I thought I could do the rest myself, but I realized my limitations and looked for a contractor to grade the planting areas, fix a grassy area that was a mess due to tree roots, fix the irrigation including a whole new drip and replacing the sprinkler zone. In addition, we needed a concrete walkway and some stepping stones. Kam from Art of the Earth (AOTE) came to provide a quote and it was clear he had both a deep understanding of plants and a sense of how to use them within a landscape to create art. He focused on year round color and explained how that would be achieved. We agreed from the beginning that the look I wanted to achieve was as natural as possible without straight lines. The project manager, Tyler, the foreman, Jose and Hernon worked with focus on achieving the vision. I could tell this by the way they would stop, standback and assess the progress. We communicated routinely, and they all listened to our thoughts attentively. There were some additions and subtractions from the initial quote and the price impact was agreed upon promptly and fairly. They cleaned up at the end of every day's work which my wife was particularly happy with. Communication was great throughout, and there were no surprises except they surprised me with ways to surpass my expectations with their focus on achieving our goals. I wholeheartedly recommend AOTE for any work, but especially if you are looking for an artful (not slapped together) look.

Kody planned to meet me on a Saturday, but was able to move it up to a Friday afternoon. He was polite, friendly, offered some welcome suggestions and amazingly had the quote to me in less than 2 hours. After I accepted the bid, he asked when I wanted the project done. Knowing it took a while to even get on their calendar, I kiddingly said. "Preferably in 2023" (Note: I had a horrible experience with my contractor on time-lines, so knowing how busy the summers were I wasn't optimistic.) But I was stunned, thrilled and excited when Kody said; "How about we start on Monday?" I know this may not have been the norm, however, since they did have a crew working on another project in the vacinity, it was easy for the amazing Tyler to come and work on my project. Tyler was efficient, meticulous and extremely tidy as he single handedly beautified my property. Not a hint of rock was left from all the perma-bark that was unloaded in the street, remained where it was dumped. Tyler swept, after each day of work and showed an extreme amount of pride in his work. I would be amiss if I failed to mention, that Monday morning when I was reviewing the project with both Kody and Tyler; that Kody, in the most gentil manner, asked if he could pray with me; over the project, the work being done and all of us involved. Company was hired to trim bushes, clear leaves and debris, pull weeds and suckers. They arrived…read morelate, raised the price upon arrival, and cut me off during my instructions. They then proceeded to do work on only a quarter of the property, left early and left before the work could be verified. They then threatened a lien on my property and to return the debris if I did not pay the full bill over the weekend. When asked to finish the job, they ghosted for two weeks. When they did reply to schedule a return visit, they did not bother to check if the date or time would work for me. After renegotiating a reduced price for the work that was completed, they then sent an invoice for more than the agreed upon price. They fabricate sob stories to try and guilt trip you, they're unprofessional, and rude.

They had absolutely no idea how to correctly install pavers, couldn't even plant a tree straight and just left the project looking unfinished. Sad thing is I did my research but apparently not enough. Knowing better, should have stopped them and fired them... however, we thought it might get better. We spent a good amount of money on this project only to have to tear everything out and redo the pavers. The company that really came to the rescue was Aguiar Pavers. Based out of WA. state but branching into Idaho. My first call to their office was handled nicely and we did have to wait 2 weeks for our appt. Wesley came to the house, gave me some ideas on how to fix or redo the mess currently in place and after some thought, we decided to move forward. (We had also interviewed 6 other contractors in the area before deciding on Aguiar). They were actually able to start within a few days....amazing work ethic, he has a team of 7 and they had my patio and walkway completed in a week. It looks so good and I am just in awe. I am only sorry I didn't find them in the beginning. So, long story short, if you are looking for someone who knows what they are doing, don't hesitate to call them. Typical contractor…read more Approached them at the start of September. They were quick to jump on providing an estimate and worked with me to get to itemize my desired work done into budget...but little did I know that's where the fun just started. Actual work didn't start into middle of October and lasted until after Thanksgiving. Work done: Pavers, water feature (added waterfall onto existing pond), extend a path from patio to a detached office about 40 yards from my main home using flagstone already on the property. Total cost quoted: $32K. Stan is a even tempered guy. He is the face of the company and deals with customers. Behind Stan you have front office lady (who is his accountant) and few solid tenured workers, but also an army of workers who don't speak English very well. Stan provided me this quote and sold me on the workmanship and his relationship with local vendors + his experience doing similar projects. Once work started the quote started to balloon and additional invoices started to roll in. What you thought was going to be in budget slowly and gradually started turning into something you weren't planning on. 1. Putting irragation pipes into sleeves where there pavers were going to go is extra. About 2K extra. That wasn't in the original quote. Doing this work was put this way - "If the pipe ever breaks (doubtful), you'll need to rip up the pavers to do the fix, but the sleeve will save you the trouble of the potential issue in the future. No doubt, this is the right thing to do, but to spring it on you like, yeah no biggie, it's just an extra 2K is ridiculous. 2. Electricity. You want to have a dedicated circuit for the water feature and a dedicated circuit for the heater you want in the office building. I know we didn't spec that out, but you should do it, if you want it done properly. We'll find you the electrician and we'll dig the trench for you. Sure I said. Additional estimate for the just the trench was nearly 6K. The trench distance was about 130 feet. My jaw dropped. Me and my 12 year son dug 25% of the 18" ditch ourselves and I hired a guy who did the rest in a day for 450 bucks. This was where my trust for this guy vanished. All those smooth talks and nice negotiations went out the window. 3. Paver Patio was quoted to be a lopsided patio where one side was longer than the other. Once work started, Stan's patio paver guy (who spoke with really broken English) asked me if I wanted a symmetrical patio or stick with the lopsided one. I said I wanted a symmetrical one that looks good. Apparently that's EXTRA!!! More invoices. About 2K extra for that. Oh, and we needed to move more irragation hoses. That's extra didn't you know. 4. Same Paver Patio guy started working on the path to my office, and asked me how wide I wanted the path. I showed him where and how I wanted it and is it turned out, what I showed him was different from the size than what was quoted! By adding about 2 feet to the width of the path equated to an additional 2K in charges. (extra 150 linear feet). Bottom line - $32K turned into over $40K. That easily could have been near 50 had I gone with this generous offer to dig my trench for my electrical. This guy runs his business like an airline company. Lots of hidden fees which he claims aren't hidden. Sound familiar? You book your travel, but once your book your hooked into continuing to use the services at hand while the larger project is ongoing. It's like your travel plans are booked and the airline has you baggage, you can't easily go elsewhere for other services until your flight is landed and you've arrived. I want to end by saying that the actual work done was good. I'm not upset about the work actually done. Attention to overal detail was good. I've seen a lot worse from different contractors I've worked with. Not A+, but A-. I would give the following grades: Pavers: A- Water feature: A Flagstone Path: B Also, the sprinkler guy, Brett is solid. He knows his stuff. Working with him would be the only reason I would go back and use this company again. The round up this LONG discourse is this: Good work but you pay a premium where you could get the same elsewhere for less. The part that really got to me was the audicity of the trench work. When you quote people for REALLY basic things like trench work for ridiculous prices - you expose yourself because you prices are not defendable, which makes you question the margin that goes into the other not obvious things that are being charged. These landscape companies have a lot of overhead and they need to cover costs of marketing, search engine seeding, accounting software, salaries, etc... Think this through before engaging with one of these types of company's in the valley. They all probably operate in a similar manner.
