The service is second-to-none. You can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee (or something a little stronger) whilst you undertake a fitting. I was recently looking for a new pair of shoes for a wedding. The staff took their time and were able to help me find a style and colour to match my suit. I cannot recommend the store or the staff highly enough.

Maybe that's just because it was a small town and I was after standard school uniform shoes, but there's a world of difference between those experiences and the Oxford store. It's good for formal shoes for work or nice shoes for going out that are designed to be comfortable, rather than lots of the shoes you get in clothes shops that look good but aren't made my shoe specialists. It's not so good for browsing - at busy times there's quite a wait for an assistsant - or for buying exactly what you need quickly and efficiently. As there's not much in-between, I'd recommend elsewhere, although I still think this is a step above Barratts.

Several years ago they'd let you buy the shoes for children who weren't actually with you on the understanding that they'd give you a refund if they didn't fit the child - I don't know if they still do this no quibble refund but it was very useful. They also don't split the children's shoes into boys shoes and girls shoes. Which is brill if you have a child who doesn't like stinky pink and a mother who can't see the point of buying white trainers with pink butterflies stuck on them - surely trainers are for running around on muddy fields and climbing trees - you don't want them to show the dirt. Anyway in Brentano my daughter and I can browse the shoes and try them on without standing out like sore thumbs or having assistants warn us that we are looking at boys shoes.

There always seems to be something on offer and there are a lot of different types of shoe there, although a lot more for women than men. Then again, there are lots of different types of women's shoe in general. I'd say it's best for fashion shoes - there's no the expertise for buying school shoes and the trainers aren't generally designed for sport, but for casual use. The prices are very reasonable: calf length boots are about £30-£40 but there are of course some extremes, so they can go up to £80. There's a good range of accessories like insoles, laces and polish, and the staff are helpful, even if they do take a long time to fetch your shoes. What I like is that they'll help you with the fit if you want, but are happy to leave you alone if you prefer - something a lot of shoe shops could learn from.

During a Saturday or during a lunch break time, they are almost impossible to get through, let alone get staff to help - though they do try. They do have a wealth of shoes on display and when you aren't fighting people seemingly standing and gazing at the ceiling, you do get a good idea of each type of shoe and can access and check each style and shape. When available, staff are helpful.

It was certainly full of noisy teenagers and shiny white trainers, but then it was a Saturday in tourist season. I must admit, it's actually pretty good inside. Yes, it's a chain store, but that means you're familiar with most of the brands. It's all very well buying funky shoes from an independent shop, but if your flip-flops have got to last a whole holiday without snapping and leaving you flipping but not flopping, it's nice to know the durability of what you're buying. The staff were very helpful and friendly and even saved my seat for me when I went a-wandering to test out the shoes. They were around if I needed help, without doing that awkward hovering thing that so many shoe shop assistants do. The service was very good and they let me put shoes aside to buy another day (they'll reserve them for 24 hours in most cases). The prices are what you'd expect - not many bargains to be found, but it's not outrageous, and there's a good range. They do a 10% student discount too.

Yes, I know that sounds like a cheesy radio advert, but it's true. I think it's best for its boots - heels, leather, suede, flatties, wellies, ankle high, knee high, thigh high - you name it, it's here. The organisation is a bit confusing: I haven't quite figured out how it's all arranged yet, but it's fun having a good browse. The worst part is trying to choose what to get - I usually get sucked in by a tantalising window display, then end up picking 3 different things, going through a huge dilemma of trying to choose one, then buy them all. The problem with this is that although it's cheap, it's not that cheap. My brown suede boots were £25 in the sale, although the sale seems to be a pretty permanent feature. Watch out for the pashminas outside - they're good quality, but you can get them much cheaper in the nearby Undercover Market. There's usually only one man working in the shop, who is helpful when you ask for advice, but leaves you alone otherwise. There are some slim trainers, but not any sports specific ones, lots of pumps, and some bags as well. A great shop for women and a refreshing change from department stores or generic bargain shoe shops.

It's pretty much exclusive designer clothes, although (dare I say it) to me they don't look much different from what you can pick up in M&S or Debenhams for a third of the price. It caters for men, women and children, although some of the men's clothes are on the fashion side of normal. There's a small range of broaches and ribbons, and a fair amount of bags, hats, scarves and sunglasses. They have a few shoes, although the choice is usually one boots, one sandle, one heel. The prices are a worth a goggle at if nothing else: over £100 for a top; over £150 for shoes. Personally I'd go to M&S and spend the difference on something fun, but each to their own. If you're looking for quality, you won't be disappointed, and thankfully this designer boutique doesn't rely on quirkiness, but sells clothes you'd actually wear in public.

It is conveniently located in the Clarendon centre- opposite River Island. It is certainly not the cheapest place to get your shoes, but I think that they are worth the price as they are always good quality and often quite unusual in design. They do also have good sales a few times a year which are worth looking out for- you can shop on thier website aswell if they do not have your size in stock in the store. The staff are always helpful and friendly- even when they have to bring me several pairs of shoes to try and on and I take ages to decide!
