As such, it was rebuilt with a modern 1950s interior, and a preserved facade that holds the feel of the marktplatz together. It is a Lutheran Church, standing strong in the shadow of Dom St. Peter (Luther's presence is strongly felt in Worms). I think there may be a museum attached too. Definitely worth a stop.

Four Stars for the importance of Dom zu Worms in world History. Located at the highest point in the…read moreinner city of Worms, this Romanesque began construction in 1125 and was completed in 1181. It was the site of the nomination of Leo IX as pope in 1048, the marriage of Emperor Frederick II to Isabella of England in 1235 but probably most importantly the site of the Diet of Worms where Martin Luther was declared a heretic to the Catholic church by Charles V in 1521. The Dom zu Worms is free to enter as is the adjacent garden. While in the garden look for a replica of Martin Luther's shoes. The octagonal aspe is highly decorated with rosette stained glass windows. Martin Luther is depicted in one of the glass window frames. There are sarcophagi containing the bodies of nine ancestors of Emperor Conrad the II, as well as, additional grave monuments, grave stones and plates. About two hundred feet from Dom zu Worms is where the Martin Luther Monument can be seen. The park is also free.

Der Wormser Dom St. Peter ist einer von drei historischen Kaiserdome am Rhein (die anderen sind in…read moreSpeyer und Mainz) und wurde zwischen 1130 und 1181 erbaut, das Innere nach Verwüstungen im pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg 1698 neu ausgestaltet. Der Dom beeindruckt von Außen wie von Innen, die ganze Anlage mit dem Vorplatz und dem seitlich platzierten kleinen Garten ist sehr schön. Im Innern finden sich etliche hochwertige Reliefs und Skulpturen, das Hauptschiff präsentiert sich vergleichsweise dunkel (kleine Fenster und rötlicher Stein) und im Sommer schön warm. ;) Es gibt also einiges zu sehen und ein Besuch, auch ohne religiösen Anlass, ist bei einer Visite der Stadt sowieso ein Muss. St Peter ist die bedeutendste Sehenswürdigkeit von Worms. Der Eintritt ist natürlich frei.
