The Polka is a cheerful looking children's theatre at the end of Wimbledon Broadway. One look at…read morethe cheery colours and decoration and their zany clock outside is enough to brighten your day if not your mood. They put on children's plays as well as children's events in the spaces inside. My interest is that I heard from Laura N that they moved the teddy bear collection from the National Teddy Bear Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon when it shut. Being an arctophile, I felt duty-bound to investigate. Basically, it's not a museum as they open at irregular hours but if you ask the staff, they will show you to the collection and it's free. The range isn't as big as it was in Stratford but at least they're trying to save it for future generations. A new national teddy bear museum. Now, that's an interesting project........

However after later going to other places I realised how special the Polka theatre is. It is a charity and has a special real care and meaning behind it's work. Other commercial places may seem superficially good, but they do not have that spirit of care and which makes it special. This can be seen how the actors look at people in the audience in the eye and are not just in their own world delivering the material by rote. The Polka Theatre is more for people who would like their children to be exposed to the goog quality higher arts. Rather than other places that do sensationalist rubbish that is like junk food which makes kids hyperactive and overexcited. it is a traditional old fashioned theatre with traditional old fashioned toys for the children to play with. However it is good and wholesome which is to myself is what matters. I hope this place stays around for a long time!

The bar area by the stalls are pretty standard with friendly staff. The place does get a bit cold but it is a very old theatre. Depending on what's showing, I'd come back.

Built in 1910, it is a classic of Edwardian design, with a richly decorated baroque and Adams-style interior. It is a Grade II listed historic building. It's also one of the largest venues in London, seating 1,700 in a broad auditorium. Taken over by the Ambassador Theatre Group in 2003, it is slowly being restored to its original condition. The theatre presents a varied repertoire, focusing on popular productions, including musicals, opera, comedy, special events and music performances. In recent years, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has had a season at Wimbledon, which has proved extremely popular (the acoustics are well suited to a full-sized orchestra). A speciality is performances designed for the whole family, such as tours from the Moscow State Circus, culminating in one of London's best pantomime seasons throughout December and January. We saw a stunning pro-am performance of 'La Cage aux Folles' there a few years ago, which beat the film versions hands down. The theatre has very good provision for those with disabilities - contact the box office in advance for details. Guide dogs are welcome and the theatre provides state-of-the-art infra-red listening systems. Although parking nearby is a little limited, patrons can use the Centrecourt Shopping Centre Car Park at a reduced rate (inform the box office to validate your ticket). Public transport provision is excellent, as the theatre is adjacent to the bus station, and just five minutes from Wimbledon station, for National Rail, underground and Croydon Tramlink.

Then came really stellar wine...then brilliant food...the amazing dessert and coffee. So paired with incredible service and entertainment, this may have been the most perfectly outstanding night spent with two enormously wonderful friends. Well done.

There is a car park next to the venue, however it belongs to the offices near by so park there at your own risk. It strikes me as a good venue for artists and audiences alike. The artists can perform in an environment which allows for a certain amount of intimacy. There is a bar area which has seats, so if you prefer to be near the bar and watch the show you can, however there is a glass screen between the bar area and the main floor so what you would hear I don't know. The food they serve is to cater for a wide range of tastes, fish & chips, jerk chicken (which if you are like me needs some proper spice to it) and some salads. The portion size was good and i did not feel the need for desert, although nothing took my fancy!! They had the usual variety of wines, beers, sprits along with some cocktails. The time it took to get served was ok no long waits and it was packed. Its always nice to not have to go to the bar to order your drinks so the table service was very much appreciated!! We witnessed Michelle John, who I had not seen on the Voice and she most certainly can sing!!
