shortly after. They came with tortilla shells, rice and beans. The amount of meat was amazing. 7 good sized grilled shrimp, chicken and steak. The steak and chicken were cut up small which is good for fajitas. They had great flavor and as mentioned great with sauces. We did ask for some limes which ampt out the flavor too. Great little place we would defiitely try again. read more

El Changarro is located in a shoppers delight of a strip mall (Kohl's, Ross and Petco), but with probably the worst entrances and exits of any shopping center in Bensalem. My family was recently pulled into this small shop by the aromas of a to-go order that walked out of the entrance. The front of the business is a grocery store jam packed with Hispanic grocery items. Walking towards the back opens up into a clean, bright and inviting restaurant area. You order by walking up to the cashier area. The kitchen is in full view right behind the ordering area and there are plenty of tables. The staff had a small army of ladies cutting up fresh ingredients and cooking away as the orders came in. They were smiling and waving to my 4 year old. Extremely kind and nice people working there. We ordered Tacos de Birria, a Chicken Quesadilla, Nachos with beans/cheese and Sopes. Everyone enjoyed their food. The quesadilla was a bit drippy and probably our least favorite item. The nachos were ridiculously good - the chips were so fresh and crispy. I tried three different types of Sopes with my order - chorizo, pork and steak. They weren't easy to handle so I had to knife and fork it. My wife and youngest tore up the double shelled tacos that had Birria steak in them. We had plenty of leftovers for another meal. For our second order we did take out and I ordered a Torta with the birria steak, onions and avocado. The bread was fresh and very good. It was a delicious choice and enough for two meals. The prices were fair at $10 for the three tacos, $11 for a torta and $10.25 for the sopes. The house sauces (salsa verde and chipotle) were pretty bland for me, but my family liked them. Best Mexican snack I have ever had! Chicharrones Preparados - According to the web this dish is made out of leftover pork cracklings, which are sometimes fried again before being pressed down to remove the excess fat. Well to be honest I feel a bit embarrassed because the whole time I was eating this magical Mexican snack I thought I was eating the softest most delicious tender onions I have ever had, LOL. After reading up on this appetizer I have found this was most likely pickled pork skins. Chorizo con Huevo (Scrambled Eggs with Sausage) - Ahh I have to be honest the bread was not to my likening at all. I would not order this again but the cheese which I want to say was cotija cheese was a great addition on top of the Chorizo. Tinga (Shredded Chicken) - The GF got this dish and said it was pretty good. I cannot recall the taste as we ordered from here over two weeks ago but still can taste that marvelous Chicharrones Preparados when thinking about it. Located in a strip mall there is plenty of parking. The front of the business is a grocery store with a plethora of Hispanic items. To access the restaurant just walk to the back of the store. The restaurant was quite large. I would say there was seating for 45 people easy. I walked up to the cashier and told her I would like to eat inside and placed my order. I ordered the tacos which come 3 to an order. The young lady asked me what kind I would like and then informed me that I could mix them. I picked chicken, Al pastor, and beef. I ordered my tacos supreme with the sour cream, lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese. I also ordered a side of refried beans and rice. For my beverage I picked the hibiscus tea that was premade in a beverage dispenser. They also had tamarind and one other flavor. I sat down and the server brought my drink to the table. My meal arrived shortly afterwards. Everything looked delicious and after blessing the meal I got down to business. I enjoyed the creamy refried beans and the rice had a nice flavor. I enjoyed my chicken taco the best. The chicken was tender and seasoned well. The Al pastor was not as tender, but by no means was it tough. The beef taco was tasty. I loved the hibiscus tea which was flavorful and not overly sweet. The green salsa was perfect for me. I'm sure my better half would've enjoyed the heat that the red salsa offered! Was told to wake up early in the morning and go grab menudo. This was my first time trying menudo and coming to this restaurant. Walking in, there's a little shop in the front and the restaurant is in the back. I'm definitely gonna go back and do some shopping there because I want to try some stuff there. I'm honestly not sure how long this place has been in the same shopping center as Kohl's and Ross, BUT LET ME TELL YOU -- THIS PLACE IS SUCH A HIDDEN GEM! I actually stumbled upon Changarro on Door Dash (basically a mix between GrubHub and UberEats if you're not familiar) and was immediately impressed. And it was delivery! So it was even that amazing after being delivered to me! Although they don't do Door Dash anymore (pour one out for the loss) this place is amazing. It's actually situated in the back of a Mexican grocer (complete with Mexican snacks, pan dulce, and authentic looking party fare) but if you walk all the way to the back the space opens up into the restaurant with a good number of chairs. The menu is about a page, but the offerings are legit. They even have Mexican soda in the refrigerator to the right of the ordering counter (not twist off I quickly learned as I struggled and eventually took the bottle home with me). The only think I thought was a bit odd was that you ordered, and then waited, and then paid? They made your food and then you paid for it. Now, I'm not someone who takes advantage of people, but I feel like I could've easily forgot. And what if it ended up being more money than I had, and the food was already made? I had the tacos al pastor, and the tostado de ceviche (shrimp). The tacos came with red and green salsa, but didn't even need anything else. The tostado was as big as my face and amazingly crunchy. This will be a short review. All you need to know is that this place has very mediocre food and is extremely overpriced. I will give it props for being the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Bensalem, but unfortunately being authentic alone doesn't save this place. It's actually really disappointing to be served some of the most forgettable Mexican food I've had at a Mexican run business. I've had better Mexican food from American and Cuban run places. That alone tells you that there is a problem. Even now it's hard to remember specifics about my meal. I had chicken mole; the chicken was a bit too dry but the sauce was okay. The beans and rice were forgettable. My fiance