I am sorry to write such a bad review Dr.Rubenstein. I had expectations but you proved me wrong. I thought you were professional you turned out to be a phony doctor. I didnt have to see you again but I did everything I could to feel better after the hospital and you decided to not be of any help. Instead of helping me feel better and you suggested medications for ADHD and dEPRESSION and cancelled the prescription and left the office. I make an appointment 2 weeks prior to the original appointment and not even ask if you were available sooner at your other clinic offices at Forest Hills NY area which you work at. I have ADHD and depression symptoms and you cancelled my appointment 24 minutues later saying i was late and you couldnt see me. I arrived 8 minute late and excused myself. I had medical records to give him and didnt accpet them. I hope he billed my insurance last appointment or this appointment I can have proof of his negligence and unprofessionalism. If anyone of his patients have ever thought about suicide or felt more depressed because of his treatment there is a problem with you Dr. Rubenstein. That would be malpractice in my lamguange. I saw Dr, Rubinstein somewhere between 2010 and 2012, and yes, he has a peculiar personality, but as healthcare worker who knows many psychiatrists, they all are peculiar. I was just reading some reviews trashing him because he does not give meds right away and wants you to see him every week. Well, though I kind of didn't like to be "imposed," that is my idea of a wholesome doctor, who not only gives you meds, but also treats your mind problems. If you want just meds and aren't willing to put the therapeutic work to get better, then he is not the doctor for you. I was very annoyed when he took off time of the session when I was late, when he was "late" to my late appointment, or when he charged me when I forgot and didn't show up. Truth is, I was irresponsible and didn't plan appropriate. after some events, I was never late or missed sessions, not I have never again been late to the dentist, my primary care physician, or my current therapist. I'm grateful for the (albeit expensive) lesson, and i know I would not have changed if i had not been uncomfortable. For honesty purposes, after the initial time mismanagement, and not being late for a prolonged period of time, i was late only a couple of times to his therapy, but after he saw i had put the work to not be late, he didn't take time off again. For a period of time I seriously needed medication, but after a while I didn't need it anymore, and felt therapy with him was not making much progress, and that's why I stop seeing him. Wonder why I didn't need the medication? Because of therapy!! In hindsight, Dr. Rubinstein approach was much more healthier than that of Doctors who only do medication management, and whose patients stay under their care for many years just for the drugs. I was medicated for a while, I put the therapeutic hard work, and was released back in the world without needing to take any more meds. Overall, I'm a very happy customer. read more

