Halo Halo is a traditional Filipino snack/dessert we grew up with cooking us down from the heat of our motherland, the Philippine Islands. It's the Filipino version of America's ice cream treat and a more sophisticated hawaiian shaved ice concocted with evaporated or condensed milk, sweetened beans, leche flan, crunchy flattened dried rice (pinipig) to give it that crunch and Filipino flavored ice cream. Ben's came highly recommended by my dad and his girlfriend who was taken here by my dad's friend escaping a funeral in the hottest part of the summer. This place lived up to the hype! It is air conditioned, very clean and inviting. They have different types of halo halo to choose from varying from Ben's original traditional famous halo halo to spicy with their Spicy Winter Halo Halo, corn (mais Con Yelo), Macapuno (Sweet Coconut Strands) and even a unique take on sweet and salty with their salted egg version of Salty Summer. For an average of about $2 each, these icy treats are a must find here in the town of Silang. Ben's is located in the heart of Silang Town Proper about a block down the main big Catholic church of Candelaria. Management has a sign up protecting their employees from customer abuse which made me very good inside for the level of care the owners exercise in protecting and caring for their employees. My sister ordered their cucumber water which we found to be extremely sweet. We self served ourselves with water from their self serve water station and poured half of the cucumber water in a glass and poured regular water in it to dilute the sweetness to taste. It was very good once we added more water. The mango juice I ordered came from a can and the brand they have on hand is quite delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed my Spicy Winter Halo Halo. The heat from the hot Thai chili peppers compliments the sweetness of the halo halo which is literally translated as "mix mix". There are other halo halo joints around Silang but at first taste, this became an instant favorite. The ice is very fine, not crunchy and it reminded me of Japanese Kakigori which is crushed fine ice. I highly recommend stopping by and fulfilling your halo halo urge here!

*Note: This is a 4.5 Star review…read more Since the past weeks have been very, very hot and humid, I've been craving for cold desserts. My new favorite dessert at the moment is Bingsu! While I was down South, my friends and I decided that it would be great to end the night with something icy to cool down. We actually weren't sure where to get Bingsu but, thankfully, we found this hidden gem at Molito. Bingsu is basically the Korean version of shaved ice or halo halo. Imagine soft, icy snow with condensed milk poured on top then add any toppings of your liking: from mochi to fresh fruit to brownies! We arrived almost to closing time but they still allowed us to order. We decided to try the regular size of the Injeolmi, Mix Berry Yogurt, and Mango (of course!). There was a bit of wait since we were the last order and they ran out of ingredients and had to prep for more. So, we waited for about 15-20 minutes. While we were waiting, we decided to hangout in their "Snow Room"! Yes, they have a small room in the café where "snow" falls from the ceiling. Pretty cool making snowballs! :) After hanging out in the snow, our bingsu orders arrived. Among the 3 that we ordered, the best was actually the Injeolmi! It's was the most traditional one and it was also the most flavorful. It had the right amount of sweetness and it was packed with ingredients. The Mix Berry Yogurt was tart and had dried fruit which added the sweetness. The Mango Bingsu was a winner. But, I always ended up going back for more spoonfuls of the Injeolmi! The one common factor for all the Bingsu we ate though is that the ice was sooo fine, fluffy and creamy. One of the best quality bingsu I've tried so far! I will definitely come back when I'm in the South again. I hope I'll be able to try their Cheese Bingsu next time! :)

The snow room in the cafe was a pretty fun touch. The desserts they serve were certainly fun and just the goodness we needed. We ordered the chocolate snow ice, the small one, certainly, it was enough for two to share as a dessert. I'm used to the Taiwanese snow ice and this is certainly something new. Reminded me of the snow ice, but the ice was really flakey and soft, super fun for the palette. The chocolate wasn't overly sweet and was just plain enjoyable. We were already eyeballing the menu for our next visit and scoping out the other tables. It all looks so good!! If you need a cool pick me up... This should certainly do the trick! We hope to visit again soon and try everything eventually :) A la cuisine! Stay hungry my friends!

After a day of site seeing, hiking, shopping or after a great meal, what a pleasant dessert to have and it's healthy for you. The area also produces great coffee and pineapple so you can pick up their other pies as well. Although I haven't tried any other pie, that'll give me something to come back for. This happens all the time - Expect to wait, when we got there, there were about 4 other parties waiting for their hot, fresh out of the oven pies. And speaking of hot, you can jump on the Skyway and be back in Alabang just in time to have them - still nice and hot. Now there are other wannabes but I caution you on buying their pies because of the lack of coconut meat. Take a look at my pics and you'll see the cascading goodness of layers upon layers of fresh coconut. This goes oh so well with the local barako coffee.

Luckily, I noticed recently that some food brands have been making their way to the "pasalubong centers" now sprouting all over the Santa Rosa road to Tagaytay Ridge. Original Buko Pie did one better and opened its own store/baking center here; when you queue (if you do), you can be sure the batches are freshly made. Turnover is seriously - and justifiably - high. The pie is flaky and buttery, but not too much so; the filling has a certain bite, and the right amount of young, sweet, chewy coconut to keep you going. I dare you to have only one slice, warmed gently in a toaster oven, a la mode, or with a sprinkling of cheese on top.

That aside, I do get occasional cravings -- days when I just really need something sweet to cap off a big meal or a reward after a long day. Purple Oven is the perfect place to satisfy my dessert desires. I love the Chocolate Campfire cake, it's rich, moist, chocolate cake that topped with marshmallow icing. MARSHMALLOW ICING! I suppose you could take a slice and sandwich it between graham crackers and call it a smore. For days when you just need a little sweetness, try the double chocolate chip cookie, choclate macademia cookie or chocolate dipped cookie (where literally have the cookie is dipped in chocolate). They're pricey at P60/cookie but they're a little bigger than my palm and the chocolate chips ooze out when you bite into the cookie. There is no scrimping on ingredients in Purple Oven. The products here would also make great presents. They're hefty and have the wow factor because of their packaging. The chocolate crinkles, lemon squares, brownies and revel bars would be great to share at the office while the cakes would be awesome to bring home to family or to impress in-laws. Enjoy!

There's a sign that states where the line starts with poles guiding people as to where they should be falling in line. Like numerous others, I didn't see the sign. People started falling in line by the window, which is where I was sitting. I eventually moved my seat. Now, I totally understand what the hype is all about. They offer fruits, sauces, and crunch options that other frozen yogurt companies do not offer. While I was falling in line, someone was writing down what I wanted to order. I was impressed that she upsold me. I was asked which option I wanted. I opted for a cup or tub. Then she asked if I wanted a medium or a large. She didn't ask if I wanted a small, medium, or large. I'm thankful I ordered a medium! The couple behind me had a slight misunderstanding because the female ordered small for them to share. He didn't sound happy with her choice. Eventually, she changed the order to a larger size. I knew that I wanted mango. I am thankful that the employee suggested the Biscoff crunch and sauce. Oh my gosh, I slowly ate my yogurt.
