Exceptional Catalan food in the heart of Madrid!…read more We tried the snails on the tin which were absolutely delicious, and so also where the calçots and the butifarra. Great choice if you are in the area

This place was my go-to place when I lived in Madrid. The downtown location (C/ Señores de Luzon) was walking distance from home (I lived at Plaza del Cordon), prices were very fair, and quality was really great. This is a great place for tourists to Madrid who may not have the time or opportunity to get over to Barcelona/Catalonia. Can Punyetes offers a nice variety of primarily Catalan specialties at very reasonable prices. They grill most of the food (including the bread for the pan tumaca) over a real wood fire. I usually went with grilled quail, but everything was always good. They have a lot of great wine options, and you can try your hand at drinking from a porron. The best option on the dessert menu, in my opinion) was always the pastel de castanyas (a chocolate and chestnut pie), though of course they also serve an excellent crema catalana (like a crème brulee). If ever I return to Madrid, Can Punyetes will be my first stop.

When I found out I was coming to Madrid I had to book a table. First things first, my suggestion is book way in advance. This place fills up fast. My friend and I waited too long and the only seating we could get was at 11:15 PM. No big deal though there's plenty of places you can get a light snack in the surrounding area while exploring the city. Walking in, the architecture immediately hits you. Low ceilings, gorgeous old brick, tight dining rooms, it really feels like you stepped back in time. The whole atmosphere is elevated without being stiff. Staff was super friendly and made the experience feel smooth from start to finish. There's also apprently a really nice wine cellar at the bottom I overheard other patrons bragging about. Food wise, I will keep it real, it was good, just not my favorite meal in Madrid. The sangria was solid, definitely one of my highlights. The croquettes were fire. Crispy, creamy, exactly what you want. My friend's seafood casserole was actually really good too, I lowkey wish I went that route. Now the misses. The sautéed vegetables with Iberian ham didn't do it for me. The veggies needed seasoning bad, and the ham leaned a little too salty, so together it just felt off. The suckling pig, the signature dish, was good, but I was not blown away. If I find myself returning here, I would explore other options. After dinner, there was a little show and they let you keep a souvenir menu, which was a nice touch and made the night feel more memorable. Overall I had a solid 3.5 star experience rounded up to 4. Sobrino de Botín is history, it is iconic, and it is worth saying you have been. Just do not expect it to be the best meal of your trip. Hit Botín, soak it in, then go explore the rest of Madrid's food scene, because that is where things really start to shine.

The restaurant itself has a lot of character, dark woods and brick. The place is known for its suckling roasted pig and lamb. We also ordered this soup that was being brought to other tables. History aside, the food was underwhelming. It's the type of place you try once when visiting Madrid.

Best pulpo and grilled calamari I have ever eaten anywhere in the world and that says a lot because…read moreI have eaten a lot of pulpo and in many different countries. We were wandering around the area doing touristy things and wanted to get my hubs a snack since he had not yet eaten all day. After being ignored at a few places on Calle Mayor, he found this spot and we ventured in. The place looked small but lively, and we saw some steps and figured there was a dining area downstairs. Before we could decide as a group if we wanted to go in, we were quickly greeted and welcomed by the manager/owner. What a welcoming place in comparison to the other establishments that had snubbed us Americans. The stairs led to a larger dining room and it was filled with locals which was very telling of the authenticity. The waiter shared with us the specials for the day and we were sold. They all sounded amazing, so the intended snack turned into a full on meal. Bill was $100+ but no regrets. Check this place out. It is fantastic. The worst part is I will now be craving the delicious flavors from half way around the world. And I will most definitely order the dish that all the locals seemed to be ordering. We weren't sure what it was but it looked like a tenderized flattened meat with cheese that was deep fried to a golden crisp. Had we not already ordered our food and filled our stomachs before seeing that, we likely would have ordered one for our table, too. So you probably should.

The natural cider was exceptional, and like almost no other cider I've had before. Super tangy with fresh fermentation. The rice pudding was also excellent. Of their specialties, it would've been nice to have either the Madrid tripe _or_ the Asturian bean stew, but they use the same tomato sauce base, chorizo, and black pudding for both of them, so they were somewhat repetitive. That said, the beans and tripe were incredibly melt-in-your-mouth tender, which was really nice. Potato omelet and chorizo slices were both relatively standard.

The callos a la madrileña (aka tripas) was exactly what I was hoping for - tender honeycomb tripe in a paprika-rich, brick-red sauce with chunks of morcilla and chorizo you sop up with crusty bread. The tortilla came out thick and custardy in the middle, all potatoes and eggs, the classic bar version you want with a short pour of vermut, which we also ordered and drank with gusto. The spot is upstairs and on the small side so if you're a larger party you'll be a tight squeeze. They do have an English menu. We ordered some broad beans with Jambon, garlic shrimps and seafood paella. All of it was delicious and unique. We did a two person portion of the paella for three people and it was perfect. We were all full without being stuffed. I think for paella it is a minimum of two peoples portions per order but the folks next to us was only two people and their plates were massive so plan accordingly. The seafood in the paella was fresh and huge portions. The shrimp still had the shell on so it was slightly messy peeling it. Every bite was flavorful. This was my first time eating broad beans cooked this way. It was slightly briney but not salty at all. The texture is what you expect of beans, firm and not mushy like peas. The garlic shrimp was good. The portion was a good size. The texture of the shrimp was good too. Perfectly cooked. It wasn't as garlicky like some of the other places I've tried it but it was still delicious.