Dr. Rubinstein is one of the worse, most unprofessional Drs. Ever. He is inappropriate, leaving me feeling uncomfortable stuck in that room with him for 1/2 hour. He spends most of the session talking about his life and vacations to Dominican Republic. . Dr. Rubinstein demands you see him weekly in order for him to refill your medicine, ( clearly to collect co-payment) which is uncustomary, most Drs require monthly or every three months maintenance visits. This guy is a certifiable quack. He's just as nuts as the rest of the patients in the asylum! The one and only session I had with him was just SO out there I feel like I was in an episode of Seinfeld! I choose him because he was conveniently located and seemed to have enough good reviews on Zocdoc. His OWN website also states that he specializes in womens mental health as well as an array of other mental heath conditions so I figured what more could I ask for? Apparently I was asking for too much and I am completely blown away by the things he said to me. I thought maybe he was having an off day and didn't take his meds or something, but after reading the reviews it's grossly obvious that isn't the case. When I inquired about medications(JUST INQUIRED) he told me that he WASN'T a drug dealer and that if I wanted drugs I should just go to the corner to find someone slinging the "Good Stuff." I AM NOT KIDDING HE ACTUALLY SAID THIS TO ME!! Then(like a few others mentioned) he told me if I couldn't "Score" on the corner to go on the internet and order anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds because I sure to need to be medicated(WTF? PATIENT BEWARE! Save your insurance company the expense of the visit and you the expense of the copay- he is a complete and utter waste of time. I am amazed that he has a 4+ star rating on zocdoc and I believe it's just that the wait time weighs in as much as the factors regarding his competence and therefore skews the results. Or that there may be some sort of kickback scheme. I should have trusted the 100% 1 star reviews on yelp and saved my time. He speaks illy of his patients and those mentally ill- for instance saying he sees some real nut jobs and this is why he doesn't have a facebook. Why would this make a patient feel comfortable with him- hearing him speak about others? At one point he went to give me a high five and then told me, just kidding I don't ever make physical contact with patients. Um, what? I get if that's the policy but do you really resort to weird humiliation tactics such as that, and why try to get me to slap your hand in the first place? 2. He tore down my former psychiatrist (who is the best there is and went to Georgetown!) and insisted I didn't have anxiety but that it was likely another problem and that he could offer me no present relief while I took other avenues to figure out if something else caused the frequent spells of anxiety I have since starting a new job and moving to a new state. He didn't believe me when I told him that I saw a doctor earlier in the year and my blood and everything came back healthy and normal, but insisted I revisit everything, claiming all of the former highly qualified medical professionals I saw were somehow off and he clearly was in the right. 3. When I indicated that if we couldn't talk about some sort of solution I wanted to leave, he cut me off and went off on tangents about random things and completely wasted my time. He goes off of random hunches and then to extremes and tons of tangents, so I ended up having to spend the entire time listening to him go on tangents about everything. 4.When the time had apparently run up he rushed me off without any closure, for instance like saying "I think you should see whoever." He just ended it. In the main room I asked so now what, I don't understand what I am paying for. He said I should make another appointment with him if I wanted to know what I should do about my anxiety- ummm, what?!? Uncomfortable experience! I went in thinking that this guy would be someone I could relate to. But I was running late due to MTA totally out of my hands so instead of coming in late I decided to call to allow them to know I was behind schedule. The lady over the phone was rude and unprofessional. I told her my situation and instead of helping she cancelled my appointment and told me she could do nothing about it.. I asked to reschedule and was told there was no opening but when I go on Zocdoc guess who found another appointment time during this week! This is a long overdue review but OMG how is this guy a licensed doctor?????! How???? I went to 'dr' rubinstein bcs I desperately needed help and he took my insurance. So I made an appt and off I went. When I arrived, dr rubinstein opened the door. He was wearing his tie around his neck and his shirt was opened. Looked like he just woke up from a nap...at 11am. That should have been my clue to run but I didnt. We then sat down and he spent the hour talking about how amazing his secretary is and about other a patients who have come to him due to issues with their spouses. I was there for anxiety so not sure how he got into that. When I was discussing my issues he looked at me like I was nuts. Yup, that's what I want from a dr..andhis shirt and tie were still undone. He then went on and on how he cant see me unless we have a patient/dr relationship and how amazing he is compared to other drs. He said he couldn't prescribe me meds bcs I drink one cup of coffee a day. He then gave me one of his texts books and told me to read a few pages about different meds. Yea, he watched me read the pages. When our time was up he walked me to his 'amazing' secretary and continued to tell me how great she is..again...Such a wack job!. read more

I never write reviews, but after my wife tried to receive help from this man, I felt compelled. After going through extensive surgery which left her physically altered, this man had the audacity to claim that she was just being overly emotional about it and that her psychiatric issues were just her "being a female". He claims to have a special interest in womens' issues, but he has no compassion for women, and no understanding of their emotions. He spoke inappropriately to my wife, claiming that the first appointment was like a "first date" between them, and proceeded to tell her that she's also overreacting to her work stresses, and that she should order medications over the internet instead of asking him to prescribe her something. That's ILLEGAL !!! He wants to be both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. They ARE NOT THE SAME THING, and he is arrogant enough to believe that he can do both. His job is to manage medication for patients with psychiatric issues. He should not also be a therapist--the proper way is to have a psychotherapist for your mind and emotions, and a psychiatrist for your medications, if needed. He feels himself a god amongst insects, and as long as you are willing to listen to him demean other doctors, demean his less-educated patients, and wax profound about his own ideas, then don't waste your time or money. Pushy, wouldn't stop talking about himself long enough to let me get a word in edgewise, and cared more about my copay than anything I had to say. He spent the first visit telling me what a great doctor he was, in particular how he had all these patients who were misdiagnosed by their previous doctors, and how he was able to give them the right diagnosis and help them so much. The second visit I needed to cancel a week in advance and he refused to let me, saying that if I did so I would lose my spot on his schedule forever. I told him that, all the same I wouldn't be able to make it in. The next time I saw him he tried to charge me my co-pay for a visit I never had. The third visit he spent talking about himself, in particular a trip he had taken to South America. He did spend some time though talking about patients who had been difficult, including one who had killed himself, but he assured me that he had done everything he could and did not lose any sleep over it. Overall, it seems that the things that he cared about, in order, are: 1) himself 2) making money 3) maybe other people? read more