got the chile relleno and couldn't even finish it, he claimed it did not taste great and fell apart as soon as he tried to eat it. This place is amazing! I was running an errand at Staples when I noticed this little place. I stopped in and was browsing the Mexican grocery in the front when I noticed that there was a little dining area in the back. I picked up some plantain and spicy chips from the grocery and told myself I'd return to try the food. So I did, on a Thursday evening. We may have been the only ones there who weren't Mexican, but I think that only verifies the authenticity of the food. The young man at the counter was super friendly and helpful when he took our orders and when he brought the food out to our table. My cheese enchiladas verde were out of this world. I put some jalapeños on them, but they did have a little spice all their own. They also came with rice and refried beans, as well as some lime wedges and a little piece of cheese. Honestly, it was an enchilada plate fit for a king. My date was so blown away by his authentic quesadilla, he instantly said that this place is his new favorite Mexican spot. They've got a great array of hot sauces available on the back counter too, what more could you ask more? The only thing that could make it any better is if they served beer. Here is the thing.... this place, when you first walk in, you may think you are in the wrong place because the front of the restaurant is a Grocery store.... it is typical of many real Mexican (or Latino eateries) places that do both: Sell cooked food and have a grocery store. When you make your way passed the store part, in the back, is the restaurant. 1) Very clean and very well lit. 2) You go up to the back counter order your food and and drink and then go back to your seat and wait for it. 3) Food was delicious and affordable. 4) TV or Music jut-box can be a bit loud but don't let that discourage you from enjoying your meal. El Changarro ( "small shop") in Mexican Spanish slang, is exactly that - a small grocery/variety store with a Mexican Guatamaltecan kitchen and dining room in the rear. Like most of the other Latina cocinas in and around Bucks County, it caters to the growing population from south of that border so much in the news lately. (Have to say from observation that there are many more good cooks and entrepreneurs entering the USA, than undesirables. I guess the wall is to limit the number of Mexican restaurants setting up businesses around the country.) Please excuse the editorial. So, I was there for a weekend dinner recently having learned about the joint on Yelp. As directed, I walked through the store to the dining area in back. It was pretty big. About a dozen tables nicely spaced, colorful mural on the walls and wood carved people with amusing faces and traditional costume all around. The gestalt back there was definitely a little reality altering. It almost became a Mexican town square. Food was ordered at the kitchen window and delivered to the table. My order was taken by a bilingual young guy. It was prepared by three women who were not. The menu had most of the usual suspects and house made bebidas and liquidas frescas. I went with an al pastor quesadilla rather than three tacos, to increase the contents and reduce the amount of tortilla. It was served about 10 minutes later. It was plump from all the spicy roast pork, beans, lettuce, tomato, pineapple and queso. It required knife and fork to avoid spillage. Liked it a lot. Plenty of flavor and texture. Moist, too. I spread red salsa on top to ensure adequate burn. Filled me completely and left a pleasant belch at the finish. Ahh. Right down Street Road from Parx Casino, in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Worth a trip. read more

This is such a unique spot with a grocery at the entrance where you can find Mexican candy and snacks! The taqueria is in the back and is super picturesque. Now for the food: Tacos were definitely above average! I've tried many, many taco joints and this was easily a top 3 for me. I only had the shredded chicken (tinga) and steak (bistec) Taco and am excited to come back and try more of the menu. It is exactly the experience that you would expect if you ate at any Mexican mom's house - Great food and a straightforward attitude that will make you clean your plate! I first came across El Changarro on Yelp and hesitated to even go inside because it looked like a bodega, so my brain was not registering where they were cooking. Thankfully, I finally ventured in, and like the super resourceful people that Mexicans are, they built a genius money maker with a bodega up front (includes a Western union, clothing store and party store) AND a cute restaurant tucked into the back. The hubby and I walked in, read the specials of the day and admired the beautiful murals on the walls before ordering. I decided I had never had Sopes so I tried a set of three with Chorizo. "Can I mix and match toppings?" - Me Mexican Mom/Cook - "Hell no." Ok, so not exactly how the conversation went, but her face and lifted eyebrow said hell no. So I got all three topped with Chorizo. They came out and looked like a Tostada mixed with a pupusa in the picture (in case that is still not helpful, like a thick tortilla). It was topped with lots of mildly spicy chorizo, black beans, lettuce, and white sauce. I could seriously eat one of these for the rest of my life, they were so good! Three pieces were $7.50 and filling. As usual, I asked hubby to let me taste his chicken tinga burrito, equally as good. Loaded with layers of beans, sauce, rice, lettuce and wrapped in what looked like a homemade tortilla. It was a big burrito as well, easily fill up on half, and at a great price at $7.50 The Chicken Tinga was a bit spicy and adding the red sauce to it, gave it a nice smoky kick, that you regretted a minute later. We tried the tamarindo water, which was sweet, but not overly sweet and came in a GIANT cup, so make sure to only order one at first. A great deal for only $1.50. Overall, I will definitely be returning many, many times. I was in between a 4.5 star rating, more because I wish the menu had more offerings and I wouldn't mind a little more customer service from the ladies behind the counter if you ask for a fork or a drink. I ate there twice so far. First time I had a burrito, very large and filling. You eat it like they do in Mexico as a sandwich with your hands. It does not come with any sides. Second visit I had the chicken mole. It was great. Very large dish with 1/4 chicken, rice, refried bean, salad and lots of hot tortillas on the side. Very fresh, filling and inexpensive to boot. So if you are in the mood for real Mexican food (not Taco Bell) and you enjoy quality, don't mind a little bit of a sparse atmosphere and want to be totally and completely satiated by a super nice family, this place is awesome!!!
