We were lucky enough to visit the Eibsee in 1992, on an R&R break from a Mid-East posting. The lake itself was glorious, with crystal clear water to great depth. Surrounded by fabulous forest, and with lovely walking paths all round. There was vestigial snow on the ground. The hotel and restaurant patio overlooking the lake were super places to became acquainted with Weiswurst and Spaten beer Now in 2024 it sounds as if the peace is, alas, no more, but Eibsee will always be special for us. Emerald-colored lake is very enchanting. On a clear day, you will be able to enjoy looking at Zugspitze (the highest point in Germany) and other peaks with a gorgeous lakeview. The circle easy-hiking/biking trail is about 8km in length, so it'll take about two hours in leisurely-paced to walk around the lake. It's worth your time and effort. It has some hilly parts, but they are not too bad. We even saw some families with strollers. If you hike in the morning, you may not be able to see the mountains too clearly (fog, the sun behind the mountains, etc.). If you wait till the afternoon, you may be able to see them clearly, but you'll risk some clouds moving in as it was the case for us. Mountain weather is very unpredictable for sure. Unfortunately, it was a little too early to enjoy colorful foliage for us, but you can see the beginning of the change. It was a very nice hike around this enchanting lake. Highly recommended if you are in the area and be able to take some time to enjoy it. If you drive to this location, parking lot will cost you about $6 (2 hours) or more depending on how much time you spend. I believe all-day parking was about $12, but I just can't remember exactly. read more

A beautiful retreat, get there early for a boat rental of all shapes and sizes. We rented a paddle boat for 4 for 1 hour, very reasonably priced. There are kayaks and paddle boards, andboats with a mini water slide. The lake has many islands To stop at, pull up to, dock if you can. We stopped at an island for a brief swim. The water is crystal clear in so many places and deep and dark in others. The shoreline is riddled with beaches, never lacking for a spot To stretch out. Bathing and tanning comes in all shapes and sizes... and suits. We climbed waterfalls, drank from the falls, and hiked the spanse around. There are bike trails, mounds, downed trees. You won't be bored! View the Top of the Zugspitz from the base and enjoy the entire day. Ice cream and food available! read more

A beautiful emerald lake at the base of the Zugspitze. I was in love the minute I saw it from up above and as we got down to the lake I was amazed at the natural beauty of this lake. We did the 90 min walk around the lake and I would highly recommend you do it. The walk winds around most of the lake and you get some amazing scenery along the way and plenty of places to take post card pictures and post them onto Yelp like I did. There are many beautiful lakes in Bavaria and this is simply stunning and probably my favourite by far. It was packed when we went there so if you plan to spend a day there in the summer months get there early before everyone arrives. A must visit if you are a local or a tourist to Bavaria. You truly get an appreciation for the amazing natural beauty in this place. Despite the amount of visitors it's amazing how well this place has been preserved for all to enjoy. read more
