I went to the school and arranged for a different teacher and all was well for the rest of the year. So....what did the school do this year? They assigned him to the same teacher that had given up on him in preschool. Nice move! Of course, I got them to change his teacher. Of course I'm speaking of Hickory Grove Elementary School.

Located between SouthPark and Dilworth neighborhoods, this Middle School is in a prime spot. Now I…read morecan't review the school itself since I am way past middle school age... but I come here often to use the school's track. Usually in the mornings. There are other fitness groups that use the track F3 and other running groups, but usually everyone is pretty nice (especially at 5am). The track itself is not lit (lighted), but the streetlights from Runnymede give you enough ambient light to run on the track early on. Just try not to wear all black - unless you are going for a ninja look or trying to scare someone. Aside from the track - there are plenty of parking spaces and access to the fields. A lot of times I see the F3 guys rolling around in the grass, or doing suicide runs on the basketball courts. I'm just happy I actually got out of bed at that hour to run.

My son attended the TK(transitional kindergarten) program which is mostly 5 year olds with late birthdays that miss the CMS cutoff for kindergarten and he really loved it and learned so much within the school year. The classroom consisted of 12-15 students with a teacher and assistant with a very structured curriculum, uniform dress and chapel attendance mid week. The tuition is very affordable, if you don't want to send a lunch daily they provide lunch for an additional fee. The school has TK-8th grade and is growing yearly. My only concern is the after school program which is not very structured and when dealing with 5 year olds structure is very important, so if you have smaller kids attending, I would advise finding an alternative for after school care.

From the moment we went to Open House and visited the campus, we knew this was the best school for our son. We are so thankful to have found Back Creek. Not only do students learn facts, both academic and spiritual, they also learn how to defend their beliefs - which is so important in our society today! Every teacher has been so caring and wonderful. We thank God daily for Back Creek Christian Academy and the opportunity to have our son in such a wonderful school!

Oakhurst Elementary was closed in 2011 due to CMS budget cuts and later reopened as a CMS…read moreAdministrative Center. In March of 2013 CMS announced a $400 million education upgrade and plans to reopen Oakhurst Elementary as a K-8 STEAM partial magnet school in time for the 2015 - 2016 school year. The core focus at the newly branded Oakhurst STEAM Academy will be on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math... aka STEAM. Since its been given the "partial magnet" status, there is a percentage of first priority available seats to children living within the outlined neighborhood boundaries which include Chantilly, Amity Gardens, Commonwealth Morningside, Echo Hills, and Oakhurst. All other children attending Oakhurst Elementary will have to enter via a lottery. The official school mascot is the Oakhurst Rockets and the school colors will be light blue and light orange. Oakhurst STEAM Academy will feature a Science and Robotic Labs, Lego Walls, a even a 3D Printer!!! The re-opening of Oakhurst Elementary is a very welcome change in the neighborhood and will serve as the staging ground for CMS to improve the education of the next generation of Charlotteans :)
