They have very good teachers and offer courses in many languages such as Dutch, English, Italian, Chinese, etc. They also provide a certificate at the end of the course (which may be handy in case you need to take inburgerencursus). I took the Beginners I/II Intensive and Intermediate I Intensive, and I learned a lot. The teacher was amazing and really paid attention to pronunciation and grammar. Everything was explained clearly with plenty of in-class exercises. After the first 2 weeks, I was able to understand basic Dutch conversations and most signage. Now after both courses, I understand more and can have a basic conversation with Dutch people. The courses aren't cheap, but I think what makes UvA Talen stand out among all the language schools is the quality of their instructors. Gwynn was my "docent" and she was amazing! Just remember that the more you practice, the better you get! So the classes will give you a good foundation to build upon, and you should practice outside of class, watch Dutch TV, etc.

Your book is for someone who knows Dutch to learn ENGLISH. I do not understand for a language school that you just expect to teach in Dutch and have new students understand. It's an expensive course, I would like any focus to help students learn the language they are paying for. Also give students more than a week to get the book. It's so last minute, half our class was missing their books. When I asked the course materials early to avoid this, I was told the course materials were only a book. I later find out that it should be the book PLUS and online subscription. Just make your course and its requirements easier for the students to succeed. For something so expensive, there are 0 refunds the second class starts when you find the course recommended for beginners and have 0 clue what is happening in class because it's in basically in full Dutch. The course is marketed for absolute beginners.

I took their second level class. By the end of the first week, I had gained enough confidence and sentence patterns to be able to actually function for the first time in Dutch for simple things like buying in stores - I was impressed. Very refreshing and efficient way to learn a new language! I…read morehave never before seen such a method of learning. Basically you are doing self study with a tape recorder in a classroom with others while they learn other languages. There are several teachers who help you if you have questions, take your tests and listen in while you practice to offer pointers and assistance. This makes it so that you are learning at your own speed, whenever you want to! In my schedule it is impossible to go to a class every week at the same time, so I could never follow any courses. And private lessens are very expensive. This is a perfect solution! All the staff are very nice and the location is ideal, right on Koningsplein in the middle of amsterdam. I am currently learning French and just racing through the course. I only wish they were open more often! Highly recommended.

I found out about this School via a Dutch expat web site. The School had an event listed offering a…read morefree trial Dutch language class and one of the lucky attendees would win a free 8 week class as well. The school was located just under 15 minutes walking distance from my apartment, so decided to register and come check it out. Once you are at the building, go thru the lobby area to a common room towards the back, sign in and grab some coffee or tea as well as nibble on the cookies they've set out and basically mingle with the other folks who have come along for the free trial class as well. Btw, the location of the introductory class is actually a local college and they are pretty prompt because once 6:45pm rolled around, we got divided into groups of 12 and went off with individual teachers to a classroom located on the 3rd floor of the school building. Our teacher was the lovely and enthusiastic Veerle, and I really enjoyed her teaching style as well as the lesson and the multiple opportunities to practice my Dutch language skills with the other folks in my free trial class. Veerle had an easy-breezy style that made it fun and inspired me enough that the next morning I downloaded Duolingo, an app I had been meaning to a download for a while but hadn't done so yet. After about an hour and 15 minutes of our lesson, we made our way down back to the lobby area and the winner of the free class was announced (wasn't me!! :-) and it was all really very well planned and informative. The location of their actual classes is also just down the street, but they use the school building for these events as it's got more space. I need to look at their brochure and website to see if the timing of the language classes will work for me, (and if I do enroll, will come back and update my Yelp review) however can absolutely recommend coming for the free trial class they offer. My instructor, Christiaan, was highly qualified; he had a Master's degree. He used a variety of techniques to learn Dutch--we discussed topics, we had to present one side of a debate, and we had to draw/describe our house floor plan, among other methods. It was stimulating and the instructor was very enthusiastic. They also provide field trip opportunities and social gatherings to practice your Dutch. The program/experience was great and really helped me achieve my goal.

The group is small 8 people. The class is divided in 2 x 3 hour each session. The morning sessions were with Wessel, he is the founder of the school. And second half was with Jorgen. I enjoyed non-conventional flow of the class with Wessel. He developed his own technique, video and print materials. My second teacher Jorgen, lacked passion and confidence. I gave it 4 days and unfortunately had to skip my last class due to the issues at work. Nonetheless, yesterday I spoke Dutch in the restaurant and had a delightful experince.

I've taken many language classes in many languages before (Spanish, Arabic, Chinese) and I can say The School For Dutch is unique and engaging. Wessel, the owner and main instructor, is fantastic. He has a methods that are innovative and unique. Moreso, neither he nor the second instructor were intimidating. I wasn't scared to answer incorrectly. The environment is fantastic. I did the week long level 1 survival intensive course. It was really fun day to day, the other two students in the class were great, and they keep tea, coffee, and biscuits on hand throughout the day. Don't worry, there's a lunch break too so you get a little break with the other students. Ik heb kapsalon gegeten! As a bonus, his friend runs a tiny second hand bookshop there in the early evenings (in case you want some Dutch children's books for practice).

Ever since I was 18, I have spend time at the university for bachelor degree, master degree and continuing education. The university offers many studies. It is impossible to give an advise on the quality of education. However, for my field (economics) the VU seems more innovative than UVA (the other university in town). Tip: 1. To get there, take either the train to railway station Amsterdam Zuid or tram 5 or do like most students e.g. cycle. Around the building bicycles are parked, which clearly shows the preferred mode of transport. 2. Inside the VU, it can be confusing to move around. For example, the IT department is in a separate building, there is no reception (at least I could find none), the buildings are huge and there is even activitiy underground. You will find most students are very helpful. Make sure you know which building and room you need to go to and allow enough time to move to other buildings. 3. There is no free wifi for visitors. If you want wifi, ask if your host at the university can arrange this
