I was expecting to conned into a viewing of broken washing machines piled up in somebody's old garage. However, Spa being the home of a luxury thermal spa, there was always a market for doing the laundry of all those towels and fluffy dressing gowns generated by spa guests. And so this museum aims to describe the flip side of Spa and its trade. It does it admirably, too. You get guided round the museum by a volunteer who is guaranteed to be shiny-eyed and passionate about the subject - and if you didn't enter the museum a washing machine nerd, you are guaranteed to leave as one. Every room shows models of people doing their laundry through the ages, from medieval times to the present day. There is a room dedicated to irons and presses - you can even admire a tie shaped metal object that you side ties on to for steaming - and another to different sorts of mangles and crucifixes made out of clothes pegs. It's all too easy to mock this very obscure-sounding museum. But it is a collection that has been lovingly assembled over 11 years, and it well deserves a visit. Young children will love it too. Oh, and it's housed in Europe's oldest casino building, a setting that doesn't quite chime with the humble theme.

You can feel the atmosphere heightening as you walk from the car park, along the gorge and into the town (not as far as it sounds). There are shops & stalls all with twinkling shimmering lights, enhancing the magic. There is traditional wooden toys, candles like you've never seen, crafts, knitwear, music boxes, jewellery, jams & chutneys, stained glass and food !!! Cheeses, gingerbread, chocolate, chestnuts & German meats. There are plenty of stalls selling food and, of course, Glühwein. Also many restaurants to eat in or have a coffee. It is busy & vibrant with local music, carols and horse & cart rides. There is so much to do here, there is a castle, a beautiful church, little bridges over the running water, museums, glass works, shops, shops, shops & shops. A wonderful exhibition of over sized, papier-mâché, grotesque, fairy story characters. Everywhere there is wonderful christmas displays & lighting. You would think that the locals would get fed up with it all but not a bit of it. They are happy, friendly and helpful. Park in the Burgau car park, over 300 spaces, and next to the glass works showroom, it is a short walk into the town.

This medieval village here in this beautiful valley has it all. A compact town center, a great location by the river. Good food. And of course a castle: the chateau de Durbuy. There is plenty of parking. A big space just across the river and a bigger lot (with shuttle service) a bit outside. But during Covid-19 it wasn't a problem to find a spot. The small town center is easy to walk, maybe a bit slippery if it's rainy. Lots of historic buildings, wonderful architecture. The chateau isn't that huge, but looks amazing, sitting there right by the river. Besides the nice streets and lanes it's also worth to walk along the river. There are lots of shops. Souvenirs, arts & crafts. But nothing that amazed us. But the food on the other hand was pretty amazing. The best food during our stay in Belgium we've had here in Durbuy. At the "Le fou du Roy", just in the town center. Even though a bit rainy, we enjoyed the village very much. A fantastic daytrip. And even maybe because of the rain and light fog it looked even more magical. Really a highlight on that years Road Trip. Loved it.

The town, or townspeople, states that Durbuy is the smallest town in the world. i don'tknow about…read morethat because I've seen smaller places but it is one of the prettiest small towns in the world! There are things to do in town, but visiting the chateau isn't one of them because it is privately owned. The best thing is just wandering around the very ancient town with your camera, clicking away and just enjoying the scenery. There are some really good restaurants there, which is a bonus! I would recommend avoiding the place in the summer since it is crawling with tourists. Autumn is nice, especially when the hunting season rolls around and you can get some wild boar to eat. Delicious! Also, I prefer the autumny decorations with the pumpkins and such. This is a nice town to just relax.
