But, Fairfax has a great grocery store, their dollar general is neat organized and staffed. So if you only buy once a month. Going up to Greg's Smoke Shop in Fairfax is the best option. The rest are a waste of time and money. For 22.00 I can get a lb of tobacco and 2 boxes of tubes. That is 2 cartons. Now where can you go to spend only 22.00 on for me a months worth of cigarettes.

I like this store. I remember it from the 1960s. (The store dates back several decades before…read morethat, even.) Back in the 60s it was a busy general store whose mainline business was groceries. I was in it many times and even worked there occasionally stocking shelves, carrying out groceries to customers' cars, and so on. The store was known for good meat, and people came from 50 miles away to buy meat there. The people who have it now have restored a lot (with loving care) and I'm very glad to see it. I stopped by once or twice as an adult when I was traveling (I live more than a thousand miles away now) and enjoyed seeing it and I bought a few things in-person and later online. For me it is the greatest historical landmark because I was familiar with it as a child. I hope that someday it will expand how many kinds of merchandise it has (when I was young it had farm clothes, a great many shoes all along a wall, meat, groceries, drugs, gifts, a gift-wrapping service, and greeting cards). There used to be another big brick building a short block south on the same side of the street; that one was a furniture store and mortuary. Directly across the street from the Mercantile was the hardware store.
