In addiiton to being a supermarket, the salad bar rocks. It's always fresh and I take the large box and never pay more than 5 Euro. Let me be clear....this is a salad with everything which more or less stuffs you. The selection in the supermarket itself is a bit thin but what do you expect from a supermarket in the middle of town. You'll find everything you need...there just won't be 10 different brands offering each product. In summary, a hidden gem in the middle of town!

The store is quite large and the aisles are wide, so it never feels busy (except when you're at the registers). I really like the large selection of frozen meats with duck, pheasant, quail, boar and game, among others. I wished the store had a butcher, right now it only has a large deli. All the fresh meat comes in plastic packaging. There is a small fresh fish counter but it looks quite sad.

Instead of inspecting it right in the middle of the thoroughfare, I stepped aside into a corner in its cafe seating area to get out of everyone's way. Not a word of a lie, I was not loitering and only there for a few seconds, before a cafe assistant immediately told me to leave the area as it was for 'Customers dining only'. I was not occupyying the seating area and explained I was quickly checking my receipt and will leave immediately. The cafe assistant was indifferent and repeated the area was for dining customers only and if I needed to check my receipt to go and check elsewhere! I wouldn't mind as much if the cafe area was bursting at its seams and my groceries were sprawled across the tables and occupying unnecessary space. The said cafe area was completely empty!!! Not a customer in sight. How ridiculous! No standing in the five foot exclusion zone not even for a few seconds. So whose way am I in exactly? Let's ask its customers shall I? No wait, there aren't any to ask! Strange how Rewe was happy to accept my business a minute ago. Well, I've conceded it's a classic case of post business 'You don't exist' syndrome. Needless to say, I shall be reciprocating, I won't be parting cash at this supermarket again.

I like to tuck a wad of tuna over to one side, and for dressing use the tsatsiki. I always feel great after eating this salad, and sometimes have such a hankering for it that I make a special trip, though the location, directly above the escalators from the S-Bahn in Altona, makes it about as handy as you can get. The price is absurdly good when you compare it to salad bars in the U.S., by the way. (There is a similar Edeka salad bar upstairs in the Hbf downtown that is similarly great.)

I guess most people who will come here on a Sunday will be avoiding the extortionate breakfast prices of the nearby Hotels (Lindner, Adina et al) We came here today after a visit to the Ice Rink, on a cold crispy January Sunday. We were going to go somewhere else, but it was closed, so this place is on the way back to our apartment and in we trotted. So we opted for some wurst croissants, Berliners and Hot Chocolate. All in all, not very nice and 16 Euro for the lot hardly a bargain. I then had a Milchkaffee, which came with that horrid watery milk that only a machine can produce. Anyway, it was warm in there, pretty busy and no massive rip off however if you have a choice of places to go (and there are thousands of coffee shops / bakeries in Hamburg) I would opt for an alternative if I were you.
