The cafe / restaurant when we went on a wet Tuesday in early January was quiet, perhaps unsurprisingly. We were allowed to drink our tea & read magazines in peace while our little'un wandered around saying hello to the very friendly staff. Great views over the fields & of the sky even on a grey day made it feel very calm. The shop / bakery / butcher looked very tempting, with an interest & tasty lookong range of interesting local / organic / whole food but as visitors to the area there didn't see much point in stocking up so I can't say more than that. In addition, of particular interest to me, its an Eco building with grey water toilets, turf roof etc. That alone merits a look, no? Worth making the effort to visit & support this place - it deserves to do well.

We spoke to the baker and he told us it was all part of the same business, the bakers and the cheese shop and the bakery had outgrown the building and was soon to be moving a mile or two up the road. Anyhow, we walked through the front door and were amazed at the wonderful display of freshly baked breads available to buy. From super open textured, crunchy baguettes to heavy sourdough and super soft farmhouse loaves, stilton and walnut bread, oily foccaccia and on and on. There was also a small selection of sweets such as really nutty brownies, pain au chocolat and danish. Everything looked so good, it took us forever to narrow down our choices. We ended up buying four loaves of bread and two cakes. All were beautiful and very tasty which is a big lack in most of today's crappy supermarket breads which people have become accustomed. My favourite was the baguette, it really was out of this world. The breads were a little pricey but WELL worth it. And the place is definetly worth a visit!

The chicken pasty in particular is excellent, lovely chunky pieces of chicken in a light sauce in a light and golden puff pastry. They also have sandwiches, milk, pop, an extensive selection of jams and chutneys and various deli items too. It's a 'must visit' if you're visiting Corbridge, if only to get some of those wonderful scones! :-)

I love bakeries, and I loved the charm of Reeth Bakery. It is not modern inside, and it could perhaps do with a bit of a revamp, but that is a minor issue. My other minor issue was the fact that we had to queue for about 5 minutes to get in due to the number of tourists there and the fact that the bakery is small. Once inside, there was a lot of food on offer, and we bought some brownies, flapjack and a loaf Granarius bread- all were delicious. I think there could have been more staff behind the counter at the time; there was only one woman who didn't seem to be very focused (I don't blame her for her stress- it was busy), but she was very smiley and cheerful and happily chatted to us while getting what we ordered. Afterwards we went into the cafe in the room next door which, again, was very small, simplistic and could benefit from adjustments to its decor. An amiable, polite, intelligent young girl served us quickly without any problems; we each had a slice of cake and some Earl Grey. She was happy to give us directions that we asked for before we left. She was very mature and we were surprised to hear that she had just finished her GCSEs! So, overall, we were impressed with the friendly staff who were willing to have a chat and a laugh with customers (something you don't often find nowadays) and all of the food we bought was delicious. The bakery is a charming place and well worth a visit, as long as you're prepared to queue if you visit in the holidays!

There appeared to be two staff members, with only one serving at any one time; an older gentleman and a young lady. We discovered that on visits where we were served by the young lady she charged, or by the end of the week attempted to charge us between 30-50% more than the gentleman for the same items. If it had happened a couple of times we'd not have noticed but after the 9th time you do think it might not be a coincidence. We worked out that over the week she'd extracted about £60 extra out of us. Not a great deal for 5 blokes on a biking holiday but enough to prompt me to write this! I wouldn't discourage people from visiting however if you are served by a young lady then do check you're being charged appropriately.
