This resort is truly paradise! Here's what I learned from my experience.
Food: Delicious! Oceana served up scrumptious breakfasts with an oceanfront view. My favorite items were the French toast and Dominican Omelet, fresh fruit, and a smoothie. The World Café breakfast was decent enough for something quick if you needed a bite before an excursion or a flight. For lunch, I was partial to the amazing grill-outs on the beach. You can't go wrong with paella, fresh fish pulled out of the water and grilled right before your eyes, Dominican burritos, or burgers. Be sure not to miss the fruit lady! And pair any of these items with the "Painkiller" from the swim-up bar or coconut water fresh-picked from a palm tree! The World Café is also a great lunch option to try out Dominican food for a culture experience. If you find yourself craving a snack, check out the Preferred Club for the most delicious brownie truffles or the Coco Café. Room service is also an option! My favorite restaurant for dinner was either Himitsu (hibachi or regular menu, both great) or Oceana. I was a bit disappointed by the other restaurants. Trattoria's pizza left me starved, and Portofino was not impressive at all. You won't need to worry about reservations, but service can be slow. Servers will do their best to accommodate you, and they're especially friendly if you engage them in Spanish and leave a tip. Some notable people were Gregory, Nuñez, and Alberto.
Entertainment: Everyone will find something to do here! Some of my favorite activities were the water trampoline on the ocean, the rock climbing wall, archery, ping-pong, and pool table in the Core Zone, the circus and Dominican shows, the live music each night, water aerobics, yoga, and Zumba. Super Louis, Jay-Zee, Ben Franklin, and Juana were all so much fun!
Grounds: The resort is maintained beautifully! Each day, the bushes are trimmed, the grass watered, etc. You're not expected to return your towels and you're allowed to eat and drink in the pool, yet the place is so clean. The ocean is the Atlantic, but if you go on excursions, you might see the Caribbean. The sand is golden and velvety. Each day, it is turned over so it stays nice and fresh. My only complaint about the grounds is what I assume to be fumigation. One night, on our way to dinner around 7 or 8 o'clock, my family encountered this horrible gaseous smell which resulted in a fog. It was gone by the next morning, but it was very creepy while it lasted. We held our breath as much as possible.
Preferred Club: I think this is worth the upgrade because of the wonderful oceanfront breakfast exclusive to club members and the great lounge stocked with premium drinks, delightful finger food, and fancy desserts. You also get access to a pillow menu, a special room service menu, and the option to sign out movies. Genesis, who works at the desk, is such a sweetheart. She'll definitely become your friend!
Room: Our room was nice, although we did have some issues. The TV was missing cords and was not hooked up to the wall, which prevented me from being able to watch the movies I signed out until my dad was able to fix it. The safe in my room was also problematic as it was very old and temperamental. One night our maid forgot to do turndown service. However, most times there was a problem like the towels not being replaced or not enough drinks in the fridge, management jumped to resolve it.
Excursions: Personally, I wish we hadn't done two excursions because there's so much to do in the resort itself. We were there for a week, and I feel like it wasn't enough.
Vendors: Sunday nights, all sorts of vendors gather on the hotel grounds and can be slightly aggressive. Just say "No thank-you" and continue walking. They'll get the message. On the beach, there are three or four vendors that walk around every day selling sunglasses, jewelry, hats, etc. They too will leave you alone if you make it clear you're not interested.
Dominican Culture: I love being exposed to new cultures and lifestyles, so I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't get that while staying at the resort. On the contrary, I got to practice my Spanish every day with everyone from the van driver to the bartender to the hostess. It was great fun. They love when you attempt to assimilate. I got to indulge in Dominican dishes as well as experience the culture at the Dominican show which featured everything from tribal dances to contemporary dances such as hip hop. A highlight of the trip was the Catholic mass held in Spanish on Sunday morning.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my family, and overall we had an amazing time. I'd consider coming back if I could! read more
