This hill is located in the the oldest part of Zurich (near Schipfe). It was once a Celtic…read moresettlement and then it became a Roman fort. The stone wall of the fort is what you see today. There's more history there that is still being uncovered. Some items found around the Lindenhof date back to the 1st century BC. Today, it's a large park with incredible views of Zurich and the Limmat River. We saw groups of people playing boules in the grassy area on a Sunday, as well as people playing chess. There's a fountain in the middle of the square that pays homage to Hedwig's women who wore battle gear to defend the city during the seige of Zurich in 1292. It's worth seeking out as it can be quite peaceful up there even though it's a tourist hot spot. The walk up the somewhat steep pathway and steps to get there from the city center is worth it. I've read that there is an elevator for those with mobility issues, but I didn't see one. There are benches as well as places to sit along the wall. It's shady and breezy up there. A great place to relax and enjoy the view.

We stayed at a hotel on the other side of the river and walked across a lovely bridge to get here. You start at the bottom of the hill where there is a one lane road. While there are cars (or were, when we visited), mostly there are pedestrians and bicyclists. The lane is full of little shops and restaurants all vying for your attention and money. Eventually you come to a wide and tall (long) staircase going up. At the top is what is considered Lindenhof Hill, a quaint park with gorgeous views across the river and towards Lake Zurich. There is a fountain and old pumping station, as well as some Roman artifacts. It's a nice park to just sit and take in the views, or play a game of giant chess/checkers. The streets are all narrow in this area, but once you leave the hill, you need to find Thermengasse. It is a covered pedestrian walkway with grating for a walkway. Underneath the grating is an exposed archeological dig of a Roman heating system. There is signage throughout the passageway telling you all about it. As night began to fall, we made our way around the area, just taking everything all in. We ended up by the Fraumuenster church and walked across the Muenster bridge towards the Niederdorf area. If we had had more time, we would have explored the area more, but we were happy with the highlights we did see. It was a nice little introduction to the city. 78/2025

The Badi Walchwil is on the southern outskirts of the town on the Artherstrasse coastal road. This is another of the very attractive lake swimming areas found all over Switzerland and is popular with both visitors and locals. There is a swimming area for non-swimmers, grassed areas with shade suitable for both sunbathing and picnics and a restaurant. Facilities provided include showers and toilets. The beach is located at the southern end of Walchwil It is popular gathering place for families, young people and for the local and foreign population. I enjoyed fine a Rocky Patel cigar here at the badi after a long hard day of work.

This old wooden bridge crossing over the Reuss River may be smaller than the more popular Chapel…read moreBridge, but it definitely has more personality. It's the one with the triangular-shaped Kaspar Meglinger "Dance of Death" paintings. I'm guessing that they've been restored over the years. They actually looked well-preserved considering they've been exposed to the elements under the trusses of the bridge since the mid-17th century. The skeletal death guy in all the paintings is kind of creepy. Oh, and there is a Grim Reaper too. Can you imagine walking over this bridge at night while looking at all those spider-webbed paintings? We decided to take this route on the way to visiting the towers along the Musegg Wall that once fortified the city. It also happens to be the site of the hydroelectric plant and the beaver ramp. I'm not sure if beavers actually use it, but it's there in case they need to pass over the rough downstream water to get to Lake Lucerne. It's all explained with descriptive informational markers. That whole area is kind of cool. It was interesting to see even though half the bridge was under construction at the time we were there (Sept 2025). You can still see the paintings above the scaffolding. It's definitely worthy of a cross over at some point during your stay in Lucerne.

It's the fairytale Swiss village that borders Germany along the High Rhine River near Lake…read moreConstance. I found the Old Town to be very pedestrian friendly since it's a car-free zone. It truly allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the intricately painted half-timbered buildings in Rathaus Square along with a nice stroll along the river. It's especially a relaxing place to visit on a sunny day. You'll see a mix of tourists and locals enjoying the weather. The square is lined with cafés and shops. It's a great place for lunch or dinner before or after visiting the nearby Rhine Falls and/or Hohenklingen Castle. We enjoyed seeing some of the historical landmarks. The Witch Tower was built for defense, but then it became a prison. It was also used during the witch trials. The last execution of an accused witch here was in 1667. How creepy is that? It's like Switzerland's Salem. We just happened to see it after walking through the Untertor gate on our way to the river. But honestly, the main attraction here is the Rathaus Square. It was so cool just to experience a traditional local meal while looking up at the clock tower in the middle of Old Town. It was a beautiful day!

This is another beautiful Swiss town that deserves a visit. It's located in the canton of the same…read morename. It is here where you can take the railway to Wasserauren for that gondola ride up to the restaurant in the cliff of Ebenalp. It's also a great starting point for anyone wanting to make the journey up to Mount Säntis via the gondola from Schwägalp. It's known mostly for the dairy farming & production of Appenzeller cheese. Although, we thought that the local brewery and their famous Quöllfrisch beer was equally as wonderful. There is a nice car park that is directly across the street from Appenzeller Bier. Just start at the brewery and walk your way up through the city center. You'll discover other things along the way such as unique woodworks, cows decorated in flowers (during the seasonal cow parades), and beautifully painted Swiss architecture. There's folk dancing and yodeling festivities throughout the year celebrating their love of tradition. We simply enjoyed taking in the rural view of the rolling green hills leading up to the mountains. It was a great visit!

It's the square or promenade in front of Lake Zurich near the dock. This is where you can take a…read morescenic boat tour of the lake. It's also a great place to walk and soak in the views of it. My favorite part of the experience was watching the swans and ducks on what looks like an old boat ramp. They look so majestic while sunbathing after a swim. There's a sculpture on the terrace of Ganymede in a scene described as "The Abduction to Olympus" in Greek mythology. It was sculpted by Hermann Hubacher in 1952. The eagle in the sculpture represents Zeus. I thought it looked more elegant when viewing it from below the terrace. This is also where you can find the farmers market on Tuesday & Friday as well as a flea market on Saturday. Although, I believe they may have recently moved to the Münsterhof (Oct 2025) due to construction in the area. Check the website just to be sure. We walked down Bahnhofstrasse to get here. You can also take Fraumünsterstrasse to get here as well depending on where you are in the city. Take that short or long boat excursion if you have the time so that you can see all the sights on Lake Zurich. It's all worth it.
