if you want the honest truth, please read below. I will also be addressing this interaction through…read morethe appropriate professional dental channels over Virginia . This was one of the most frustrating and disrespectful dental experiences I've ever had, and it started before I even arrived. I called the morning of my visit because I was in tooth pain. A dentist personally scheduled me for 3:00 PM since I was coming from work in DC. Shortly after, the front desk called back saying they don't actually have 3:00 PM available and that the dentist "open books" and doesn't see the calendar. She tried to move me to 11:30 AM while I was at work. When I explained I couldn't, I was told I could still come at 3:00 PM but might have to wait. I agreed because I was in pain. "A little" turned into an hour and a half. When I was finally seen, I was then told they might not be able to treat me that day and would instead put in a "plan." They sent in the woman who Handles insurance and I was told nothing could be done because they needed to submit my insurance for approval -- despite the fact that I've been to this office multiple times and have paid my copay without issue. The only time there was ever a payment issue was my very first visit, which was due to incorrect information given by the office and was resolved. I have since returned and paid without any problems. Yet I was told they didn't want the "same problems like last time," which is implying what? This was confusing and upsetting. I was also told 3:00 PM is "late in the day" and that my procedures would not be possible because the doctor has "other patients." If that's the case, why offer and confirm that appointment time? ALL Patients deserve the same care regardless of time. I told this woman I am in pain, and she says "all it says you're getting is a crown and possible RTC." Excuse me? As if you know what pain I am feeling. At that point, it started to feel discriminatory. As a young Black woman, I felt judged and treated as if my pain did not matter, despite being a returning, and paying patient. I left in tears and completely disregarded. Not everyone, but This woman in that office has serious issues with communication, insurance handling, and respect for patients. After multiple visits, negligence, and repeated billing confusion, I will not be returning.

I am writing an updated review for this office. I had been a patient of Dr. Amirreza Rafaat, DDS…read morefor the last 3 years found out he sold his practice but that the new dentist is great. Being that I only come for cleanings I decided to keep my appointment and come for my cleaning. Let me share some background of my oral health. I was an Invisalign patient of Dr. Rafatt which made my oral hygiene A+. I had 1 small cavity filled about 4 years ago and when I got that cavity I was not brushing my teeth at night time (guilty). After that, I made sure to brush twice a day and with Invisalign I became a crazy flosser. Since my x-rays are done once a year, I did have anxiety about cavities BECAUSE I had an implant put in for a missing molar and my fabulous prosthodontist warned me about cavities forming in-between the fake tooth and real ones because people don't floss well. I made sure to floss with string, floss with water, and brush with my Phillips sonic care toothbrush twice a day to ensure I keep my teeth as healthy as possible. All of this to say I was SHOCKED when this new woman dentist told me I have 2 cavities. I wish I would have listened to my gut and ran out as soon as I sat in the chair to get them filled. PLEASE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE, I BEG YOU. I should have known better and I should have WAITED. I am the kind of person that wants to get medical procedures over with so they are not looming over me. When I was walking out of my cleaning with the disbelief that I had 2 cavities in bottom right side molars, I was scheduling my appointment thinking it would be in a couple weeks and they had a following AM available. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO MY GUT AND SCHEDULED FOR LATER. I HAVE SO MANY REGRETS, I want to cry every time I think of this story but I hope that in sharing my experience, it can save someone from unnecessary fillings that are debated to not been good for you to begin with. I was leaving for a trip so I decided to get it over with. I came in the following day and sat in the chair, I asked the dentist photograph the cavities because it's really hard for me to believe I have them. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. As soon as she put a bite block in my mouth I got wicked anxiety and wanted to leave so bad but I thought it was just the block, so I had it taken out and she went ahead with the procedure. Finally, when the dentist was done with me, I was trying on my retainers, she walked out of the room and when I was asking about the photos, the assistants couldn't explain it to me so they went to get her and SHE HAD LEFT. The office offered to schedule me to come speak to the dentist. The more I think about it, the more I feel this is fishy. My trusted dentist sold his practice, a new dentist comes in and first day she meets me all of the sudden I have CAVITIES?! you've got to be kidding me. GET A SECOND OPINION. I DID get a second opinion. I sent my x-rays to my prosthodontist PRAYING that he agreed that I had cavities where they were filled so that I would feel better for getting them. I did not tell him that I had them filled, I just gave him the teeth numbers that this dentist said I had cavities and asked him to look and give me his opinion. His opinion, to my detriment, is that he does not see any cavities ON JUST XRAY REVIEW. Granted, he did not have the ability to do a clinical in person review. I am absolutely heart broken about this, it feels like I was violated in a way I have never experienced before. Now, I have to live with these fillings in my mouth that in my hearts of hearts I believe I did not need.

I don't think this has always been the case, but New Horizons now let's you book your appointments online which is SO convenient. Also, I arrived at my appointment a bit early and was actually seen right away. I also had a new hygienist today, Renee, who was GREAT! She had so much energy but was also so knowledgeable and helpful. Finally, although I appreciate Dr. Estwani, there was a new dentist in the place of the usual Friday dentist and she was really wonderful (I unfortunately don't remember her name). Seemed like she paid extra attention and was also extremely friendly. Other than that, office was clean and filled with lots of modern tech as always.

This office is a 30 minute drive form my house but I continued to come because of their technology and amenities. There is a TV above each dental chair and the chairs have a vibrating massage to help relax you during your cleanings. (-) - The front staff used to be a lot friendlier a couple years back. Recently I notice the staff is younger, impatient, and rude. They are the reason I am no longer going to make the 30 minute drive to come here. They have been impatient when I have tried to make appointments and needed to reschedule. If they offered a date that did not work for me, it seemed like I was bothering them or wasting their time - isn't this there job? I can't be the only patient to ever have to reschedule. Life happens! - Technology and Communication - This dental office OVER COMMUNICATES regarding appointment reminders. Not only do I received several emails, text messages and voicemails reminding me of my appointment leading up to the date, but NOW if I do not call them back to confirm, they apparently up and cancel your appointment without warning. In the past, it has been a nuisance to receive ALL of these reminders but I would just ignore them and then show up to my appointment on time without issue. The same thing happened this past week, however, this time when I showed up for my appointment, the young brunette at the front desk snapped at me as soon as I checked in: Rude Brunette at front desk: "You need to give us a better phone number bc we have been trying to reach you about your appointment and since we never heard from you, we cancelled your appointment but you are luck that we have an opening, just sit and wait a few minutes" Me - taken aback by the rude greeting: "I have always received many calls from this office, the voicemails have never said that my appointment would be cancelled if I don't respond. Not only that but I received both an email and a text message 60 minutes ago telling me that my appointment is confirmed and that you look forward to seeing me today" Nice Blonde at front desk: "We apologize, this is a new policy we have implemented" So I go sit down since the brunette told me they can see me. After waiting 45 minutes I went to the nice blonde and told her I do not have more time to wait and walked out. I will never return. I am not sure if she was having a bad day but she should not have been so abrasive. It ruined my mood that day! Not only that, but don't tell me you cancelled my appointment and then still send me a text and email an hour before my appointment telling me you look forward to seeing me.
