The exterior was beautiful of course. In front of the basilica, there is a great viewpoint of Paris. I had not seen the side entrance, but the front entrance was pretty discreet. Walking up through Montmartre is good exercise in its own right, with the staircases near the top providing a wonderfully direct final approach as the white basilica rises above you. The surrounding neighborhood is beyond charming, and reaching the summit feels like a fitting culmination of exploring one of the city's most distinctive quarters. Once there, the sweeping view across Paris is spectacular, particularly from the broad steps beneath the basilica. The Romano-Byzantine architecture is striking up close, while the enormous gold mosaic inside gives you another reason to step away from the panorama and enter the church. Few places capture Paris quite so completely: beautiful architecture, a lively neighborhood, and that extraordinary city unfolding beneath you.

Seeing other reviews, realized I never wrote one for here!…read more My visit was a few years ago though I recall it vividly--after perusing the nearby Marché aux Fleurs de Paris flower market and then the Conciergerie also on Île de la Cité, I arrived to the line outside the entrance to this church on Bd du Palais, with about 30-40 people ahead of me, about a few minutes before noon. Something to note, they are very strict on entry times here, due to limited capacity, and if you miss you time slot, they'll make you wait until the next available time. I learned this the hard way, not realizing some of the visitors in front of me were there for the next time slot after mine, so when they finished letting people in, my time slot was complete and they didn't let anyone else in until the next scheduled time with available capacity. So I ended up waiting an extra 30 minutes, and thankfully the 12:30 time slot had availability for me to enter. Once they scan your ticket, you're ushered into the Lower Chapel, which originally served as an everyday place of worship for lower level courtiers, servants and soldiers in the royal entourage. The vibe is dim and intimate, dedicated to the Virgin Mary with simpler stained glass windows, slender columns with painted ribbed vaults. The ceiling is colored an intense blue adorned with golden fleur-de-lys patterns (representing French royal heritage) and red columns with castle symbols (representing the Spanish heritage of Queen Blanche of Castile, mother of Louis IX). After about 10-15 minutes downstairs most visitors head upstairs to the Upper Chapel, which was a private chapel reserved for King Louis IX, his family, and honored guests, who accessed it directly via a gallery from the royal palace. This space is filled with soaring stained glass windows, each containing more than a thousand panels of glass, and depicting scenes from the Bible, from creation to the Passion of Christ. What an amazing space! The sunlight streaming through the vibrant colored glass was magical, it literally felt like seeing the room through rose-colored glasses. The only downside was the crowds, so if you have the chance I'd recommend getting an early or late time slot if you can.

The High Alter and Chancel area are incredibly beautiful. I have attached some photos of it, along with the Organ pipes above the Narthex. The Jesuit architects Étienne Martellange and François Derand, built the present building at the request of Louis XIII in the early seventeenth century. LOL What makes the church important is it's Baroque style, rather then the prevalent Gothic of the time. It's introduction changed Parisian religious architecture and is exquisite to see. On PBS Masterpiece Theater's Les Misérables, Cosette and Marius were married here. Sadly like Notre-Dame, Église Saint-Paul Saint-Louis du Marais was plundered during the French Revolution when many of its artworks were destroyed. Mass on Sunday is at 9:30 am, 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. https://www.spsl.fr/

That felt so good, and I felt so blessed and so much lighter afterwards. Best of all, It's a block away from the metro station, a few blocks from our hotel, and right across so many delicious restaurants, boulangerie and chocolates all in the heart of the fashion district, La Marais, Paris. Bonjour!

It's a bit of a metro ride from the center but worth the time. Entry is €10 which includes all the crypts and the choir. If you don't want to pay you can still enter the nave but you miss those most interesting things. So the church itself is absolutely gorgeous - known as the first truly Gothic building. The choir is stunning - just flooded with light and full of beautiful stained glass. I can only imagine how awed the medieval attendees were because it's still pretty impactful. The crypts & disambulatory are full of the graves of the French kings going back to the 400's, along with many other royal queens, children etc. There is lots of really interesting tomb art, showing how people looked and dressed. The archeological crypt is king of creepy - reminded me a bit of the catacombs. Definitely worth taking the time to see this gorgeous church!

The building is considered to be the first structure to employ all of the elements of Gothic architecture. The necropolis contains the tombs of the French Kings from nearly every king from the 19th to the 19th century. The Queens where crowned at Saint-Denis. I have historically documented lineage to several people in this Basilica which was why I visited. The cathedral is gorgeous. The Pass Sanitare was required to enter and everyone wore masks. There is a €9.50 charge to see the tombs.
