Besides being able to borrow books for free, it has an extensive language centre. Many foreigners sign up for English courses here because it beats having to pay hefty language school fees. The library doesn't only teach English. Every night of the week, people are welcomed to participate in conversation exchanges. Depending of the day, you can practice your Italian, Spanish, French, German, Irish, Japanese or Russian.

It's also a copyright library, meaning that publishers in Ireland, and I think in the UK as a whole, are required to deposit a copy of everything they publish in this library. (In the U.S., the Library of Congress is also a copyright library.) The Old Library and The Long Room are probably the parts of the library you've seen before, with the latter being particularly iconic. Of course a library will hold a variety of unique items, but Trinity has a special treasure: The Book of Kells, a millennium-year old illuminated text. When exiting the Book of Kells exhibit, you step out into the Long Room and it's worth taking a moment to wander through the library before heading out. (And stop by the college bookstore before leaving, too!)

There are over six million legal items stored here as well. The Long Room is a section of the library that holds the oldest books along with sculptures. For obvious reasons, no photos are allowed once inside though we did grab a couple as we started the tour. We did a self-guided tour that went over an hour. The time really flew by. It was so easy to lost in the incredible history of it all. A must-see for any book lovers, history lovers, and so on.

The one distinctive thing that sets it apart from all the other libraries is it's permanent exhibition of, 'The Liberties in photographs.' The Liberties is a part of Dublin that is integral to the make-up of this city. I really enjoyed the exhibition, there are some fantastic photos that really give you a sense of this famous area in Dublin.

Inside every shelf and bookcase were packed with so much history. More impressive than the setting for the Book of Kells since many of the books were under restoration. The oldest books for the exhibition were in display cases to highlight specific topics, authors, designs, printing methods and/or age. It was really quite impressive. I got a kick out of the Easter "egg" hunt they crafted for Easter weekend. The Lego minifigs were hidden throughout the library and we just checked off our handout as we went a long. We did find all the minifigs eventually so they did a good job of placing them in the library. Staff here were so outgoing and informative. Always ready to provide more details or answer questions. As we exited through the gift shop we walked through a quiet but pleasant garden. Must see in Dublin!

The expansive, quiet calm of the Trinity Berkeley Library complex is an ideal place to absorb and compile one's thoughts (on the condition that one is a student, as layfolk aren't permitted inside). Having evolved over a few decades from three locations into one massive depository -Berkeley makes up part of what can be an unwieldy network of shelves, halls and desks, only sometimes tamed by signposts (which can read more like bibliographies themselves). Here, new and old technology (quietly) rubs elbows as laptops share space with microfiche readers and DVDs are shelved with 1915 archival volumes. While time has not been kind to the library's Brutalist architectural exterior, inside the Berkeley's airy and modern study areas remain relevant resources to inspire great ideas.

This is within Pearse library and it's the place to find copies of newspapers from a few weeks ago…read moreback to the 1800's. My Dad would always take me here each year to check the newspapers on the day I was born to see what was happening. Even though it was the same newspaper each year it never lost it's thrill on me. There is something exciting about the connection you feel with the events that were happening the day you got life. Well worth the visit especially if you can't think of anything to do to fill a few hours.

The reading room holds the Dublin and Irish Collections, the Dix Collection of mainly 17th and 18th century Dublin and Irish imprints, the Yeats Collection, the Children's Book Collection and imprints of publishers such as the Dun Emer and Cuala Press. A collection of Thom's Dublin street directories and other Dublin and Irish directories is also maintained. The librarians are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Unlike other libraries the children's and adult sections are separate. Both are large, bright,…read moremodern and welcoming spaces. The children's side is to the left and I have memories of walking up to Ballymun to get books that my own local library didn't have and sitting on the comfy chairs reading C.S Lewis and J.R Tolkien for hours before being thrown out to carry my armload of books all the way back to Drumcondra. The library remains to me a place of wonder and learning and nothing beats reading a library book, not even the kindle. I'd miss the smell of books if I were never to go into a library again. Ballymun library is one of my favourite libraries and i've been a member of a few, both in Dublin and London. There is also plenty of parking outside.

They have a good stock of books covering and ranging many subjects. There are also four computers, where you can book a 50 minute Internet session. In addition, the library permits members of the public to use the toilet - something many libraries in Dublin won't do!
