This used to be one of my local offies. For a while I had it in my mind that the shop was called…read more'Fine Wines', something that always caused roars of laughter from my flatmates. And of course there is nothing fine about the wines on sale here. I remember once being tempted by this discount offer on an already suspiciously cheap wine - 2.69 a bottle or whatever it was. well, if you bought 4 bottles you'd get them for even cheaper. Of course I couldn't resist. And of course the wine was absolutely revolting, vile stuff I suspect it consisted of a mixture of dregs from the left over bottles after a house party. In general, their selection of wines is eccentric at best, but luckily they have a more normal range of beers. And also some spirits, so you'll be alright. The selection of food in here is not great. I'd expect them to at least do all the major Indian spices, but no. You'll find staple food items here, such as cheese, filled pasta, yoghurt, milk, orange juice etc, and some fruit and veg, but it's not particularly cheap. Yeah, unless you're desperate you're probably better off wandering down to the tiny Tesco at the petrol station another 100 meters down the road. The photo is a bit crap but I feel it reflects the quality of the shop.

I concur with the previous reviewer entirely - a relaxed shop on Chiswick High Road with a huge…read morevariety of almost exclusively French wines (yes, you guessed it, it's a French chain). On the two occasions I've been in, service and knowledge really has been excellent - one example being when I went in and wanted an excellent bottle of Bordeaux for a special anniversary. Not really knowing what was good and what wasn't - I specified a price of up to about £40. The assistant's eyes lit up: not because it was a guaranteed £40 sale, but because I was trusting her judgement and knowledge - the one she recommended was actually £26, but she indicated it was better than the other, more expensive ones. She also gave advice on decanting it to get the best possible flavours and for how many years it would keep. I also left with it beautifully wrapped and ready to give to the intended person. Highly recommended and in my experience, certainly better than Oddbins.

My favourite game - go into any branch of Nicolas and ask them to recommend a good bottle of…read moreItalian wine. You'll get a withering Gallic look and the response "But, sir, there is no such thing". That's because Nicolas is a specialist wine merchant that stocks virtually only French wine, although other regions do feature in modest quantities. They also stock spirits, whiskies and champagnes. Their knowledge is excellent and you'll never come away disappointed with their recommendations. Great for picking up oddities, for example Rose Liqueur (which by the way makes an excellent aperitif with Champagne)

Highlights: Kernel Brewery beers--small selection of IPAs and, if I remember correctly, Pale Ales. Sadly, no Porter... Meantime has a solid presence here! There is Porter and Stout for me. :) Brooklyn Brewery: Lager and Choco Stout. Yum. Ridge: no Lytton Springs or any other red at present, but a Chard, if you're up for it. The store is cosy and attractively filled with wine, beer and spirits. Props to them for stocking a decent assortment of single malts and Elijah Craig, a bourbon I very much enjoy. They need to ditch the "gold" Cuervo as it's rot-gut and stock some El Jimador or Don Julio, if they can. Casadores is my jam, but "I'm not in Kansas anymore, Toto", so I know that shipping over good tequila is super expensive, and, therefore, a financial drag. Jensen, a locally distilled gin, was looking pretty interesting at 27.99 a bottle, but I'm still in love with Sipsmith, so when the bloom is off that rose I'll be checking J out. Having described (maybe not well enough?) what I don't like in a Chard (read: not buttery, not oaked) I was recommended a few different wines that might fit the bill. Sadly, the one I did pick out of those recommended is somewhat oaked and buttery with hints in vanilla. It's an interesting wine, but not the "old world" mineral-like white Burgundy I had hoped for.

I visited for the first…read moretime tonight and was warmly received with a tasting of a couple of bottles of red that had been opened. It is always reassuring when the proprietors are willing to let you try before you buy! The wine is arranged by style, making a welcome change from the traditional regional format. This encourages you to move away from tried and tested favourites and into something new. I found a couple of interesting bottles to take home with plenty of others left on the shelves. The beer is hidden around the corner in the shop and appears to be a fast moving regularly changing selection from both the breweries that are nearby (Meantime and Hop Stuff) and those from further afield. Again a selection now sits in the fridge. All of the above points to a good shop. What made it excellent for me was the service. Friendly, informed and engaging - I can't wait to go back already.

There were hundreds of wines to choose from, all organised by type and country of origin. The gentleman behind the counter was most sociable and was able to speak with authority when giving me advice on which of their wide selection would suit my tastes. He even promised that if I did not like the one he recommended I could bring that bottle back and swap it for something else which made me reassured and that the shop care about customer's wine experience rather than just making sales. For those who don't like wine there are beers, ales and alchopops on offer as well as spirits and mixers. Bottoms Up run promotions and special offers which are displayed in the windows and are always worth checking out if you are on your way to a party.
