Beautiful mature gardens make for a lovely walk on a sunny, or in our case, a misty day. Heritage trees are many years old and stunningly high. Flowers and flowering bushes of all kinds bloom throughout the seasons. There is a large rose garden. A Camellia area has lots of bushes. These were smaller gardens than the others in Australia and New Zealand. I had taken an Uber out to see the Steepest Street in the World, but walked back to downtown so I could pass through the gardens. The 75 acre Dunedin Botanic Garden is New Zealand's first botanic garden, created in 1863. The Garden is home to 6,800 plant species and several native songbirds, like -bellbirds, wood pigeons and tui. Some of the collection gardens include roses, herbaceous plants, perennial borders, a rock garden, New Zealand native plants and a dell with more than 3,000 rhododendrons. The New Zealand Native plant collection is the cultivation of rare and endangered native plant species. There's also a collection from temperate climates of North Asia, the South, Central and North Americas, Southern Africa, the Himalayas and the Mediterranean. There are posted maps at the entrances. The main path is paved and wide, with smaller winding wandering through the gardens leading to the various collections. Entry is free. Open from dawn to dust. A small cafe is on the property. Not sure about parking since I walked in. read more

Absolutely fantastic garden and highly recommend the green house in the center of it, lots of cactus plants and succulents inside, grab some snacks and make a picnic in the park on a sunny day! There's a little pond with ducks too. If you have kids there's a tractor/train ride that goes around. read more

Such a great garden to stroll around! Wish we had more time to cover the whole place! Due to limited time, we only got to enjoy the rock garden, green house and the housed in desert plants next to the tropical plants. We were so impressed by the beautiful landscape design mixing rocks and various ground cover, bushes, trees next to the creek and bridge. read more

Beautiful,relaxing,fun. Love feeding ducks here and going up to see the birds. Would recommend to anyone coming to visit Dunedin.

As someone who considers Dunedin home, despite being away far more than being around, I feel incredibly lucky to have a resource like this on my doorstep whenever I am back. Great place for a wander around the many paths, to see the birds or to check out the various plantings from around the world. There's also a cafe in the gardens (which may not have the best coffee in Dunedin but the views are pretty awesome), a Japanese garden, amazing rhododendron & rose plantings, and even an area where live entertainment plays now and again.
