Built in 1861, this Victorian Italianate architecture-style home was constructed over a span of two…read moreyears at a total cost of $14,000 dollars. The Asa Packer Mansion listed as a National Historic Landmark was the home of philanthropist, railroad magnate, and founder of Lehigh University, Asa Packer, from Oct. 16, 1861, to Oct. 29, 1912. Located in Jim Thorpe, this building is recognized by a red-ribbed tin roof and a central cupola proudly atop Packer Hill with the commanding stunning views of the surrounding Pocono Mountains, where my partner, his aunt and I came for a tour today. Tickets were easily available and reasonably priced for the 1pm tour, which covered the entirety of the first and second floors. Our tour guide was a young lady (she mentioned she is a senior in high school) who obviously loves her job and is personally interested in the history of the mansion and family. From the furniture, woodwork, and stained glass to the artwork, she spoke about the history or significance. The mansion is not a restoration where pictures and video are prohibited inside. An amazing walk back in time, for which we can recommend this place.

Our tour guide was very passionate about the subject and brought the story of the home to life. We learned so much about Asa Packer and his family as well as his contributions to the town itself. I highly recommend visiting the mansion. It's very affordable and you won't regret it. The setting is very scenic as it's set atop a gorgeous hill overlooking the region. Bonus points if you have the opportunity to visit during the fall season. You'll be surrounded by the most beautiful foliage. But very important to note, accessing the museum means walking up the hill and some stairs. It's a short walk but could be taxing for some. Very much worth your efforts though!

We love visiting Eckley and have been here multiple times. Just to visit and for events. Today was…read moretheir first ever Hooch Wagon Brew Fest. We purchased two tickets for a little over $80 with fees. We arrived at opening at checked in, showed our ID's and were given wrist bands. The woman at the table started to hand us small plastic cup. We said we were supposed to receive actual glasses. The other lady said there wasn't anything 'special' on our tickets to receive the small tasting glass. Not sure why there would be when you read what they posted. Another lady scanned our tickets - again. According to all of the Eckley posts (photo attached) you were to receive a tasting glass as long as you purchased tickets ahead of time, which we did. Finally after back and forth between 4 different women we were given the small glass. It was a hastle and didn't need to be. The two older women didn't want to give them to us, but eventually did with hesitation. That was definitely not a good start to the event. We feel that everyone going should receive the small glass, especially when paying over $40 per ticket. There were probably a dozen breweries/wineries. Two food trucks and one table selling cookies. We were familiar with most of the breweries and were surprised there weren't more involved. We have a lot of great local-ish breweries. I understand it's their first time having this event. We would attend again if there's not the hastle with the glass and if there are more vendors there.

Nice, relatively small museum with an informative video describing the era. The "open" buildings…read morehave a clear front door that is locked. I was not on a guided tour as they were not available when I visited so that experience may be different. The photo I uploaded was from my iPhone placed against one of the windows. It came out great considering I couldn't see anything but the plates from outside looking in. There is a cellphone tour you can take to describe the buildings in the patch.

We stayed here because the Inn at Jim Thorpe, where we normally stay, was full. They also own The…read moreBroadway House. The guest house rooms are priced about the same as the rooms at The Inn but lack any sort of personal touch. Pros: Lovely Victorian House. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated.. Cons: There is a parking deck attached but it's to small to accommodate anything more than a compact car. Our Dodge Ram was way to big for it. The only other available parking is at one of two lots 2 or 3 blocks away. You then have a choice of walking with all your stuff or parking in front of the house while you unload, which blocks the already small and crowed streets of Jim Thorpe. There is supposedly an innkeeper on call 24/7, but we never saw her. The entrance door was wreathed in cobwebs, ashtrays on the front porch and back patios were overflowing and smelly. The supply of towels for the hot tub ran out every day we were there and were not replaced till the next day. Coffee is not available at the guest house, in the morning you have to walk the 4 blocks to get coffee or tea at the Inn. Yes, there's a coffee maker in each room but when I'm away I don't want to make my own coffee. The Inn stocks the bathroom with a nice selection of "green" products. The Broadway House does not. Our room wasn't made up until 4 in the afternoon. Check in time is 4, yet rooms weren't cleaned yet. I think that if we paid an amount comparable to what the Inn charges we should have received better services.

Do NOT ever stay here!!! Major health hazord! When you walk into this place, it knocks you back…read morewith the over powering aroma of rotting wood, mold and mildew!! No smell has ever entered my sinuses! BARf! When we checked out early after I woke up puking and had a fever And couldn't turn my head or use my shoulders, the lady at the desk was nice enough to refund our money we pre paid for the second night, then was so kind to tell us they have complaints about the smell all the time but only o. The first floor, so she was suprised to hear this from the 2nd floor, AFTEr the jerks booked us there like idiots! We had to cut our HONEYMOOn short due to my extreme case of pneumonia, and had to drive 10 hours home with my body shutting down on me. I finally came to life a bit today and called managment to let them know what happened... Do you think they called me back?! Heck friggen no! They made their money, what do they care?! Plus they know dang well what that place has going on there.. It's disgusting.. When I cough out the infection in my lungs it tastes exactly like what that rotting crap hole smelled like! (baaaahhh glah gag) makes my stomach turn to think Bout it. Anyway.. So pneumonia normally starts as a cold, goes to bronchitis and then turns into pneumonia... Not me! I was healthy and happy and went to bed after spraying the curtains n carpet with body spray.. Then woke up on my death bed.. 7 days later I can finally open my eyes, get my own clothes changed, and tonight we will see if I sweat the bed out 4 times. P.s. I'm a non smoker so no relations to that either! My doctor told me that the mold and mildew In that house is MORE the likely what caused this. I'm so disgusted at the thieves running this place and puting innocent peoples health at risk for a $120 .. Oh and 2 chocolate chip cookies... Friggen jerk offs. Trust me my message to managment was not a rant like this.. I was very polite! Still no response! RATS!
