Was traveling from MN to FL and about 1/2 hour out of Effingham, the check engine light came on and AWD warning light came on. This also knocked out the cruise control with about 20 more hours of travel ahead of us. Anyone that has had vehicle issues while traveling understands how stressful that can be - especially when you are out of town and dependent on a service center you have no relationship with. It was about 10 am when we "randomly" found Effingham Auto on a Saturday morning. They closed at noon. Explaining my situation, they immediately took it in, performed the diagnosis and determined a couple sensors needed replacement. The gentleman explained how the sensors impacted the vehicle's system and said the codes were cleared and that I could chance to see if they came back on or they would be able to get the parts and complete in about an hour. On a Friday March 28 2025 . We were heading to Indiana when our SUV started shaking as we drove . We had heard a winding noise earlier but thought it was road noise Any way we called AAA and they were going to tow us to a repair shop that may or may not help on a Friday. We decided to call our selves one never answered , the other said what the hell its Friday and then I called Effingham Auto Repair . they asked if we could drive to them and they would take a look with no promises . We did they took us in quickly and with in minutes a price to fix. It was bad plugs and burnt coils, after that when they took it for test drive they determined the noise was rear wheel bearing . So, a hat from this place on my dads chair reminded me of them. YEARS ago... and I mean YEARS... it was in the 90s... my dad and I were doing a cross country trip to get me out to college from CA to PA. My car broke down, and honestly this many years later I don't remember what exactly it was but this place was beyond fair. They could have gouged us price wise and done anything. We were on the road and out of luck. But they didn't. They got our car fixed same day and we were back on the road again. And for a fair price and the service was amazing. Great, honest business. They repaired my rear differential that was slipping in my pickup truck. I called everywhere. Some places had a 2 week wait just to look at it. Here, they looked at it the same day and were completely done in 3 days. Which was mostly just waiting for the parts to get there. Their price was along the same lines as all the rest. Absolute garbage. Not only do they overcharge you, $40 for a 5min diagnosis but they mess up your vehicle even worse. Had to pay $180 for an alignment just to realize less than 3blocks down the road it was even worse. They couldn't fix it that week so I took it else where to be looked at and there were whole nut's missing from my front end suspension. I've had multiple issues with this company throughout the years and continued dealing with them out of familial loyaly and completely regret it. I had to bring my Mercedes to this shop due to having a mechanical issue while traveling. My car was towed there after they were closed. When I called the next morning, they were able to look at it and get it repaired the same day. Although the person who answered the phone at 7:30 am came across as gruff, they resolved my issue and were awesome to deal with. I would take my car back to this shop again. read more

Breaking down on the way to Christmas with the family is bad enough !!! But unfortunately effingham auto repair made it just a smidge worse. The people here are very nice and they looked at the car right away which was great but then they told us we needed a fuel pump which of course you can't get for an old BMW on a Saturday. We believed them (even though when we first got there we told them we thought the problem might be bad gas or water in the tank) and arranged a loaner car to come from the inlaws an hour away. We should have been in Detroit by 4pm but got there at 11:30 instead. So we are heading home on Monday and get a call from Effingham Auto Repair basically telling us that the car was out of gas !!!!!!!!! Are you kidding???? Somehow in the process of checking to see if we had bad gas (or water) you wouldn't have noticed there was NO gas?!?!?!? Obviously the gauge was off so it said there was gas. The gentleman apologized for not figuring it out sooner - no duh?!?? So since we are on the way home I ask if it's gonna be ready tonight and they say not til Tuesday morning. Ok well on top of everything else we still have to drive 1.5 hours back and forth to get it. Ok so on tuesday I call to find out what I owe them for the gas they put in and the fuel filter they replaced and I was SHOCKED to hear my total was 235 !!!!!!! They ended up only charging us $190 but still I feel like they made a mistake it was still too much. Don't go to Harper auto in effingham for you auto needs. Why you ask! Feel like we were lied to. Kept issues with truck from us. Now I have to put an engine in a truck we had for one week. Well now we have spoken to terry again and he told us he will not help because the truck was sold as is. I completely understand that but as a business owner and a stand up guy he should have at least offered to pay half as he had to have known about the issues with the truck. We spoke to two different mechanics and both said he should have disclosed the engine issue with us. Now my son has no truck because I can't afford $3000.00 on top of the $3489.00 I've spend trusting Terry. If you buy from here please make sure you have things checked out before you buy.
