The museum is free to visit for all not just students and Middlebury College. I went on a Sunday…read moreafternoon, and there was almost no one there. I was absolutely blown away by the depth and breadth of this collection. There was a small sampling and representation from most major in my opinion, art periods throughout world history. We're talking Greek pottery, carvings from Africa, an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, original work from Andy Warhol, John Waters, and Kehinde Wiley... I was stunned to find such a diverse collection in this compact space. And they've done a really nice job of showcasing and displaying all the art; the museum has a nice flow to it and nothing feels cramped. There's also an incredible rotating contemporary exhibit on the second floor. The museum is housed inside the performing arts center on Middlebury College's campus. It is handicapped accessible. There is a staircase connecting the two floors but an elevator is also available. Excellent bathrooms located outside the museum on the main building space. Seriously like the best wheelchair accessible bathroom I've ever been in. 10/10 would definitely recommend visiting. My only regret is that I only had time to go once and it was when I was attending the Language Schools so I was living that exhausted student life and couldn't engage with the art as fully as I would have liked. If I get the opportunity I will definitely be back!

I had heard about the art museum, and my host was so gracious that he took me to go see it. He himself did not seem like an art person and I did not want to keep him in the space for too long, but I managed to nab an adorable picture with him (three years ago wow). The way the museum is designed, there is a permanent collection exhibit of the first floor displaying European and ancient artworks, whereas the second floor features another permanent exhibit on Asian art, which is behind the seasonally rotating exhibit of the second floor, which I argue is the main attraction to the museum (for me at least). I am foolish so I only really got to see four out of the six possible rotating exhibits during my time at Middlebury, which is honestly still pretty good. Many times, I have been on art museum dates with my close friends to sort of escape from the busy humdrum of studying all the time (who am I kidding though, I never study). I caught an exhibit on 1968 this past spring, a pivotal moment in American history. I missed the Keith Haring collection sadly, but I look forward to catching Islamic art this fall before it too disappears.

The aroma of old print seduces you to the back of the store, where you are greeted by well-worn chairs surrounded by stacks of volumes just begging you to peer inside. So complete is the enchantment of this shop that you are removed from time and space until all that is left is you, the sacred words and bindings, and a feeling of comfort and contentment. Moreover, the woman and her young son who run it are delightful, cheerful, and helpful. Her son and my young daughter wandered the stacks together, engrossed in conversations about their pacifiers, dolls, and other things that those who do not speak their toddler language cannot hope to understand. For anyone who loves books, new or old, on any topic, and who loves the quiet peace that haunts every nook and cranny of Vermont, this bookstore is a must-visit. Wander in, run your hands down the rows of worn bindings, sit and dive into the pages, and purchase a few unforgettable editions for your home library. You won't be disappointed! I, for one, will be returning often to enjoy the ambiance and to explore the multitudinous titles.

I stopped by on the way back from Burlington to New York to stretch my legs and I'm so glad I did!…read more When I stopped by they were having an international contest of atlatl, an ancient hunting weapon, a wooden handle to help launch spears. I have never heard of it, but the mechanics of it made sense to me when explained - it works a lot better than throwing spears with bare hands. Apple trees in front of the museum was loaded with nice apples. I was so surprised to see them, because in Central New York we had a terrible apple year this year, producing something like only under 10% of the usual year. Our local orchard that usually have their stands full of apples had none this year, and they were selling vegetables instead. I asked and I was told that it's because Lake Chaplain protected those trees from frost damage at a wrong time of year. Whoa! I am so glad that I feel like I learned quite a bit at the museum about the history of Vermont in this quick visit. For example, I learned that Burlington where my son is at was under water many thousands of years ago. The history of Native Americans (Abenakis), the French, the British and Americans were nicely organized and displayed. I loved looking at the preserved tavern, and explanations about period clothings that were displayed upstairs. Loved photographs and paintings of local birds, also upstairs, in the hallway. I also enjoyed reading bout Olmsted and looking at the carved canoe. I had no idea they burn the wood to hollow out the wood to make those canoes - it makes complete sense but somehow I used to imagine they must have carved the woods out by hands. It was cool to look up at the bridge from below, too! It's definitely a great place to make a stop to stretch your legs during your drive.
