Ainsi en 1525 une chapelle fut reconstruite, à côté une tour est construite (elle sera rabaissée en 1563); après le saccage du bâtiment par les Huguenots, il a été décidé de la construire en pierre. La construction commence en 1575 pour se terminer en 1610. Lors de la Révolution, l'église devient un temple de la raison. Aussi l'église est saccagé pendant cette période de l'histoire française. Ainsi en 1830 l'église, ainsi que sa tour, a dû être restaurée une première fois. Pendant cette rénovation, un projet d'aggrandissement du chœur a été proposé mais il n'a pas été réalisé. Lors des bombardements de septembre 1944 de la ville par l'aviation britannique, l'église reste miraculeusement debout, sans être épargnée : une bombe détruit un tiers de la nef. Commencés en 1951, les travaux sont achevés en 1957 après la mort d'Auguste Perret par des architectes de son atelier. A l'intérieur de l'église, le béton est éclairé par 6500 verres colorés. Les couleurs varient en fonction de l'orientation. Dédiée à la mémoire des victimes des bombardements, edifice emblématique de la reconstruction en Europe, l'église Saint-Joseph s'impose comme l'un des chefs-d'oeuvres architecturaux du XXème siècle.

Admission is free althogh information about guided routers can be found at the tourist office of Bayeaux. There is a crypt to see. As Normady was miracously spared during World War II bombings, the church and the town have been well preserved. Outside of the cathedrale part of an ancient Roman wall can be seen. There is also the Libery tree planted in 1797 as a symbol of the French Revolution ideals. The tree still stands. Allow at least an hour inside then explore the medieval town and history of Bayeaux.

This big cathedral was heavily damaged during WW2 as the town is located not far from the strategic port of Le Havre. Any stained glass that is here is only here now because it was removed for safekeeping from bombing and put back after the war. Clear glass is seen at many of the top levels as it was too difficult to get to these areas to preserve the historic stained glass. Monet made several paintings of the cathedral also.
