    Brandon M.

for ten years I have cut my own hair to save money then in November I had someone else thrash my hair for me and now I am hooked it is so much nicer to sit back and let someone else run wild on your hair. I scheduled an appointment and when I got there they put me right in, as I walked to the station there are swarms of young beauticians carrying tier severed heads with dreams that stretch on for infinity. I couldn't help but wonder how many would make it. I did the shampoo and told her to run wild with my hair, turns out she was very conservative so much she even parted my hair down the side as though I was young boy on his 1st day of school, but hey she is learning and I know I am only paying $5.00 for this so I let it slide. The instructor comes over makes a few snips and asks me how I am doing, being satisfied with her students performance she sends me on way. It isn't a really great hair cut but I have had worse and the experience alone was worth the discounted good time my hair will grow out and be ready for something new in a few weeks. If you are on a budget with family and children elderly or just wanting to take a chance I recommend coming here, if you are particular about your hair stick with a quality salon.

I really like the vibe of the place it's very welcoming and the people are very loving!! #HairknowledgeUniversityRocks!!!

Disclaimer: This review is for Hair Knowledge University 1039 W Hillcrest Dr. Dekalb, IL 60115…read more I'm not one to leave reviews... and I didn't plan on reviewing this salon/school... until I received this forwarded text: "Just for a future reference if u all are on a tight schedule perhaps you set an earlier appointment, I did not like his attitude nor the fact that he was impatient. Lastly he did not sit to let his hair dry so please do not expect the maintenance to last long. Thank You ~Hair Knowledge University~" Let me start off by saying: I'm not a disrespectful person, actually extremely quiet, I'll never put anyone down and have no problem giving someone a second chance; but there's a first for everything. Also, my complaint is not towards the entire salon/school. The barbers and hair stylist (in the front) were very friendly/welcoming and the place was clean. So with that... I had a 10:30 am appointment on Saturday, but went to the location in Cortland, IL rather than the Dekalb, IL location; so I didn't arrive at the correct location until 10:45 am. That's on me. I walked into the "University" and when asked "What can we do for you?" said "I had an appointment at 10:30a." I was then taken into the back of the "salon" where one "stylist" deep conditioned my dreads with tea tree shampoo (the oil balance should be very interesting) and the other did a retwist. Now according to the "stylist" that washed my hair, the other "stylist" started twisting my dreads at 11:20am and it should've taken 2 hours... That's beside the point. She started parting my hair and retwisting it with brown gel... I should've said something then, but decided to give her/it a chance. As she was retwisting, she decided that the dreads weren't parted correctly and took it upon herself to part them her way; which is fine, but she was actually cutting my dreads to get the part the way she wanted it. On top of that, not once did she palm roll, backcomb, or crochet; just twisted. After almost 4 hours (3pm), she retwisted the last dread and said "Let me put you under the dryer" I then said "I don't have time, I have to go." The "stylist" who washed my hair said "So you just want us to take the clips out?" and I replied "Yes, please." No attitude in any way. I then asked the "stylist" who retwisted my hair if they accepted credit cards and she said "no only cash." I went to 4 different stores on the strip to find an ATM. When I finally found one, I withdrew $60 (prior to going, I was told that it would be $45) I came back and said "It's $45 right?" and she replied with an attitude (go figure) "No, it's $70!" That's my mistake again, I should've asked. So I went back and withdrew an additional $20, gave it to her and rushed to my car. I didn't rush because I was mad that she "cut my dreads, used a dollar store gel, decided to each Cheetos over my head, was more focused on Martin playing in the Playstation then doing my hair", but because my wife had to get to work. I drove for 5 minutes (tops), windows up, air on and arrived at my house. I look in the mirror and what do I see on my dreads? Globs of brown gel and loose hairs everywhere. Now, I know "I'm supposed to see the gel because I didn't sit under the hair dryer", but anyone that knows hair, knows that gel and heat have/will never mixed/mix. Even if I did sit under the dryer. If you put too little in, it dries out and doesn't hold, more than likely causing frizz, and if you put too much in and it dries it'll flake... a lot. My dreads have a mix of too much and too little, the loose hairs/frizz is "unbelievable". The biggest issue is, I've had my dreads for almost two years, and not once have I ever had anyone cut them to make themselves look/feel good. Dreads are supposed to be a representation of their owner. Your dreads will NEVER look like anyone else's no matter how hard you try. For someone to cut them for something as stupid as a part is asinine. She actually managed to destroy what I've been working on for almost 2 years. Congrats. And for that... I'm irritated. For over a year I went to a black owned salon and the same stylist did my hair. Then she started complaining that I had too many dreads (not once did she fuse the dreadlocks and she's the one that started them) and actually made me wait 2 hours after my original appointment time. Last month (August), I went to a salon in Sycamore and paid a stylist $200 to backcomb/crochet my dreads. My dreads have always been twisted and she spent almost 5 hours fixing each and every dread. She did a great job, the only reason I didn't go back is because she uses a shampoo that dries my hair out. During the dread maintenance, she didn't complain once. Just so happens the stylist was white. Based on the events that have occurred today and in the past... I'm finding it harder and harder to support black owned salons. Well done ladies. That false sense of entitlement will get you nowhere. But Best of Luck...

If you are looking for a cosmetology school to attend, look elsewhere. Oehrliens used to be the…read more"go to" place; the name carried a certain level of experience and professionalism, clearly that has been thrown to the whey side. The teachers they have are experienced, have compassion, and care very much if the students succeed in cosmetology. They spend countless hours guiding the students and showing them "tricks of the trade". However, it appears there are only 2 and sometimes 3 teachers other than the owner, she however is a different subject. There was a turn around of employees, and based off the abuse, I can see why. The majority of students spend most days working on their mannequin heads, talking loudly, and laughing. As a customer it's actually quite annoying to have that kind of noise level and distractions. On several occasions the owner would override what a client and their stylist wanted, and choose what she deemed "best". Often times giving the client an entirely different cut, or not allowing them to get the chemical service they had asked for. My child was actually a student there. We spent well over $20k to have my child no longer even want to be in the cosmetology field because of the verbal abuse that was freely given by the owner and her husband. On a regular basis: there were no teachers for the classroom and groups had to be combined, students were belittled, told to get thicker skin, told they would not amount to anything, and told they would never make it in the cosmetology field, yet they would graciously take their $20+k for tuition. If there was an issue with another student, their response would be, "deal with it". There was vandalism and theft that was never addressed and ignored. The dropout rate is very high, and many of those students have to take a break, some come back to finish, but most don't return. If we were able to do it all over again I would certainly say, RUN, don't enroll. Go to Paul Mitchell, it's worth the drive.

I expect long waits at beauty schools, I understand, however when I asked how it worked because I had waited for almost an hour, they said they just must have skipped me and they were really busy. Annoyed I was polite sat down and waited (like an idiot) another 20 minutes, without a word watching client after client called up. I am a VERY patient person, I know what I'm paying for and how it works. It was so disappointing to see they lack of training in customer service. They really do give beauty schools a bad name. Unless you have a "friend" that works here, please don't waste your time. And from the looks of it, if you want a well trained hairdresser don't waste your time here.
