Hayward Japanese Gardens - Hayward Area Rec. & Park District

Five stars because it costs no yen…read more As far as Japanese gardens go, this one is my least favorite because it is rectangular, with a visible metal fence perimeter, with ugly trash and graffiti visible from across the creek and no opportunities to feed the koi fish. Three things, though, that make it special is that they have memorial plaques, stray cats, and blowtorched wood for an aged and weather-resistant finish. From 1913-1962, the site was a practice site for farming and raising livestock for Hayward Union High. It became a garden by the late 1970s, and when dedicated in 1980, focusing on botany (with plants donated by local Japanese-American nurseries) rather than religion. Every first Saturday at 1pm there's a free lecture/tour. It's not especially beautiful or big (3.5 acres) or exciting (the few people I saw there were on their phones), but it's a peaceful, clean area. I think informational displays could help people enjoy it more. Or phone chargers. Information like, many of the wooden connections (including the main entry gate) have notches instead of notches to fit together like puzzle pieces. This more authentic approach prevents rust. Or, the garden uses the Shakkei technique: when you can stand at the highest point, the surrounding trees are meant to look like distant mountains, with specific plants blended with the Japanese maples and native Oaks to make the garden feel ten timers larger than its actual 3.5 acres. Or, the hand-selected granite boulders from the Sierra Nevadas are buried one-third into the ground so it looks like they are growing, which is why I don't manicure myself often. .

I did not know this place existed until my partner found this and brought his family here…read more It's a nice, serene and scenic short walk with plenty of nice photo spots and benches to sit and take in the greenery. I loved seeing all the koi, bansai and various plants they had in the area. It is well worth a visit to come check it out!

After several failed attempts to find a landscaper who would plant our cherry blossom tree, they were the only ones who responded in our time of need. I spoke with them on the phone and they came to our house on the same day with an estimate and date to do the job. They were punctual and listened to me and my wife's suggestion on where to plant the tree. Once they were finished, we were so happy with their work that we decided to hire them to give our backyard a makeover since it had been neglected for decades due to our dogs wreaking havoc. We quickly learned that Rosa and Ricardo were honest and humble people but they were also very knowledgeable and experienced in their work. The first task for our backyard was to remove the steel fence which kept our crazy dogs from escaping. They accomplished that feat in a matter of a couple of hours. Then they returned a few days later to widen our concrete pathway and create a concrete foundation for our storage and shed. On the other side of our backyard, they laid out an automatic sprinkler system and laid sod to give our backyard that nice green look we haven't had since the 90s. Needless to say, we were overjoyed and felt blessed to have them do our backyard. If ever you need someone to transform your yard into your dreamscape, look no further. Rosa and Ricardo are the best!

They can do everything it takes to make your landscape sparkle. My favorite thing about them is that they are responsive to your needs and they have many talents. Unlike others I've tried, they always respond to their customers. I love them. NEW REVIEW ON ANOTHER PROJECT I cannot take my eyes off of my beautifully designed front yard. I keep running outside just to have a look see. Once again I invited Rosa and Ricardo to do my yard project. This time they did my entire front lawn. We negotiated a price within my budget and they immediately began the project. Although they were going to furnish the plants as well, I decided to get my own plants and they gave me recommendations. Rosa and Ricardo gave me samples to peruse for types of rocks and bark colors. They beautifully designed walk ways in the garden and installed a timed drip system. They asked me where to position the plants in the garden and gave me recommendations. Rosa and Ricardo are so creative and meticulous. They are polite and respectful of your property and extremely organized. They asked for my input on several phases of the project, but I liked having them in control..after all...they are the PROS. One thing for sure, if you let them take control of your project you will be exceptionally impressed with their phenomenal talents. After purchasing my plants Rosa and Ricardo gave me information about the size and care of each plant. I loved having them work their magic on my badly neglected front yard. When they were finished, I was sad to see them go. I was shocked that they finished so soon. I LOVE ROSA AND RICARDO. THEY ARE THE BOMB!!! I'm looking forward to them doing the backyard project...and yes...they are on my speed dial. ROCK ON ROSA AND RICARDO!!!

The frustration in driving in a circle. The ambiance of the restaurant is basically a Hong Kong Cafe style. There are two areas catering small parties to big parties. The lighting is terrible though, the florescent lighting is just not for me. The food here is pretty good. They have a huge selection. Hayward doesn't have a lot of Asian catering restaurants that are cheap eats. Yeah, they opened a new banquet, but not a lot of fast, cheap foods. 1. Pork Congee with Thousand Year Old Egg - Typically very flavorful. I like to come grab a bowl when I'm not feeling well to cook. 2. Honey Walnut Shrimp - How can you go wrong? Such a western staple. 3. Pork Chow Fun - Large portion, reasonably priced, tasty enough. 4. Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet - Surprisingly one of my favorite things on the menu. Sharable portions, enough for maybe 2-4 people. 5. Salt & Pepper Prawns - Typically I would say standard, but I don't believe I enjoyed the prawns as much. 6. Mongolian Beef - Standard, soft, best with rice. 7. Salt & Pepper Pork Chops - I could live without this. 8. Combo Pan Fried Noodles - I love me a crispy noodle with gravy I can pour over because it leaves a good texture. 9. Chicken Fried Rice - Standard, sharable 10. Beef Brisket Noodle Soup - Tasty, boyfriend's favorite. Hate that adding wonton is literally $1 per piece and it's so tiny. 11. HK Milk Tea - Reasonable, but not very flavorful.. 12. Lemon Tea - Decent, probably our go to drink 13. Assam Milk Tea with Cheese Foam - Not worth it. The service is pretty standard, limited due to language barrier at times.
