Gluten-free review: I am a bit confused which Edeka I went to while in Hamburg. I believe it was…read morethis one, which is a medium-sized corner market- like a big market for NYC, but small-ish for any other city stateside. I believe there might be a much larger Edeka (not Edeka Kraus) just up the street (5-10 minute walk) in a shopping center. However, Edeka Kraus was closest to my hotel and had everything I needed: a gluten free section, fresh fruit, water, and dairy products. The gluten free section is, like most markets and DMs I went to in Hamburg and Berlin, primarily Schar products. However, Schar has a much bigger range here than in the US. There were also products by Bahlsen not available in the US and a few other things. Just like at every other market in Italy/Germany/Switzerand, be sure you take your own bags. Particular to Germany: not all markets have credit card machines. I paid cash here, as did everyone else I saw, but it appeared they had a credit card machine, too. Not sure if they charge extra for using it.

Of all the Edeka's I've been to in Hamburg, this is definitely one of the nicest. It's in a brand…read morenew building and is much larger than your standard Edeka so you're not walking on top of each other. Selection is perhaps a tad better than at the others in the area, but it's still not the spot to find that obscure pack of American brown sugar or a halfway decent selection of cheeses (my bar there is admittedly really high). Prices are on par with other Edeka's in the area: high enough to let you know you're paying too much but not so Whole Foods-absurd to convince you to walk 10 more blocks to a cheaper place. Pfand machine is rarely in use and works really well, which doesn't appear to be the norm around here. There is a parking deck in the back (entrance is on Hahnemannstraße), and I *think* they validate for an hour or so. I live just above this store, so I've never had to actually use that. There is also a bakery and DM upstairs, so you could kill 3 birds with one stone. The bread at the bakery and Edeka is definitely a rip off, but it's good and convenient if you're short on time.

By far, this location is one of the smallest and most cramped. Definitely avoid it during rush hour, which seems to hit around 6pm on weekdays. Selection is as limited as the one at the Hauptbahnhof, if not more. On the other hand, they have a surprising array of fresh cheeses and bread here, both at really decent prices. You can easily grab yourself a loaf for 2€ whereas the average is more around 4€ and up at my Edeka Kraus. Keeping with the cramped theme, though, the checkout lanes are essentially on top of each other. The 4th cashier on the right actually requires you to pass through the 3rd cashier's lane, which doesn't seem very practical or efficient to me if that lane is itself backed up. On the plus side, they have 2 bottle return machines (although they're both extremely finicky). They also put out empty cardboard boxes by the checkout lanes, something I haven't seen at any other Edeka but would come in super handy if you forgot your bag or want to carry home a few bottles of wine. Given the competition in the area is basically Aldi, this is definitely a step up from that. But I would gladly make the longer trip to Rewe Center on Dorotheenstrasse if I were in Winterhude longer.

(getting sad while I write this) There is a huge variety of health food including (every single kind of) nut butters + coconut butter, seeds (no chia in Germany), puffed grains(!!!!), goji berries, cocoa butter(for cooking), coconut oil etcetc. (Although I was never able to find coconut water) Special shoutout to the organic quark here. Produce section is small and vegetables are not always the best looking but I always leave with a heavy heavy shopping bag. It can certainly get busy which makes me feel even worse for holding up lines during checkout (you have to pack your own grocery bags). They only sell paper bags here which are not that sturdy so I always brought my plastic. No credit card accepted.

The selection here is great for an organic place, its just as big as some EDEKA in Hamburg. What I like the most about this place is their in-house brand, of which they have a very good selection of products they sell under their own Alnatura name. The prices on these products are generally very good- around or less than what you would pay for a non-organic name brand except, well, organic ;). Their organic cheese selection is good (I recommend the Demeter Bergkäse) and they always have three or four cheeses that are on sale. The one thing that can get expensive here is some non-house brand things as well as fruits and vegetables- I generally only get what I really need and try to get the rest of my veggies at one of the organic open-air markets with regional producers, which usually ends up saving a few Euros (like the one on the Lange Reihe on Fridays).
