I even referred my husband (then boyfriend) to their services even though he has been doing his own for years. He was pleased with the first year they did his taxes so we decided to use them again this year. This experience was less than acceptable. When we went to pick up our taxes the amount that was estimated for our return had changed drastically from what we were previously told. We emailed Kathy promptly regarding this concern to which she replied that there must have been something that had fallen off during importing them. We then emailed her 3 times following up for the correction to which she NEVER replied. My husband then called the office after having waited over a week for a reply from Kathy. Kathy wouldn't even speak to my husband on the phone and instead talked through the receptionist. Kathy claimed to not know of the issue he was referring to. This was impossible as she had already replied to one of his emails that had outlined very specifically our concerns. If you want someone who stands by their work and acts ethically, think twice before using the services provided by The Bookkeepers. We will NOT be going back and will be sure to tell our story to others in the area so they don't make the same mistake we did. Lesson learned. Professional companies are NOT always the way to go! If I could give them less than a 1 star rating I would because truthfully, that is what they deserve.

First off, this is in a big, brown building that's near some apartments on South Duff. The sign…read moreisn't huge, but I did drive past it once. It's a brick building, and it has private parking in the driveway. Parking is nice. The office itself has its own door once you go inside. The closest door to the parking lot will get you to their office as soon as you walk in. I called about an appointment right before tax time (bad timing on my part), but they were willing to answer a quick question via e-mail before I had my scheduled appointment date, so that's definitely nice service. Once I arrived there, everybody there was fantastic. The receptionist was really friendly, and even though I showed up 10 minutes early (just to make sure I was on-time), I was taken straight to the office to meet with my CPA (in this case, it was Dan Scoles). As bonus points for the receptionist, I wanted to make sure I had money to go downtown in Ames, and I asked for change for a dollar. They don't keep a cash register (or cash) there, but she dug in her purse and ended up getting me quarters for my dollar. I love that she went out of her way to help. Dan was completely forward and upfront about what I needed to do, and he even printed me off some information. He seemed extremely knowledgeable about what he was doing, and he offered suggestions about things I hadn't thought about doing. He was very down-to-Earth, and he explained my options for things - and also explained what he thought would be the best option. I came in with a list of pre-written questions, and he answered almost all of them without being prompted - just by himself when explaining what he'd recommend and what should be done. My only complaint is that I couldn't pay for my service at the time I had it done. I particularly dislike having bills sent in the mail, and I'd rather just pay right up-front. However, they'll be sending a bill in the mail for me instead.

I'm so accustomed to waiting 2 hours to be seen and have my taxes done, but this time even with my interest income, student loan interest payments, moving expenses, NY state and Iowa State filing, she did out married filing jointly taxes in about 20-30 minutes. The fee is really reasonably considering the complexity, accuracy, and timeliness. I recommend calling in advance and scheduling an appointment to meet with her to prepare your taxes. Ann herself is really nice, welcoming and I highly recommend her. She is fully licensed CPA and professional. I'm always on the look out for a great tax preparer and avoid the big chains whenever possible because those types tend to hire seasonal tax preparers who don't have CPA licenses.
