Finally, Turkish food that's not döner!…read more We had to go to Ikea and instead of having Swedish meatballs like we always do when we go to Ikea, we decided to venture out a bit. With a little help from Yelp, we found Köz Urfa. I'm thinking I will find more occasions to go to Ikea now because of this delightful Turkish restaurant. This restaurant is HUGE! And there's a cave area for more intimate dining. We arrived a little after 5pm, so the place wasn't very full up. The various kebaps are neatly displayed in large refrigerated glass cases. The dining room was bright and clean, and the staff is super inviting and friendly. I ordered the Urfa kebap while the hubby ordered the Adana kebap. I believe the difference was his was spicy and mine was not. For 11€ per plate, you get a lot of food. The meat is laid on top of a half and half bulgar and rice. You also get like 5 different sides and some grilled veggies, as well as a side of flatbread. I was not able to finish my plate, but I guess next time I'll come hungrier. I'm very much looking forward to coming back. There are so many dishes to try, plus all the dessert!

They have bread and rolled options, I went with the bread and it was huge. The bread was soft, slightly toasted and warm. The chicken inside was really good as was the sauce, my only real complaint was wanting more sauce, more evenly distributed. We got a few lamb Döner kebabs at Bey Kebap to go on the last day we were in Altona and took them back home to eat. They traveled well (not far from Ottensen) and still looked good when unpacked. I can report that they are in fact quite good, with a very large amount of meat, and plenty of fresh veggies. The sauce was also tasty, with a good amount of garlic! Truly a delicious Döner! Since leaving Berlin in 1993, it's hard to get over the price increases (DM 3,00 in Kreuzberg back in the day), but Bey Kebap still represents a good value - way better than any fast food outlet!

I've had mixed grills here and they were very good, but what sets this place apart (and please…read moredon't confuse it with Gazi Antep, which is on the same block) are both the döner kebab and something most westerners never think of trying, the işkembe çorbası, also known as 'panzensuppe' or tripe soup. A brief word on the döner kebab (which I get in the dürüm döner form, where the bread wrap is thin like a flour tortilla): for some reason, it is, for me, the most consistently satisfying rendering of the classic German version of the classic Turkish kebab sandwich. The combination of meats and veggies and flavorings has always been perfectly balanced. But now for the something remarkable, the işkembe çorbası. Everywhere else I've had it, and I do mean everywhere, there is far less meat, and the flavor tends to be way more dishwater. The işkembe here is loaded with both substance and flavor. You can get it with garlic, which means a spoonful of a garlic sauce, and then add red pepper flakes ('urfa biber'). You can also indulge in free veggies (like onions and whole peppers) on the side. Not only is it the best işkembe çorbası you can find, but this is one of the most delicious and satisfying soups you'll ever experience. Köz Antep is on a nice, leafy, out of the way street; it is close to the 'Dom' fun fair; it is a bit of a walk from public transportation (S-St. Pauli, or the Reeperbahn), but for me that walk whets the appetite something enormous.
