I wanted over to the central part of Frankfurt one evening and walked around. I got thirsty and…read moredecided to pop into Spicelands. This grocery store is wonderful. It has a ton of food from Asia, the Middle East, and even the Caribbean. I felt like I was in Toronto! I saw a bottle of chrysanthemum tea drink and got it. The cashier was friendly and helpful as I continued to figure out how to use Euros. I love the selection of foods. I wasn't hungry. Otherwise, I would have had a samosa or more! (2)
This is where I do the majority of my shopping in Frankfurt. I love coming into Spicelands and…read moreperusing around looking for all the things I need... and don't need! The market has a very Indian focus, but also carries a variety of goods from the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East. You can get cheap young coconuts, amla berries, avocados, and even fresh curry leaves (which are surprisingly difficult to find in Frankfurt) here. But be aware- the curry leaves go fast once a shipment arrives! I stock up on them and freeze them when I can find them. If you're carrying other bags into Spicelands, you must leave them at the front counter. Not really a surprise given the area of the city the shop is in, but this may be a nuisance to many customers. Try to make Spicelands your first stop on your shopping around town if possible! Not only does Spicelands carry every spice you could possibly need (seriously never go to Rewe to buy overpriced spices... go here!), they also sell incense, Indian cooking accessories, and beers from all around the world. If you can't find something in Spicelands, just ask the staff and they will helpfully assist you or let you know where you can get it or tell you when the next order will arrive.

Where in the hell has this place been all my life!?!!? How did I not know this place existed??…read more I pass by this area all the time, but often avoid this street for some odd reason. Yesterday, in a mad effort to avoid the Zeil during Christmas shopping (ok- to be fair, I had a panic attack as I'm claustrophobic), I ended up on this street briefly. I saw a Brazilian flag and about freaked. I love shops like this. Or discovering new restaurants. I went inside to discover it was a Brazilian shop with loads of food, merchandise, etc from the beautiful South American country. They also have goods from other countries that way. What a freaking find. This place has corn, acai juice pads and even jams, Brazilian beers, masa harina, and much, much more. A phenomenal find here in Frankfurt and one I'm sure I'll be heading back to often.

Mix Markt offers all kinds of imported goods not available at German chain grocers: Armenian cognac, Polish, Czech, and Russian beers, kvas, kosichka / chechil cheese, tvorog (for making syrniki), caviar, frozen pelmeni, specialty meats and produce... the list goes on. Their prices are also very competitive - almost equivalent to the prices I remember when I visited Russia.
Its as if an American figured out how to export an entire military "Shopette" into a german mall!…read more Ha ha ha! They have everything and is stocked better than a Shoppette in my opinion. However, the price gouging is incredible! These poor germans are paying three times as much for a box of cereal that is found in an american grocery store. Its like a "designer" food shop. You want it, so you'll pay the 300% mark-up. They have cereal, candy, beer, popcorn, chocolate, soda, etc.. I think they even have things you can't find in a typical American military market! Just go and see for yourself, just be willing to pay and arm and a leg!
