His passion for cheese and offering to share a taste of anything we wanted outside of the norm was very cool. If I lived in the area i'd make this shop a regular spot to score my cheese.

This is the "mother" of all cheese shops (see what I did there?). I'm partial to Comte, and they have a number of options, depending on your taste and price pain threshhold. For the local favourite St Marcellin, they ask when you'll eat it, and then poke several rounds to find one that will be perfectly ripe when you want it. They also do an excellent truffled Brillat-Savarin. For me, this is a different experience to top cheese shops in Paris. There, if you only speak basic French, you are looked at somewhere between pity and disgust, and get the sense that they are only taking your money because they have to. Here, they were smiling and friendly, helpful about sizes, and proved that you don't need a lot of language skills to buy some amazing cheeses. Highly recommend!

Sechons (paired with dried fruit) 5. Fougerus (paired with marmalade) I enjoyed both meats, but really enjoyed the creamy Fougerus cheese with the marmalade. The selection is quite remarkable for such a small shop. The other fresh dairy products such as yogurts and chantilly are delicious. But the best thing about this shop, without question, was the friendly and knowedgable staff. During our time in Montchat we received an education every time we bought cheese. Not only did they make great recommendations, but usually recommended several within the same class of cheese, providing the provenance and production details. I especially like their jambon persillé (ham and parsley aspic terrine), a regional dish that is ubiquitous in Burgundy, as well as their duck liver paté. They also have a selection of very tasty saucisson (dry cured sausage) that they will slice for you. Finally, in the mornings they offer freshly-roasted chickens, but be sure to get there early, because they go quick, and once they're out, they're out. The only thing that would make this place better is having Bresse chicken. But I guess you can't win them all.