I would heed warning to those seeking to see Dr. Rubinstein, please make sure he's the appropriate psychiatric professional for your needs. I went to see Dr. Rubinstein on 11/17/2014 @ 2:30 PM, I decided to wait until today to write my review so that I can be as clear headed as possible to make a detailed account for my experience with him. I am a verified user on zocdoc.com since that's how I was able to book an appointment with him. I am a female to male transgender, I've known I was transgender for 23 years (since I was 4). I was asked by my OB-GYN to seek out a psychiatrist who could write me a psychological evaluation saying that I was indeed in my right mind. It was a simple task yet when I left Dr. Rubinstein's office I was a mixture of upset, depressed and felt highly prejudiced upon. It was so bad that I actually did have a breakdown when I got home. Mostly due to the fact that so many professionals chose to practice mental health with an amazing amount of ignorance to the changing world around them. When I first arrived at his office I noticed that only Dr. Rubinstein and his secretary were there. After filling out some paper work he called me in. I went ahead and told him why I was there and whether he might be able to help me with what I needed. His exact words at that point were "I don't want to say yes or no yet". So I decided to go ahead and start telling him more about myself, with every step of information he would get lost in thought and then tell me an irrelevant story about life or of his other patients. (I will not be surprised if he turns me into a story for the future as well) He even went as far to compare a Drag Queen to me, even though I am a transgendered person. There is a HUGE difference between dressing in drag and being transgendered. I decided to ignore what seemed to be a huge amount of ignorance from Dr. Rubinstein in regards to the GLBT community. I'm not sure how he's on a transgender friendly therapist list, he just seems neutral with a huge lack of knowledge for anything GLBT. When I eventually got to the point of telling him my aspiration: to become a psychologist for the GLBT community. His tone changed from being slightly pleasant to outright rude, even more so to the point where he did elevate his voice after asking me a pointless question then rushing out to make a copy of the referral. I must now stress I was only there for that letter, not for any medication. I was also more than willing to return to more sessions for the letter if need be. However in the last few minutes of our session (it lasted 30 min), he wasn't even able to give me a direct no. I'm pretty sure if I was just a 27 year old woman seeking the same thing I would've walked out there with the letter. But since I am a transgendered person I had to suffer his ignorance and prejudice. Would I recommend him? Absolutely not, there are better therapists out there who can help one with their needs without rubbing off on a rude uncaring manner. However if you enjoy your therapist talking for more than 50% of the session, you're female and have no plans to ask him for medication, he may be right up your alley. In my personal opinion he just seemed very ignorant in many aspects of life. He lacked professional composition near the end of his session when he raised his voice at me. As well as not really able to grasp a simple task as a letter just saying I am sound of mind. Mind you he did say during the session I seemed highly intelligent, composed and kind hearted. But I guess the fact that I'm stuck in the wrong body, (due to no fault of my own) played a huge role in the ignorance and prejudice I felt in his office. Just got done with this initial "appointment" and I'm kicking myself for not checking this sooner. He is by far the MOST demeaning, ignorant "doctors" I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. Not only is he not knowledgeable ( I knew more about pharmacology then him and answered a question of his with such pinpoint accuracy he still dismissed it) he doesn't care nor want to hear what you have to say. This Dr. gave me the WORST 1st experience with a psychiatrist. 1. i made and appt. and the receptionist called around 1pm the day of to confirm I was coming. (appt was at 4). She then asked if I can come earlier. ..like asap so my mom who was driving me agreed. As I am walking down the hall I feel my phone vibrating so I ignore it and walk in the office. The receptionist asks my name then says she was just calling me to tell me to come at my regular time because she "made a mistake". I live about 25mins away and just paid for parking; And it was cold and snowing so I told her I cannot leave and come back. She then called other patients and asked if they can come 15mins after their scheduled appointments due to over booking 2. it still took about 30mins before I was seen. 3. the dr calls me in and after introducing himself, immediately tells me this session will be short and he will make it up to me in my next one. he spent most of the session talking about himself and asking me about my job and where I went to school (nothing to do with my issue). 4. he gave me a "controlled substance" and asked me to come back in a week. the total session was about 10mins long. I also made an appointment for 2 weeks after the next appointment because the Dr was going away 5. once i left, the receptionist calls me and says "I" forgot to pay a Co payment. I sat there for 30mins and she said nothing about a copay!!!! It was my 1st time there. how did I forget when this is her job?! 6. i come back in a week and he asks how the medicine I've been taking, then prescribes me another one, and session over (another 10mins). he again asks me to come back in a week. I brought up the fact that I won't be able to come in weekly forever because I started a new job and have to leave early to make his appointments (he seemed to ignore my statement) 6. my next scheduled appointment was cancelled due to a snow storm so they rescheduled it for a few days later. -- I just started a new job and was offered overtime so I couldn't make the appointment 7. i called the morning of to cancel and the receptionist said there would be a fee for cancelation. i understood and asked how much... she says $104 !! after complaining, she advised she would speak to the dr and call me back. I gave her my mother's number and asked her to call my mother because I was at work and couldn't go back and forth on the phone. 8. the Dr still calls me and I run to the bathroom to figure this out. I explained why I couldn't come and he starts getting extra hyper. he told me to lie to my manager and tell her I had a bad reaction to medicine and had to go to my doctor; and said he will write a letter stating the same. he then asked if I can come in the next morning and go to work late which I again explained I cannot do. I just started this job and can't keep leaving early/coming in late for 10 min dr sessions. he then says he's trying to save me from paying the $104 so I said I will "try" and let him know 9. i ask my mom to call back about an hour later and tell them I will not be coming. my mom tells me how she spoke to the Dr who was rude and told her I will be charged because I "signed something" agreeing to the $104 and he "tells all of his patients" this policy during the 1st session 10. i go to the appointment already previously scheduled, not wanting to be charged another $104. i wanted to see what I "signed" but was hesitant since they didn't bring up my cancellation fee. Saw the doctor and it was pretty much the same 10mins session. overall, I do not recommend this dr. him and his staff are very unprofessional and seem to add to patients anxiety rather than help it. they have a lack of compassion and their attitudes are disgusting. i never paid the cancellation fee probably because they realized I was never made aware ! read more

