This is my favorite place to eat in La Porte. It's located within a few feet of the hotel I stay at when I am in town. The employees are always nice and the food is pretty good. It's your run of the mill Mexican restaurant. Nothing fancy and everything does taste the same as your typical Mexican joint. I look forward to eating here when I am in town because I know that my day is over and I can relax with a cold beer and a nice hot dinner. read more

I have eaten here probably 10 times. The food is consistently good and the portions are large. However the chips and salsa are okay and the service is usually terrible. I always joke to my husband that the servers also cook the food and wash the dishes because they are always in the back, and if they forget the tortillas for your fajitas...oh well, just eat them without. Or if you need a fork or a napkin, too bad. Visiting from Southern California which is basically a suburb of Mexico so we know Mexican food. First, the staff is really good. Very friendly and attentive. The salsa is good but chips are store-bought. Margaritas are so-so but I would do again. Cheese enchiladas are marginal and chicken quesadilla is good. Taco wasn't bad but shell was store-bought. The food was good and my view of it has nothing to do with the yummy pitcher of Margarita we drank! We had the cheese dip, Taco De Asada with beans and rice and mini chimi's. All was great. Salsa was bland. I liked the rice a lot. The steak taco and cheese dip was better than usual but the rest of it was very typical of an 'Ameri-Mex' joint. I knew there wasn't any female employees working that night cause the bathroom was a gross mess. Our server wasn't as interested in taking care of us as he was hanging out with the other do nothing servers. Between his broken English and my poor Spanish, there was a big communications barrier but it all worked out. They do have a great view of the lake but only if you sit in the front ( non-smoking area). I went back again and got carry out on a late work night. Just got a couple taco salads. Of course they gave us the chips and salsa too. They just wrapped the salads in flimsy foil and they didn't drain the beef and lettuce well so I had a juicy mess in the bottom of the to go bag. Also, I should of asked them for styrofoam plates. Luckily, my hotel had some in their breakfast area as well as salt and pepper cause the taco salads was bland! We have ate here since the day it opened years ago. It's been great but then in early 2012 the service became very bad. Visit after visit we got poor service We stopped going because of it. Then we wanted to try again after so many months. It was back to its old self. We talked to one of the waiters and he told us they had fired some of the staff. The order. Mango margarita, steak burrito three tacos and free chips. Chips tasted like bagged chips you buy at jewel. All plates including the burrito were pre made and reheated. Steak was chewy and some pieces were still frozen. You couldn't touch the plates for about 10 minutes since they were so hot. The burrito was wrapped by a 10 year old boy it seemed. Horrible place!!!!! Food wasn't hot. Several members of my family became ill after dining here. The restaurant is filthy and in disrepair. The staff is rude to put it mildly. We stayed at the hotel next door and went here because it was easy to access. Wish we would have driven the 2 miles to a better place. Won't EVER go here again. read more

I've been to a lot of mexican restaurants but this is one of the most authentic tasting that i've ever been to in this area! I ordered the "El Bracero Special" and it was delicous! I also went on a wednesday when they had a 1.99 margarita special and it was really good and tart. I also enjoyed the homemade salsa with extra cilantro! mmm! The food was terrible. They are cheep with the amounts but like to charge extra. I ordered the stuffed pepper with cheese lunch special with beans and avocado and a choice of taco. I went with steak they charge you a dollar more for steak and the taco was full of lettuce three strands of steak. The pepper was mushy they drowned the plate with runny beans. I love going to El Bracero restaurant here in La Porte IN. The food is always hot and brought out on a hot plate and always plenty of it. I always take home leftovers and my husband and I get 2 full meals for the price of one. In my opinion it is a great value for the money and fantastic food. I love that when you first get there they give you plenty of warm fresh chips and salsa. They make the salsa home made and I can tell because it varies a little here and there but it is always wonderful. I love chips and salsa. I try to order different items, but I do have a couple favorites and so does my husband. He loves the Derango and I made the mistake once and ordered their special meal and they brought me 3 plates of food! My husband laughed at me for the next couple times we went asking if I was doing that again. Possibly the best Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is fresh, authentic, and reasonably priced. Most of the dishes are made from scratch and they use real cheeses. It was my first time passing through LaPorte and I was hungry. El Bracero was near the hotel so I thought I would give it a try. The decor is a bit dated and the service is okay but the food is pretty good. The traditional Mexican chips are not served warm but the salsa has a nice mix of spicy but not too spicy. The menu is a little tricky as it shows several pictures of combination platters. The caption says things like "Combination #13", but in reality there are no set combination platters. I got a stuffed burrito & enchelada combination. My only complaignt was that I was eating alone and when I eat alone I like to eat and then run. After I finished my meal I had to wait a good 10 minutes before they brought my bill. It is a little annoyance. Overall, if I find myself in LaPorte again, I would go back. read more
