I was pleasantly surprised when I moved here and was told there is mandatory recycling in my neighborhood (by mandatory they mean everyone gets a bin, sadly not that they enforce trash separation). Glass must be taken to one of the many drop-off locations, but it's mixed stream recycling for plastics, paper and metal (ridiculously easy for the lazy). All recycled materials can also be taken to the drop-off locations, but must be separated. I'm also doing a DIY remodel of my house and whatever can't be taken to Habitat for Humanity Restore gets hauled to the landfill. You can take a whopping 1 ton of building materials or yard waste per month at no extra charge (likely to prevent assholes from dumping their trash in the desert).