My husband suffers from Depression, Insomnia, Panic.... this guy didn't even speak to him for 30 minutes ... basically said there is nothing I can do for you. Truly horrible experience. The reviews on ZocDoc and Yelp are accurate - he talks the entire time! He asked me maybe 1 or 2 questions and spent almost the entire session lecturing me about coffee/caffeine and making bizarre analogies. He told me that we might not be a good fit b/c he's not "warm and fuzzy." However, I don't believe "warm and fuzzy" is what I need. I was just expecting him to ask questions, listen and provide feedback/assistance (as that was how it went with the psychologist I used to see). I ended up in tears in his office and not b/c I was working through anything, but because he was making me feel awful. I literally cannot recommend this man any less. Even if someone said to me, "I just want to go to a Psychiatrist who has no qualifications, no bedside manner and is half crazy," I would not send them here. He takes the cliche "quack" doctor to new heights. I have never witnessed anyone in the medical profession, if that is his profession, so completely deluded. I too, like others, gave hi the benefit of the doubt and went to see him 3 times, the third time being 6 months after the 2nd. I complained of anxiety related sleep issues. In each session he told me some story about eating a pint of Haagen Daaz in the middle of the night and in one instance, after answering a question relating to the type of medication I might require, he proceeded to touch his stomach in a provocative way, saying, "I really wish I could lose some weight. I don't know what's wrong with me," then asked, "You see what I'm doing?" I said "No" and needless to say that was the third and last time I will see this man. Except perhaps on the news one day. He was the WORSE doctor I have ever been to in my life. He is mean and completely not compassionate. I left his office in tears because he put me down the whole time. He made me feel so much worse and never offered me any help at all. Right before I walked out he tells me he can't offer me a dr/patient relationship at this time but to make sure to make an appt for the next week with him. I really feel a need to get this man from practicing any further. He will make you feel even more anxious and hopeless than how you were before you saw him. He is a very mean man and clearly the ONLY reason he's doing this is for the money. I only gave him a star because I couldn't post this if I didn't but he doesn't even deserve one star. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I saw this quack twice when I was suffering from postpartum depression. He was rude, inappropriate, and went on tangents. Every bad review here is exactly what I experienced. He also made a remark to me about our first meeting being similar to a "first date". Why I saw him a second time is beyond me but I didn't return when in that last visit he used a sexual reference to make an example of what he was trying to say. He also berated other patients to me. Ugh! Definitely keep away from this creepy and unprofessional individual. I should have reported him. He is taking money from people without even helping them and laughing all the way to the bank. This is the first yelp review I have ever written. This man is a quack, and it scares me to know that people like him are trusted with patients. I went to him for help with my anxiety and depression, and he told me my problem was my history of abuse. I have never been abused in any sense of the word. He interrupted me often, went on completely irrelevant rants, and was insulting. He told me I should seek help from a hospital because it would be more appropriate. There were times when I was sure the whole thing was an elaborate prank. He actually yelled at me when I disagreed with him, and I started crying I was so frustrated. He told me to stop being so dramatic. I walked out of his office before the appointment was over, which is something I've never done before. What a waste of time and money. I strongly encourage anyone seeking psychiatric help to go to someone else. read more

