On a sticky humid day in sweltering 33 degree heat, the last thing you want to do is stand in front of a grill for hours in the sun with heat blasting on your back and heat blasting in your face. But that is exactly what the brave men and women of Dundas West Fest did all Saturday. From Lansdowne to Shaw, vendors poured their blood, sweat, tears, and more sweat into providing all types of goodies for us festival-goers.
I was actually quite impressed with the length of this festival. Google Maps informs me that it is almost 2km of activity all along Dundas West. Many of the restaurants set up small cooking/serving stations out front to attract people with $5-$10 versions of signature dishes: grilled sardines from Churrasqueira Do Sardinha, pan-fried pierogies from The Saucy Pierogi, Thai iced tea from Sukho Thai, freshly shucked oysters from some bar on a corner (sorry, don't remember the name). You also get the added bonus of bringing the food into the actual restaurants and enjoying it with some much-needed AC.
It wasn't all about food though. There were many other vendors that sold merchandise, informed people about good causes, and performers doing their thing. Props to the guys playing rock music in leather jackets and not getting a heat stroke. I'm a perpetually hungry person, so I mostly paid attention to the food. Though I did get to grab a couple of cool tank tops from a hipster little tent called 1% Talent.
Overall, it was a good time and a great way to kill a couple of hours. I wouldn't put aside a day in my calendar every year to go to it, but I'd definitely consider coming again on a nice afternoon.
