The Y is where I go when I want to get my kids involved in something new. Their book of available classes are extensive and have a wide variety of classes to choose from. The membership fees are reasonable given the wide range of available services, including a free wellness assessment with a personal trainer who will assess your goals and advise you in your workouts to achieve those goals. This location has completely renovated the facilities, so I feel the money put in is being used to better the building for all to use. The staff is very friendly and helpful in whatever questions you may have. They have a kid's room for the little ones to hang out in while you want to workout as well, and for $9/ month on top of membership, it's unlimited and puts your mind at ease that the kids are close and safe while you focus on your workout. My oldest son does Martial Arts here with an instructor brought in from outside of the Y and he is kind, informative and seems to genuinely want his students to learn the material. I would recommend this place if you have kids and want to be in a one stop shop for the whole family to find something they enjoy. read more

My kids won't swim in the pool here because the life guards enforce so many ridiculous rules. Just so you know I pee in the pool every time the lifeguard cites an "unwritten " rule. read more

This is a very nice Y. They are at the tail end of remodeling it, so it should be better than ever. They have a couple large pools, a huge room for aerobic classes, and a decent weight room. I've brought my daughter a few times to the daycare and they were very attentive and nice. This Y is also a member of the away Y program, so a membership here will get you into a bunch of other Y's. The only downside to this Y compared to others is that you have to pay for the yoga and pilates classes and they require advanced registration. I like to drop-in on such classes. read more

We come here for the kids activities. I am not a member if this gym. Why? They're not open 24 hours and they're expensive for what I use the gym for. The kids activities would be a lot cheaper if we were members but we don't do activities all year long so it's just cheaper to pay the high non member price of the activities. read more

Great hours... if you work day shift. Facility closes at 10:30pm and pool closes at 9:30 pm. The senior/middle management has poor communication skills: if repairs are being made or hours are being changed, there might be a paper sign up in a highly papered bulletin board where it is easy to miss. It heavily caters to family with children and does provide subsidized memberships and childcare. This means that as a single adult, you will be paying almost as much as a family membership ($53 currently for a single). Popular programs cost extra, like Master's swim club. Well, that used to be popular. Now it's one of the worst in the city. If you want to do a spin class, you have to arrive at least 30 minutes early to sign up to reserve a spot. I don't know why they can't get more classes going. Ditto for a yoga class I tried on a Sunday--filled to the edges with some people turned away. Like other reviewers note, the building is old. This is most problematic in the bathrooms, which generally smell. I go there because its close and because of the large pool. They've made an effort to keep the pool cleaner, which I appreciate, but they stopped changing the water yearly, which is just bad health policy. They don't enforce rules, which means the water quality suffers, and so they use a lot of chlorine. in 2017 there was a slew of mechanical problems with the pool, so it was frequently closed. There are a lot of machines upstairs, with a bank of tvs and music overhead as well, so it can be quite noisy. There's a nice open area to work out on a mat with more free-style equipment. Overall, I'd say it's a place that caters to families with kids that want to use exercise equipment and do kids sports (but not swim team). read more

I can't actually write a review about equipment, locker rooms, programs, because I've tried several times over the last few months to merely talk to someone who knows what they are doing. My first attempt for a free trial came from a card at Carbone Cancer Clinic. When I walked in for a tour, the gentleman (kid) tossed the card away, gave me a quick tour of a very outdated uncomfortably designed facility. It's so chopped up and dim, it looks like an office building conversion. At the end of the tour, my guide said I could sign up for a one week trial. I said I'd think about it. A couple weeks later I found a full brochure about the "Live Strong Program" for cancer patients. I had to leave a message. No one called me for three weeks, just to tell me I'd have to talk with a different person. I left another message. Another bunch of days passed, and I received another voice mail telling me where the location of the programs actually are. Someone just called me a coupe days ago from the Middleton location letting me know the program was starting. Huh? I've rarely, in 46 years of owning my own highly successful business offering caring customer service have I experienced such a lack luster, blaze' attitude toward anyone, let alone when a cancer patient merely wants to try to use the water facilities for one day. Oh boo. I wish I were back in Sun Prairie at the cheery Y, but my transportation is limited. Thank you. read more

I can let go that the building is old. I can let go that there is only one squat rack and not enough weightlifting equipment. I can even let go that every time you go into the locker room you feel like you're going to catch some kind of flesh eating bacteria. What i can forgive is senior management that openly treats their employees horribly which inevitably means that negativity is filtered down to members, particularly in the way they treat children. The Y in Dane county has become obsessed in its' focus on only one segment of the population and in doing so has ignored families and is missing a great opportunity in teaching a new generation to get fit and away from the TV and tablet. Until the Dane County YMCA program learns how to run a professional, not for profit business that truly cares about its' community and members I would suggest get your workout by running away from here....fast. read more