He spent 25 minutes telling me my problem was CAFFEINE!!! when I asked if he would give me any prescriptions, even a low dose until next time, he said "would you like a baby with 3 heads in the future." REALLY?? $130 of foolishness, dont go!! read more

First off, to all the pansies on here who can't accept frank counsel, and prefer to be enabled by their "drug dealers" or coddled by mommy and daddy then yes I can understand why you feel this way. For two years I was "treated" by a psych (I will not name him) who merely prescribed me anxiety meds (which did help) but we barely ever spoke to each other. Our meetings were barely 10 minutes. His waiting room was an ocean if copays, of which I was just a drop of water I got so used to the meds he prescribe me because they were effective. But when after 2 years he suddenly retired I started to panic because I didnt learn/he did not teacher me practical ways of dealing with my issues. I started relying heavily on the meds, and the thought of reverting back to my previous condition brought on my anxiety. My previous doctor never attempted to build a relationship with me, and I didn't know any better so I continued with him because he kept giving me my "fix". Rubenstein candidly tells you right from the start he will not risk his license, and your health, and prescribe you something before getting toknow you. A disclosure I appreciated. That, my fellow Yelpers is called common sense. Unfortunately common sense is not so common anymore, even in the medical world. If you want frank, practical therapy AND correctly prescribed meds based on knowledge of you as a person, not just a patient then Rubenstein is who you want. He's blunt, and candid...and it is necessary. He is also full of laughter and commendation. I leave his office feeling empowered, with pep in my step. As if I keep carefully and skillfully untying all these inner knots I have wound up in after 36 years of life, and yes I am still a work in progress. But after seeing doc Rubenstein for about 2 months, he prescribed me the correct meds/doses for my chemical needs but teaches me to use the "tools" I have at my disposal naturally as well as teaching me new skills, perspectives, books, anecdotes, that I am using to become the best version of myself! Yes he does talk about Dominican Republic , guess what that's called a rwlationshio. It works like this: You talk, he listens. He talks you listen. You share thoughts, ideas , laugh, agree, disagree. You know about him , he knows about you. I know I am always in the driver's seat I decide what we talk about and he us humbly willing to serve. For example today I opened with "I got one foot on the gas, one foot in the brake"...his reply with a smile "the story of your life" and I smiled because guess what? He "gets me". And helped me to keep staying focused, and conscious if when I feel this way. To thoughtfully RESPOND to situations that make me feel ambivalent like this, not simply to REACT. So that's my review. Decide what you want, a drug dealer for your "fix" or a coach to help you become the best version of you ! read more

I've seen this dr twice now, I think he is as helpful to those who actually want help. He's strategies may be diffrent from other drs I've seen but it is refreshing to hear someone who is an actual person on the other side of the room. One that can actually look you in the eyes instead of throw prescriptions at you. I disagree with a lot of these reviews. I think if u see him, and he can help you, and u want help ...you will get it. Wether it is from him or if he see's you need more than just him he can direct you on where to go. I've been through atleast 20 different psychiatrist, and personally I found him refreshing. Someone who actually cares about his patients and his profession. He's honest, and blunt and that in his field of work is hard to find. One of the few drs I've found that i felt comfortable with in a very long time. read more

Patient beware! He looks and talks like the crazy doctors from the movies. He rambles, is very combative and acts so crazy that at some point I thought he was joking, but he wasn't!. He spent all session just talking about the insurance companies and how he doesn't like insurance patients just because they don't pay out of pocket they don't keep the appointments. He never asked me any questions whatsoever, he only talked about appointments and if I was willing to commit to come every week, and he talked about money, that he needs to pay the bills, rambling and rambling for around 20 min after that he dismissed me, but never asked any question!, it was a total waste of time and insurance money. He said that my insurance company won't pay for a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist at the same time, so if I wanted medication I needed to fire my psychotherapist and only see him. But he is scary, I will never see him again. read more

This guy is one of a kind. I don't know if he got touched where he wasn't suppose to when he was younger but he has some deep psychological issues. How he has a doctorate in any field amazes me. When I began my session with him, I brought up a topic that I was talking to a friend who is a medical professional now and worked in a pharmacy prior. He immediately proceeded to tear this person down calling them a glorified pill counter and ignoring the fact that they are a doctor. Not only was his bedside manner so atrocious to the point where I just kept my mouth shut because of the discomfort of him in the room, but he kept throwing back in my face the same thing about my friend being a glorified pill counter over and over through out the session. There was also the point where he said he wasn't there to listen to my problems. If i needed someone to listen I should go see a psychologist. Those were his words. I wonder what he actually does for work because he definitely is to incompetent to be a psychiatrist. read more
