Gluten-free review: I am a bit confused which Edeka I went to while in Hamburg. I believe it was this one, which is a medium-sized corner market- like a big market for NYC, but small-ish for any other city stateside. I believe there might be a much larger Edeka (not Edeka Kraus) just up the street (5-10 minute walk) in a shopping center. However, Edeka Kraus was closest to my hotel and had everything I needed: a gluten free section, fresh fruit, water, and dairy products.
The gluten free section is, like most markets and DMs I went to in Hamburg and Berlin, primarily Schar products. However, Schar has a much bigger range here than in the US. There were also products by Bahlsen not available in the US and a few other things.
Just like at every other market in Italy/Germany/Switzerand, be sure you take your own bags. Particular to Germany: not all markets have credit card machines. I paid cash here, as did everyone else I saw, but it appeared they had a credit card machine, too. Not sure if they charge extra for using it. read more
