These guys supplied all our robes and hoods etc for graduation, and I have to say it was all very efficient. Efficiency though, whch came at a price; I paid upwards of £50 to hire a gown that I wore for about an hour and a half. That said, when we all descended on McEwan Hall at 9am on the morning of our graduation, every single one of us had exactly the right size gown and colour of hood waiting for us. In fact I don't know of any of my friends whose order had been messed up. I don't really have any experience of the retail side of this shop, other than their proud boast that they've been around since Tudor times, so I couldn't really comment on that. But for hiring formal or occasionwear, I'd definitely recommend it. Just make sure there's plenty of wiggle-room left on your credit card for that month!

This is THE place to get a hand made and made to order kilt or suit. During my visit, I watched as the owner fitted a groom for his wedding kilt. Kilts are traditionally made for men, but they will create a hostess skirt or shorter skirt for women also. Should you not be affiliated with a Highland clan, fear not. There are tartan patterns for everyone, in beautiful colors; they even have an X-Box tartan. This is ground zero for tartan wear and Harris tweed. Look no further.

I ordered and paid up front for the whole thing which included flashes. I didn't buy the cheap-end kilt either... it was the top end fabric. I was told it would take 4-6 weeks. 8 weeks later, I call... "it should be in this week and we'll get it to you overnight" (well, 2 days for international but I get the idea). 3 1/2 weeks later it comes in the mail. I honestly believe they completely forgot about it. Anyway, I put it on... doesn't fit. The inside belt doesn't even reach the buckle. Also, no flashes. I send an email... no response. I eventually call; no explanation for not getting the email. We reached an agreement that I'll get it altered locally and send them the receipt and they'll reimburse me. Also, they'll get the flashes sent out. I go to the alteration shop and they measured me again just to make sure... yup, no change in my waistline so Nicolson's obviously messed up the measurement of the belt. So, they put on a new belt in the appropriate spot. I email Nicolson's the scanned image of the receipt. 2 weeks later, I email them again... still no response. I call them: "your emails must have been accidentally deleted" (really? who in your company would delete 2 emails specifically saying "here's the receipts you requested"?). They ask for them again. I send them. No response. 3 weeks later I call: "1,000 apologies... the email must have been deleted by mistake". They reverse the fee on my card over the phone. Oh, and still no sign of the flashes. Weeks later I call regarding the flashes. Same excuses. This goes on and on. 2 of the calls' responses were "oh, they are going to arrive tomorrow, and I'll send them out for overnight delivery". One was "I'll take care of that this afternoon". Nothing for a month after each phone call. After another series of phone calls and almost 11 months later, I finally get my flashes. I would have been better of buying it locally even though it would have cost a little more because I would have had everything in 3 weeks instead of 11 months. In short, they ignore my emails and I cannot trust anyone who repeatedly says "it will be in this week" or "I'll take care of it right away" and then no response. I had to contact them everytime... they never reached out to me at any time. Obviously, they just don't care. There is no other explanation for the complete lack of effort on their part to resolve this disaster of an order.

It's impossible to describe this place adequately…read more All three of the branches in Edinburgh (also on the Royal Mile and in the Grassmarket) are tiny and absolutely crammed with any type of trinket you could ever imagine. The kinds things that you see when you're in Morocco, South America or Thailand and would love to buy but know there's no point even trying to get it back the the UK in one piece. They have drapes, throws, incense, jewellery, handmade notebooks, hanging masks/purses/bags/just about anything you can think of to hand-make... but the best thing is the prices. The kind of ethnic-looking jewellery or homeware you'd happily pay loads for in a department store can be snapped up here for pennies. Don't miss... the pashminas. The amount of times people have stroked whichever of Lokaah's pashminas from my extensive collection that I'm wearing that day and asked where I got it from, and told me how they bet it had cost a bomb, has to be some kind of indicator! What's more, you can bag yourself one for as little as £2. My description of this place doesn't do it justice - you have to go and see for yourself.

Definitely come here if you're into harem pants, incense, and saris. In my opinion Lokaah is a cut above other similar shops that tend to be incredibly expensive. In particular Lokaah stocks a range of amazing hand-carved wooden figures and chests that make ideal gifts. They even accept Euros here, so stop by to unload unwanted shrapnel on lovely trinkets.

I had walked past it a few times and was a little worried when she insisted on taking us here, I had nightmares as to what she was going to choose for us unsuspecting bridesmaids. This shop reminds me of the dresses you see those awful, spoiled kids wear on My Super Sweet 16. You know the ridiculously bright coloured, bedazzled, over the top monstrosities I'm talking about. Everything is so 'in your face' that the only girl you can imagine wearing these dresses is perma-tanned and peroxide blonde. Or perhaps Jordan. That being said, your 16 year old daughter who knows no better will probably love this shop and find the perfect dress for her prom. She will just look back in 5 years and be horrified. Oh and thankfully the bride-to-be did not inflict any of these dresses on us.

Well fear not my dear prom-goers you can get your dress from Butterflies. (do they even do proms here??) I haven't spent a great deal in the shop, so I hope that with enough browsing you might find something a bit more sophisticated and perhaps even chic. Then again you might be really cool like my friend who does fabrics and fashion at ECA and whip up something yourself for a fraction of a price. If you are like me - a bit useless with the needle- you might best try your luck elsewhere for a formal gown. Sorry Butterflies but no thank you!
