We were there for over 2 hours, and if you're really into history, plan to be there for longer. The building and collection is expansive. There are audio guides available in English. Every item has a descriptive plaque, but not every plaque is in English (which personally I was OK with just looking.l because every room has an audio file in English so I got the gist. Strange it felt like we were the only ones here, there weren't even security guards. We had the whole Museum to ourselves, and I'm not quite sure where we were walking, but we didn't see much that was uniquely German. We went through many galleries with a mix of modern art & antiquities. It was disappointing that the Cafe & Restaurant were closed on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The National Museum really looks like a Fortress. King Maximilian II of Bavaria founded the museum in 1855 to celebrate Bavarian history & the Wittelsbach dynasty. The museum moved to this grand palace-like home on Prinzregentenstrabe in 1900. It was designed by architect Gabriel Seidl in a striking blend of Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic revival. The Schatzhaus an der Eisbachwelle is one of the largest museums in Germany. It presents outstanding art from late antiquity to Art Nouveau and tells in a unique way European cultural history in Bavaria. With the successive renewal of its exhibition collections and exciting special exhibitions, it builds bridges between the past and the present.

However; I want to describe a very special program they sponsored many years ago, which has had a wonderful impact on my life. Way back in late 1994 - during the internet's Stone Age - I was at a card store (remember those?). There was a little sign saying something to the effect that if anyone was interested in having a penfriend in another country, they should send their age & interests and the country where they'd like to have a penfriend. Apparently that information had also been provided to institutes in many countries. I sent a letter and said I'd like to have a German (female) penfriend. Meanwhile; a woman my age who lives about 1 1/2 hours from Munich had attended occasional events at Amerikahaus, and they were one of the institutes participating in that program. A few weeks later, I received a letter from Edith - and we've been very close friends ever since. I've visited her & her family four times and they've visited us three times. Edith & I have very frequent e-mail contact, and I'm also close to her two children (they live in other cities and we also visit them whenever we're in Germany). My life has been impacted significantly by having such a wonderful friend, and I'll always be grateful to Amerikahaus for facilitating this friendship.

I spent most of my time in the Markus Lüpertz exhibit. This German artist has some interesting pieces that had me thinking Andy Warhol meets Jackson Pollock meets Vincent Van Gogh. Colors, repetitive designs, interesting patterns. Several large and open galleries made the collections easy to view and enjoy. Well worth my time here today. As a history major and frequent visitor at many ethnographical museums I was thoroughly impressed by MFK. Their collection is rich for a museum of it's size. It's definitely not the largest well known museum in the world, but they have a variety of items across Oceania, Africa, South America, North America, and Asia. What truly sets apart MFK from every other museum of its genre, and believe me I've been to too many, is their approach in displaying their collection in contrast to modern content. The museum has on display contemporary pieces of art and photography next to/with the ancient artifacts. In most cases the artists of the contemporary works are either from the region of the world that the ethnoligical objects are from or are descendents from those regions. This is soooooo UNIQUE. This is the main reason I'm giving this museum 5 stars because the concept of fusing the past and the present through art/artifacts that represent culture in an ethnological museum is quite revolutionary. Although the museum is in it's beginning stages of doing more work like this, it is quite inspiring to see that MFK truly desires to see not only different cultures but also the different eras come together to give their visitors a very wholistic glimpse at who we were/are as both separate and collective human societies. They also have a very nice cafe in their lobby for food and drinks. The price is pretty cheap for the general admission, especially compared to a lot of other European museums. Their exhibitions like the Buddha room are very well laid out in terms of colors, lighting, and content. Not all the rooms have English descriptions yet, hopefully they will have those in place soon. But overall very progressive and a recommended visit while you're in Munich!!

The organization of the collection is somewhat confusing - at least to me: there is e.g. a large collection of items from Oceania that ranges from the Philippines to New Zealand, and sometimes, the links between such different cultures seems forced. It is also a mystery to me why part of the collection of e.g. Islam culture or Africa is in one part of the building and an other is downstairs in another part of the building. In the end, it gives a messy impression which belies the richness of the collection. There are also some areas that they have to something about: they have e.g. some beautiful Buddhas from India, Myanmar and Thailand, but there is so little of it that it gets lost in the whole. I can only advise the people in charge to go and have a look at the museum of Asian cultures in Singapore which - with far less artifacts - leaves a better impression and gives far more background information.
