I had a terrible experience with Ede and Ravenscroft's graduation photography service. The photos were poor quality with black marks caused by a camera fault, and I had to go through 44 emails just to get an acceptable version. The final images were cropped badly, the mounts were dented, and further edits were made without my consent. Communication was slow, confusing, and at times rude. I paid for professional photos to capture a special day and instead received stress, disappointment, and poor customer care. I would never use this company again or recommend them to anyone. read more

oooooooeeee!!! This is such an Edinburgh shop. When I was taking a picture for all you yelp fans out there I was accosted by an employee of this fine establishment and asked my purpose and for ID! I've never been asked for ID from a clothes shop in my lift! PAH! This aside, this shop really does cater for the upper-class Edinburgh socialite. They have some lovely clothes, the quality speaks for itself. (as does the price tag). The staff are somewhat...erm...stuffy and the general atmosphere of the shop is somewhat pretentious I'm afraid to say.....but they have really good quality items and if you're into that sort of thing then by all means have a dander! read more

These guys supplied all our robes and hoods etc for graduation, and I have to say it was all very efficient. Efficiency though, whch came at a price; I paid upwards of £50 to hire a gown that I wore for about an hour and a half. That said, when we all descended on McEwan Hall at 9am on the morning of our graduation, every single one of us had exactly the right size gown and colour of hood waiting for us. In fact I don't know of any of my friends whose order had been messed up. I don't really have any experience of the retail side of this shop, other than their proud boast that they've been around since Tudor times, so I couldn't really comment on that. But for hiring formal or occasionwear, I'd definitely recommend it. Just make sure there's plenty of wiggle-room left on your credit card for that month! read more

I have a huge bone to pick with Ede & Ravenscroft. My graduation gown, according to the website, was supposed to be black, with a black silk hood lined with white silk. Now, hats off to them, they got the colours spot on. And they were very efficient from start to finish. However, it was definitely not silk. Every other graduate with a different coloured hood had a silk lining, and it looked nice. Us MA lot had to make do with a cheap looking polyester. Now I wouldn't mind this at all if it had been advertised as 'black cheap polyester hood with cheap polyester white lining'. But it wasn't. And it cost the same amount as the silk hoods. That just seemed a bit unfair. Also, it was £40 to wear something for about 3 hours, and it wasn't even ironed properly. Having a complete monopoly on graduation gown hire, they seem to just take you for a bit of a ride. Only problem is, there's no one else to get your gowns from. read more

Like many of the other reviewers, my graduation gown came from Ede and Ravenscroft and I found the service to be easy to use and very efficient. My gown looked good, although they were clearly well worn and cost about £40 for a few hours, although if you paid another £15 you could have had it until the next day. I never wanted to take mine off, I loved it! Everything about the Ede and Ravenscroft shop feels regal and up-market so you sort of feel out of place walking around in there. I have no complaints though, they provided a good service for me and I loved wearing my gown on the day! read more

This is the first time I have every purchased anything in this shop and I have to say, the experience was very pleasant. The frontage of the shop is wonderful and the interior is spectacular. This all adds to the "buying experience" in my opinion. Clearly the clothes are of great quality with a hefty price tag on some items. The ties I thought expensive at pushing £100 but oddly, the suits seemed very reasonable. My motive for visiting E&R was that their shirts are British made which is important to me. Seem nice quality at a fair price (about £75). The service was OK, if a little lacklustre. I was surprised that ties were not worn by the staff..... but maybe I am just old fashioned. As with everyone else, my robes were hired from Ede and Ravenscroft, who were the official robe makers for the university from which I graduated. When you drape those robes around your shoulders, you do brim up with a sense of pride, even if you're paying the best part of 50 quid for three hours wear. I pranced around and swung my degree scroll with the best of them on graduation day. Well made and dripping in quality, Ede and Ravenscroft are the definition of old fashioned tailor. They've been around for centuries and still hold that air of sophistication. It's quite an intimidating shop to browse around - as Emily stated it is still a bit stuffy. It's ultra, ultra expensive but the suits are perfection, and the ladies clothing is a fusion of old Victorian styles with a contemporary twist which took me by surprise. It's modern and elegant - no petticoats and ankle length skirts in sight. This place is for the rich, there's no disputing that fact. I can imagine millionaire bachelors, ex military and gentleman's club members shopping in here. I don't think it's relatable to the everyday shopper. But then, it's carrying an old fashioned institution, so it doesn't have to be. I'll probably only ever wear robes from here but that's good enough for me! read more

