Obviously I don't just wander around Edinburgh spending my time in different tradesman's shops just for shits and giggles, I did actually go there for a reason. Basically the key for the lock on our back door has lasted for 160 years, then I came along, swiftly breaking it in two. Obviously these keys are difficult to replace, and I had to trek around most of Edinburgh before I stumbled in here by chance. To my surprise, they not only could cut a new key for me, but did it by 5 o'clock that afternoon (I went in there about 1ish). Bearing in mind nowhere else could even make one, that's pretty good. They also cleaned up the lock for free as well. The key wasn't too cheap (about £40) but it was very specific and not above expectations. The old boys there are great and totter about with an encyclopaedic knowledge of locks and the like. Useful seeing as I know absolutely nada on the topic. If you're looking for anything key or lock related, come here. It's the best in Edinburgh

The truth is that the quality, as far as new keys are concerned, with professionals at local stores like this, if often far better. At least that is my experience. Cobbler's Key also offer watch battery replacement, patching and stitching of clothes as well as providing a range of leather goods. They also do gardening tool sharpening! Although I can't imagine there is a huge demand for that around here.

As it happens, I had two pairs of boots that were in desperate need of being rehealed, so, shortly before a winter break, I took them in to get repaired. No problem, but due to the time of year (December, busy) they wouldn't be ready until the following Tuesday. Absolutely fine. Of course I then failed to go in a collect them on the Tuesday, and so left it utterly last minute thinking I'd just pick them up on the Wednesday morning on my way in to work (suitcase in tow as I was flying out that afternoon). Fail. Hutton's was shut for their own holiday. And to be fair to them, as soon as I saw the signs saying "Shut Wednesday 2nd - Monday 7th" I realised they had been up the previous week, I'd read the signs and then immediately forgotten about them. This left my in a shoe dilemma, as I'd gone out wearing wellies, and required an emergency purchase from the ever-reliable New Look. When I did manage to go in and collect the shoes, they'd done a great job. The cost of getting two pairs of boots rehealed was just over £16. I have no idea of how expensive or otherwise this is, but it seemed fair. The heals are flat, which is something other cobblers have failed at (why would I want convex heals?!), so they get an immediate thumbs up for that and will earn my repeat custom.

I'm from the area and asked older folk and they said it had been run by the Hutton family since as long as they could remember. After some further research online, it turns out it was opened in 1923 by the grandfather of the current master cobbler, Ian Hutton. Not just a cobblers, they also cuts keys and other jobs like that. After trying the first 5 telephone numbers of which most did not answer and one told me " to call back in the morning if I did not get anyone" I called Dyno locks. They were with me in less than 30 minutes and had me in my house within 10 minutes. The locksmith was very friendly, efficient and opened my door with out any damage and to my surprise with out changing my locks. The cost was reasonable considering it was in the wee small hours. If this ever happens to you don't bother trawling through the one that do not answer and call Dyno locks.

We arranged that he would call at my shop in Bruntsfield (Edinburgh) today and would ascertain what was required. It turned out that he needed to instal a new remote in the car and he drove to where the car was parked, did what he needed to do and was back with a replacement key plus a spare within around half an hour! I am absolutely delighted, it is so unusual to experience such fantastic service these days, plus the cost was fraction of what I would have paid had I gone through a VW dealership. Hopefully, though, unlike me you'll get two working keys. On the day I came here they cut my keys and though miffed at the £15 I went away reasonably happy until I tried to use the keys and they didn't work. I went back to get a new set that would and they didn't work either. In the end I went round about 4 Timpsons to find the elusive set that would work and no refund was on offer at any point during this time. In the end I had to lent my friend my keys for my holiday so he could get in (I was getting keys for him) and hope he would be in when I returned. In general I'm disappointed because they promise so much and should do well. I recommend going elsewhere - Shoeperior is good for keys.
