Had Sunday (in August 2018) breakfast outside. Just a simple breakfast with speedy, friendly and helpful service. Will return soon.

You can find all kinds of 3rd District locals hanging here with the owners Michael and Andrea for lunch, a beer, playing cards, or taking a break from working at Town Town or on the local construction sites. With homemade daily menus starting at just 6,40 (including soup) and ranging to about 12 euros max., this place can't be beat for a traditional Austrian meal. I have actually never needed to look at the menu! They always offer at least three different daily specials. Come hungry because portions are large, or bring your own plasticware to pack up and take leftovers home. This place is also great for a private party or event. They will close the place down just for you and your friends. We had my husband's farewell work party there with ribs and beer. They were so accomodating and the ribs were amazing! A downside is that it is so small and it is a smoking locale, but it usually doesn't matter since everyone is stuffing their face!

The ambiance is certainly a locals' spot; English will be limited and the menu is only in German. Beer selection is small but good. Service is welcoming. Our waitress, Tina was excellent and steered us toward some great selections. I ordered the spicy ribs which came well prepared over one of the few open pits in the Vienna area. The ribs were cooked well done into my liking, but not necessarily the fall off the bone type that Americans are accustomed to. Definitely prefer my ribs well done rather than undercooked. The flavors were amazing. My wife got the chef's special chili peanut chicken. Slow roasted chicken thighs with amazing seasoning and sauce. Finished our meal with an apricot ice cream dessert which I understand to be seasonal. The entire meal was amazing and highly recommend to anyone in the area.

I sat for 50 minutes and was completely ignored by all three servers, even after explicitly stating I was ready to order. Eventually, I stood up and asked to pay for my drink so I could leave. They offered no apology whatsoever. The service felt dismissive, rude, and unfortunately, left me wondering if there was an underlying bias against foreigners.

I have to admit that I really, really want to give Seidl 4 stars, but I just can't. Even though…read morethe food and drink is good, I can get anything that is fried and made with bread crumbs gluten-free, and the atmosphere is a mix of family and tradition, I cannot get passed the portions compared to the prices and the odd service. The owner is friendly and comes around to every table, this particular time trying to pedddle the mushrooms that the family grows themsleves. Make sure to speak German though, he is much nicer then. (Insider story, on a previous visit, he told my husband and a friend that he charges tourists and foreigners for tap water and not Austrians). The waitress was semi-helpful, but there was no substitute for gluten-free soup or dessert so that I could order the kalbschnitzel 3-gang menu like everyone else for 17 euros. So I had to order the kalb schnitzel regular portion off the menu (which was said to be a larger portion than the menu, but really wasn't, with only potato salad for 16 euros) - no soup or dessert. Not a bargain menu. And after seeing my friends' portions and plates, I am not so sure the menu was a better route. My husband actually left hungry. The blaufraenkisch red wine was good but at 5 euros an 1/8 glass I wanted spectacular. To top it off we asked a server, who actually is a family member, if we could pay with visa and he said yes, no problem. Turns out no, you cannot. It made for a very embarrassing moment for my friends and I.

WHY? 1) On the Internet, the restaurant indicates that credit cards are accepted. When it was time for us to pay, we received a handwritten note on a small piece of paper with one word descriptions of what we ordered, a corresponding number and a total amount due. We were then abruptly told that we had to pay cash. We were surprised, to say the least, but we didn't argue and we had to go to a bank to withdraw some money. 2) We were overcharged for a small piece of bread and butter (4 euros) a 750 ml bottle of still water (5 euros) and a small dessert (14 Euros). 3) The man who served us, who I believe was the owner, walked into a chair and knocked it over as he was leaving our table, and he let go of a menu that he had given guests at another table and it flew under our table, which led me to believe that he had had too much to drink.

We got there around 1pm, and all lunch specials were gone! So we had to order off the menu. My husband chose a traditional pork dish with knoedel and kraut, can't go wrong we thought, right? Wrong. It was so overly salted and then the knoedel was so tasteless. Really strange since this place has a good reputation. I odered the zanderfilet, another traditional can't go wrong with it dish. Ugh. Turns out you only get a piece of zander for the almost 9 euro price and have to add side dishes that are another 3-4 euros. I added the "fresh vegetables of the season". What I got was frozen Asian Wok veggies. No joke. Not to mention the service was pretentious and rude. We probably won't ever go back.