One rubbish place to take graduation pictures. I got my graduation pictures from them and the came out really poor. On the day, there was not enough staff to process the number of students wanting to take pictures. The qeau was son long that you wasted the whole day waiting there, instead of spending tie with your friend and family. After an hour waiting to take pictures, you got your chance and it did not last a minutes or so. they even did let you see the pictures that where taken. So you did not see how they came out. The place was so hot that you started to sweat . after 4 week the pictures came. The quality of the print was awful, dark and dull prints. They even got the name of the organisation wrong, they printed the name of the organisation that you where studying at, instead of the university that accredited your degree. the staff on the day where very unhelpful and did not seem to guide or provide enough informations about the photograph and options available. They where more concern about how they could squeeze the most money out of you and screw you over. When i spoke to staff over the phone, their attitude was that you state that the college was where you graduated from at you wrote this down on the form. They take advantage of your lack of understanding of the situation you are in. this place the blame on the individual. In my case there was no support from the staff. They assume that the college name was the place i graduated from instead of the university that accredited my degree. Overprice and poor quality photos. They have no interest in ensuring that you'll be looked after well. They arse lick you when they want your money, but failed to deliver the quality of after sales service when things go wrong. you feel cheated by the company when you do business with them. the pray on you lack knowledge, circumstances, well you should have know about it, you wrote it attitude. the graduation day was ruin by the company because so many people took too long queing to take pictures and they all came out poor. i speak behalf of my class mates and other who have experienced it. People would have wrote more negative reviews but they can't be bothered. don't let these doggy organisation get a way with it. everything was ruin because of them, university and colleges should be more careful when choosing ede and revercroft. read more

As is sadly the case in many universities in the UK, at Imperial College we were not given a choice of companies to hire our gowns from. The only option was Ede and Ravenscroft, with a price tag of £45 for a few hours gown hire. Having arrived at the collection point I was met by uninterested and unhelpful people issuing the gowns. They were supposed to "help put to gown on and ensure it is worn properly". Instead, I was just asked if I brought safety pins. Safety pins?! Yes of course I brought safety pins to my graduation ceremony (not!). Apparently, what anyone from Ede and Ravenscroft failed to mention to any of us, was that in order to ensure the collar is not trying to choke you to death, it needs to be pinned down. Finally, I managed to borrow some safety pins from a friend and went back assuming they will at least pin the hood in place. No way! I had to do this myself... As a result, the whole thing just looked ridiculous and horrible, and all my photographs are ruined. I got home from the ceremony and wrote a long complaint e-mail. Three weeks later, I received a very passive aggressive reply informing me they do mention on their website to wear a button down shirt. Well, that doesn't help someone who doesn't want to wear a button down shirt (which was about 90% of females at the ceremony). I could not (easily) find this anywhere on the website, it is probably hidden away in the small print section. I am severely disappointed by the service received by Ede and Ravenscroft. They might be the "oldest tailors in London" and so on, but maybe it is time to review their prices and customer service policy or for a new company to provide similar services so at least students are given a cheaper alternative. read more

I agree with Neal W - I hired my graduation gown from E&R and was first of all very surprised at how cheap they were... horrible man-made polyester-type material and, not only that, but they were all stacked up folded, so when you put them on, they were totally creased all over. I felt this ruined the photos because the creases are very noticeable in our photos and it just makes the gowns look even cheaper than they felt. The fact they charge a scandalous £39 just to hire it for a couple of hours makes this even more disappointing (and that's with a "student discount"!). My advice would be to either keep the prices high, but improve the quality of the gowns (e.g. use silk, as stated in the description!) and to have them presented better for the day, i.e. ironed and hung up, not rolled up into piles of creased polyester static! On a positive note, they were very organised - the whole process of getting my gown hired, collected and returned went very smoothly. P.S. Also design something that holds the hood down for the many people who do not have button holes - holding it with one hand is just not practical!! read more

Very poor customer services. I have not received my graduation photos 3 months after the ceremony. Date - 17 Nov 2015 Time: 1pm Venue - Coventry University. I called to ask what was the problem & I was told to provide the following information: order No.; my docket & a copy of a photo taken at the ceremony, which I did; still no word for another 2 weeks. I demand a full explanation for the delay in receiving my photo. I demand that my photo be sent immediately without further delay I demand full compensation for the bad customer service I received in that there was no contact with me by phone or email to explain the delay. And when I called to request for my photos, the agent I spoke with was expecting me to provide every thing to prove; up to asking the ridiculous questions like who is the photographer. Why is it that the information on the docket or name or order number cannot be used to trace my order. Obviously their competitor - William Northam offer a more excellent service. My wife had her graduation ceremony in January at DMU & we received the photos from them in 2 weeks. complaint was not given a prompt consideration & no one had the courtesy to contact me to let me know what is going on. VERY BAD COMPANY; I WLL NOT RECOMMEND THEM AT ALL & HOPE INSTITUTIONS STOP USING THEM. read more

Unfortunately I had no choice but to use Ede and Ravenscroft for my university graduation robes. I am graduating from my PhD and have bought the robes (which were very expensive). As my university's name was still on the drop down list I was still able to buy the robes for the graduation (according to the website), however, they had not arrived one week before graduation and I had not heard anymore information about the order. I rang customer services and they could not have given a damn. The person on the other end of the line sounded barely awake anddid not have an ounce of concern in his voice. I was simply told they would not be ready on time (but was not told this when I ordered the robes...). I was given free hire which was no consolation as I really wanted to graduate in my own gown, hence why I bought it in the first place. My other concern is if I had not contacted them I do not know what would have happened on my graduation day. I think would not recommed the company whatsoever. read more
